Absolutely brilliant! Another Christopher Nolan picture that is both visually stunning, and deeply intellectually stimulating… and again Kip Thorne has a hand in it! That final scene, however, is particularly poignant today. The cold war never ended, even after the Soviet Union fell. We are fast to take the slightest insult so personally that we destroy each other over it. Politicians wield such power that they can systematically eliminate opposition with impunity unless common people keep them in check. Prometheus gave man fire. Prometheus was tortured for his actions. Man inevitably burns himself.

It's Nolan's magnum opus. Everything this review said on this being a cross between science, politics, philosophy, history, and more. It's 3 hours, yes, but it felt like only 2 hours. I've been a long time Nolan fan, but even if anyone out there reading this is NOT a Nolan fan, if you only see one of his films in your life (hard as that is for me to imagine) please let it be this one. Not only is it my favorite Nolan film already. It's up there with Synecdoche New York, Requiem for a Dream & American History X in terms of my overall favorite films, and it's DEFINITELY the best biopic I've ever seen. I'm STILL thinking about the ending.

Small correction: Actually Oppenheimer wasn't relating to Krishna / Vishnu In the line, instead he related to the prince, read below to understand his philosophy The Bhagwat Geeta is basically the Prince Arjun, not wanting to fight cause his opponents were his own family members (brothers teachers etc) and didn't wanna be the one to kill them and commit a sin, Krishna being God himself says explains him about the system of life and it's mechanics and tells Arjun to fight not cause of Anger, hatred, property, power etc, But to fight just cause at this moment as a warrior his sole duty is to fight, have no attachment to the outcome , then to show that his words are what's truth he shows his 10th dimensional form Similarly Oppenheimer saw Himself in place of Arjun not wanting to be the cause for creation of mass destruction and so much death, he read the geeta to come to realization that he mustn't do it cause he wants or doesnt want to. But because it is his duty as a nuclear physicist for overall good He remembered the line cause As the Geeta Describes Vishnu's Multiarmed form, it was as if billions upon billions of Suns had rise on the battlefield Similar to what Oppenheimer felt by seeing the atomic bomb

In case of Oppenheimer, after creating the bomb he stood against the creation of the hydrogen bomb and the use of nuclear weapons as his influence grew while he publicly celebrated and was proud after the Hiroshima Nagasaki bombing. Which is actually self contradictory. He was complicated and problematic as a person. The film is good, but I think showing Oppenheimer as a victim was not right. He was smart enough to know that he won’t have any control over the use of the bomb while creating it. He knew the weapon could stop wars but also put lives of innocent civilians at risk. We don’t know what his actual motivations were, the movie would’ve been much better with a neutral perspective of the whole situation and not establishing someone as problematic as Oppenheimer as the victim and vilifying the system.

3:16 Also, relatively speaking, the size of the bomb from the Trinity Test is BITE SIZED compared to a lot of the bombs you're probably used to seeing or expected in more recent film footage or movies. It was never going to look all that impressive. You're probably used or expecting to seeing the size of the more devastating, megaton H-bomb style explosions from the 50s and 60s---what Edward Teller was discussing heavily in the film. I grew up in Whittier, California which is a small Quaker town of note because President Nixon went to law school there. But, there was a little known secret. Whittier was one of, if not THE city where the science team settled after the war. I had an opportunity to meet one of them. It was purely by accident. He was an exchange student sponsor. He happened to be the sponsor of my friend from Europe. While waiting for my friend to get ready to go out, I was waiting in the library of the house. I noticed a picture from Trinity and asked why that picture would be in his library. He told me his story. His explanation was really quite simple. They were so seduced by the complexity of the problem, The science, The physics that they were so focused on the question CAN it be done that they never stopped for even a moment of SHOULD it be done… until it was too late. He recalled the horror/excitement of that moment when it first worked and the realization of what they had unleashed. I don’t know if they cover this part of history but he admitted to several suicides that night after everything was finished. I’m looking forward to seeing this movie. Given everything that is going on here at home and abroad, I think we really should pause and understand what modern war really looks like and stop trying to glorify it for personal gain.

I just saw it earlier today and it was impactful on so many levels. I feel like it truly captured the struggle he went through. His betrayal to himself was the worst of all and you could feel it. My only true gripe with the film is the scene where Jean makes him read the "now I am become death" line. There were definitely some creative liberties taken there and it kinda cheapened the power and gravity of it and why it stuck with him.

OMG me too! I dindnt expect this from a Nolan movie unless ofc it actually happened which I doubt so. It was in such a bad taste. I thought that we would get a re-enactment of that speech where Oppenheimer first quoted it or maybe the first time he read the verse etc and got reminded about his creation but in any case they just cheapened it by bringing it again and again and with the sex scene it just, its just juvenile! Not to mention, it must be offending to people who are actually Hindus and they live by the book. It made sense during the detonation though!

