Opeth - The Night and the Silent Water - live in Malmö, February 18th 2009 (UNRELEASED)

Let's face it - no performance of TNATSW will probably ever beat the Roundhouse Tapes. But this one is a contender.
Taken from Opeth's 2009 show in Malmö (same as the Godhead's Lament performance I shared last year), this excellent soundboard recording shows the Watershed lineup at their best.
Lineage is unknown, but if I remember correctly, this was broadcast on Swedish Public Radio shortly after the performance. I remastered the broadcast using modern tools to tighten up EQ and hiss, and added the visuals you see here.
Enjoy - I highly recommend listening to this in one sitting.

Not to poop on Opeth's recent work (I absolutely do find things to love in all of their albums, and I never miss a show in my area), but maaaaan... It would be a very welcome miracle if they would return to this level of true-Opethian stylistic greatness on their 2024 album, or the one after that, or the one after...

I was blessed by seeing Opeth live two times during the tour that was immortalized in TRT, I saw them in Dec 2005 and in Dec 2006. Some of the best concerts I've ever been to. @@sushskull3005 Ah, got it. I mean, that 1992 performance was live - just in a rehearsal room. I have much better quality recordings from the next couple of years, but they never played Whispers in front of a crowd other than during a sound check in October 1995. One copy of a video exists of that performance, but I unfortunately don't have it. They never played Whispers again. As for BRI, that was played live for the first time in November 2022. It was never played since being adapted from Whispers in 1996.

It's a painting from 1645 called "A River near a Town, by Moonlight." Aert van der Neer was the artist. Van der Neer was one from the so-called "Dutch Golden Age," and while many other landscape artists of that era captured the accuracy of their environment, few could match the emotional weight of van der Neer.
