About a year ago, I stumbled across Opeth when "In Cauda Venenum" came out. It was beautiful. The melodic singing and the incredibly constructed riffs. So I decided to look up some of their other stuff up and I found this. Normally, I'm not big into death metal (in this case prog death) but I couldn't help myself. I was absolutely incredible. Blackwater Park has now become one of my favourite albums ever, without a doubt. Those who like death metal but don't like Opeth are just wrong.

The Leper Affinity. Best Opeth opening track ever, in my opinion. It sets such an amazing mood for the rest of the album and just screams Opeth to me. The riffs, the melodies, the raw/gritty side, the mournful/sad side, this one song has that all. Sure, The Moor, Ghost of Perdition, In Mist She Was Standing and Heir Apparent (kinda cheating here but bear with me) are all amazing openers (especially Ghost and Heir) but this song is just pure magical. And for this kind of song, in just 10 and a half minutes, it's the perfect length for what it needs to evoke. The riff at 3:14 is my absolute favorite Opeth riff EVER! It's very disturbed, it's super kick-ass, and it took me a long time to figure out how to actually play. The soft part in the middle is very nice, not my favorite by any means but beautiful nonetheless. And Mikael's singing is extremely soothing. OH YEAH! I forgot about the vocals. Mikael Akerfeldt's growls were definitely in their peak in this era, he was a machine not to be reckoned with. It's definitely low, but not quite guttural, so it still sounds extremely badass (No offense to guttural, I'm just not a big fan). The production is super clean and every instrument sounds very nice. Martin Lopez's drums are really juicy in this mix and i love how Mendez's bass isn't just super buried like other albums. The guitars also sound fantastic, it's just an awesome tone that they have. It's a bit harsh, but it's an Opeth mix, so it kind of has to be a bit harsh. Steven Wilson is one of my all time favorite producers, so the fact that he was on board with this album and Deliverance/Damnation (two other fantastic albums) is a godsend. And speaking of Steven Wilson, THAT. OUTRO. The rest of the song is already amazing, but having this piano play at the end of this song with the signature Opeth key changes and melodies was definitely one of the smartest moves the band has ever made. Wilson is definitely a great piano player, he's not technically proficient or gifted, but he just sits back and lets the thing talk. And those final chords that play until the song ends takes me to another dimension. Overall, an absolute masterpiece of a track and one of my favorite Opeth songs ever. Blackwater Park is one of my favorite albums ever. Opeth is one of my favorite bands ever. And remember, this is just track one.

How can a song be THIS good!? I really praise "The Leper Affinity", as well as the entire _Blackwater Park_ (2001) album, for the beautiful riffs, nice progressions, remarkable breakdowns, basslines and powerful lyrics/vocals. It must be acknowledged how much complexity and devotion Opeth dedicated to their projects. This entire song is a masterpiece and my most favorite part of it is the section from 7:51 to 8:53. The drum breakdown at 8:00; the amazing riff that goes from 8:02 to 8:18 and the gorgeous ending riff beginning at 8:19 are an explosion of massively good emotions, to me.

The blackwater park bass track has a slap bass section. But Mendez is just fantastic. Able to do R&B and funk-adjacent stuff in the middle of everything and it judge feels right for their music, it never sticks out or feels like it doesn't fit. But I think that's also a testament to Mikael because he has always been a fan of jazz music and so it works out gracefully in all eras of Opeth that way, but especially recent Opeth.

This song is so complete. First time I listened to this album I was kind of surprised at the second track. I think it’s one of, if not their best releases

Interesting connection to a not very well known band. With the exception of APC, most of Maynard's side bands when he's not with Tool are super underground.

KZbin algorithm has been recommending quite a bit of Opeth lately and that is a good thing. Wasn't familiar with their stuff for a long time apart from an edited version of The Grand Conjuration that was on a cd that came with Metal Hammer magazine in 2005. Then the daily Doug youtube channel started reviewing a bit of their stuff. Now I'm really starting to get into them a bit.

Came here to see this basically. Ha. And it is one of the best. I've always wanted to know if Steven Wilson ever did anything like it again, and I do not have an answer. But there are other excellent modern piano artists...Hauschka is among them.

Goddamn, the riffs and the overall arrangement. So glad I decided to delve into Opeth. Also good timing since I am starting to get the taste for growling down. Also, nice growls, but that dude can also sing very well. Dude has a great voice.