To me, it wasnt about the detonation or that abrupt chain reaction which supposedly in a short time destroys everything but rather it was radiation poisoning, the aftermath. The emotions itself, the guilt is not a build up that errupts but rather constant harrowing shadow that keeps getting worse. It is that constant drowning situation. At least that to me was the point and the way the chronology was in the movie, instead of giving you the good happy days, the bomb and the aftermath, it 's aftermath from the moment movie started. It doesn't really have you a good moment without those imagery or flashbacks such as those feet stampings or chain reaction even most serene of moments!

Nolan himself said “I knew that I had two timelines that we were running in the film -- One is in color, and that’s Oppenheimer’s SUBJECTIVE experience. That’s the bulk of the film. Then the other is a black and white timeline. It’s a more OBJECTIVE view of his story from a different character’s point of view." So they are both correct. Plus, subjective doesn't mean it wasn't real. It just means it's not provable fact.

I found one of the themes to be paradoxes. Just as light is paradoxically both a wave and a particle, so are the choices of people sometimes paradoxically good and bad. Oppenheimer's choices seemed to, at some points, be paradoxical to each other. He was complicated, just as we are complicated, and so is everyone else we judge.

He took on the project because as much as he was opposed to war and the senseless killing it brings, he had experience with the nazis. And as he says in the movie about not knowing if we the United States can be trusted with nukes, but he knew the nazis could not. Had Hitler gotten the bomb he would have turned our world into a living version of hell. I served and fought in Afghanistan and Iraq, and once it became clear that the Bush administration had lied to the world in order to invade a country whose leader was admittedly a despot, we essentially did the exact same thing we are denouncing Russia for right now. And if pushed Russia does not employ a no first strike policy, and it's absolutely possible that if pushed past some point Putin would use nuclear weapons. If that happens the modern world as we know it ends in the best case, in the worst case ours and most other species will be wiped out. Our world would survive and repopulate but humanity would be a footnote

I hope we come up with a better solution to that challenge than MAD.

I just watched it. My only critique was the pacing was at light speed and transitions were jarring. You never were given the chance to really digest the scene you saw previously. And the 3rd act was long in the tooth and hard to follow if you’re catching up on ww2 history and the behind the scenes politics and drama that where going on. To me this was a movie for the ww2 history buff and not your average movie watcher. I think I’ll have to watch this another 2 times to final understand all that was going on.

When they detonated the test bomb, the theatre went dead silent, and when the boom hit after he said “I am death, the destroyer of worlds” the entire theatre jumped out of their seats as they got such a big fright lol

Many Americans do not understand the terrible sacrifice our WWII soldiers made so we could be here. The invasion of Japan without the bomb was all but certain and would have cost us a million + soldiers. The bomb was by far the lesser of the two evils. For anyone out there that’s a Jew hater ( and I’m Christian ) they are truly ignorant not to comprehend it was a Jew ( Oppenheimer and his colleagues ) that ended up saving so many of our soldiers and beat the Nazis in the race to develop the bomb. The truth IS the truth.

It’s a subject that is dealt with often in sci fi, anime. In Naruto, Pains objective was to cause a tragedy so horrific with the tailed beasts that Humanity would have no choice but to unite and bring about periods of peace. In Gundam Wing, Zechs conclusion was to cause a tragedy on Earth and unite Humanity in Total Pacificsm. Ofcourse he would learn that was a flawed philosophy and that for peace to finally happen each person must be willing to stand up and fight for it.( hmmmmm not a bad idea) In Star Trek, The Eugenics Wars, Then WW3 push humanity to the brink but with a desire to unite. Then First Contact with an Alien civilization that saw that we had discovered how to Travel faster than Light United Humanity. War, disease, poverty went away.

what i learned from this movie is that, i saw it more from spiritual aspect. all of thoughts and imagination will become reality (be it good or worst possible thing) it might take eternity but it will become true, until we have no thought we are empty and become whole with everyone

The movie was good but I was disappointed that Nolan didn’t show the audience the actual Hiroshima/Nagasaki nuclear attack or the aftermath of it. This to me is something that is very dark, but important for the audience to see the actual history.

Exactly. That moment itself was more than enough to project how Oppenheimer had realised the monster that he had unleashed.

@@ayonavoghosh415 I can agree with you on that. The audience only saw a glimpse of what it was. However seeing a small scene of it would’ve at least been more. Than the words mentioning it.

Bad as it is the Bomb saved more lives than it ended. I’ve been to the museums, I’ve been to the ground zero at Nagasaki, I’ve seen on full display the horrific destruction and power of these weapons. I came away knowing to my core that it is and should always be the final resort. Given my study on the invasion plan for the mainland Japanese Archipelago and knowing what I know about Imperial Japan from my studies I understand why friendly casualty figures were at least 7 figures long, why it was estimated that Japan would be destroyed as a country and why the civilian casualties would be hitherto unseen in all of history. The original creator of the Gattling Gun sought to create a weapon so terrible it would end wars, he was on the right track in terms of concept but the scale was wrong. It must really speak something of humanity that the only weapon to truly give us pause is one that creates apocalyptic levels of pain, suffering, death and destruction.

I thought the color scenes were from Oppenheimer’s perspective and the black and white scenes were from Strauss’ perspective. I didn’t read them as subjective vs. objective. Did I miss something in the film that clarifies that?
