This is a personal gripe because I loved the book as a child, so I am very disappointed that people say it should have been made 10 years ago I think they could have done so much with it but instead, Netflix is trying to emulate bad 2010s dystopia instead of exploring the themes. BTW it's important to note the Uglies are not ugly and The pretties are not what we would consider pretty. The pretties give uncanny valley energy as they don't look remotely like humans and also they're all white because there was an ethnic cleansing and I mean Porcelein white. Anything darker than olive is considered ugly. Also just so people know Pretties work. For their whole life and they only party for a very short time. Thays why the surgery matters because they mindlessly serve the governnent. I just see so many people say they would want to live in the Uglies and it frustrates me.

i didn’t watch the movie bec i found the books to be a bit juvenile for my taste. i read them as an adult so duh i guess. i ended up dnfing the second book. personally i don’t think there was much commentary on beauty that will uphold in todays youtube commentary world. everything has been said on here about plastic surgery and it’s affects so it’s a bit dated as you said.

i loved the books when I was like 11 or 12! I haven't read them since then and they're probably not literary masterpieces but I still think there were some interesting ideas explored in there, especially for the time they were written in. Ofc the messaging about toxic beauty standards and the problems with cosmetic surgeries was anything but subtle but I think that's fine for media geared towards teens. The way Tally''s character changed throughout these books was honestly really interesting to read and as far as I remember she was quite the complex and ambivalent character towards the end of the series. Her was honestly character quite tragic - she goes through a lot of trauma throughout the series and it's quite clear that she loses parts of herself in the process. I remember feeling loss and grief for the person she used to be towards the end. And honestly looking back now that feels pretty accurate to the experience of growing up and going through shit - and it changing you in ways that cannot be undone. Idk, maybe I would really dislike the books if I read them now but they will always have a special place in my heart because of what they meant to me when I was younger.

I love the books and have read the series multiple times, but no the books are not that much better than the movie 😭😂 I did enjoy the movie i thought it was pretty accurate to the book but i get why people thought it was a mess! Anyways if they dont make the other 2 movies i will riot in the streets, especially after netflix did multiple kissing booth movies and freaking tall girl 2!!!!

Ugly and Pretty is a stupid concept to base your movie on because it's subjective, Joey King without makeup is still pretty. It does not make sense when she belongs in the ugly side when she is not, the visual does not match up lol and like mentioned in the video her friend who joined the pretty side didn't look that much prettier (not to me at least, he looks like any other tacky influencer out there). The whole concept is disoriented and shallow (obviously), makes you wonder Hollywood is living in a complete disconnect from the rest of the world thinking that being pretty is superior and deserve a whole movie surrounding that
