Oprah talks to trauma therapist, minister, and author Dr. Anita Phillips about her New York Times bestselling new book, The Garden Within: Where the War with Your Emotions Ends and Your Most Powerful Life Begins. Dr. Anita explains how embracing our emotions rather than suppressing them is the key to living our most powerful life. Blending faith, the latest discoveries in neurobiology, and her own research, Dr. Anita shows us how to reach a state of emotional well-being. She describes this as our internal garden, our heart, that needs cultivating and that starts by letting ourselves be present in our feelings before rushing to understand or resolve.

Not nurtured it’s taking time and through therapy am finding nurturing self and healing. I Am NOT crazy as labeled by family. I believe God has another report. I am His workmanship. I have a garden within, God will give the increase ❤Dr Anita. Met her at the Potter’s House. Have the book too. Thank you two!!😢❤❤Safety❤Cultivating, processing

At 2a.m., too awake from physical misery; chronically ill, just trying to work thru it, as I have for years...and THIS randomly shows up in my feed. Thanks so much, Oprah and Dr Phillips for this wonderful approach to these deep subjects with the infusion of the Lord. I'll be purchasing this book within a couple days. I don't buy many books anymore; shame. What wisdom, light and hope the wonderful doctor imparts. Looking so forward to all of this soul search...I've been trying to add to my legacy for over fifty years, since I was a kid. Thank you both, ladies, for making an awful night enlightening. Blessings to you both. Peace and love. 🎉

I find that feeling feelings until they release brings me joy. In the past I suffered from depression and found mantra meditation helped me. I would write down my negative thoughts and come up with a positive mantra that was the opposite of my negative thoughts. I would focus my mind on my breath and repeating my positive mantra and any time my mind wandered bring my focus back to my breath and my mantra. I did this 45 minutes a day 5 days a week for a year in a half changing my mantra weekly. After a few weeks of doing this I was feeling much happier and calmer and after a year and a half I had a lot more positive thoughts about myself.

Yes! As the oldest, I have always had issue with how the non-prodigal son has been portrayed in the churches I have attended. I never felt he was being selfish. Hearing Dr. Anita present a different perspective helped me feel validated and seen. Allowing these tears to flow is so freeing...😢❤🌷

The prodigal son story… tears because I’ve finally heard someone understand the oldest child … at one point I thought all I was good for was work while others could be their complete selves make the worst mistakes and be loved unconditionally….. be happy for them but never really know if the same love would be extended for you

Great interview and greatly needed. I love how Dr. Phillips talked about being vulnerable. We are so apt to push those feelings back. I think this is why so many people are hurting because they have stored up pain that needs to be released. I remember when my mom died, I would do my normal stuff, grocery shopping, and tears would be flowing. It made so many people uncomfortable. They would say oh my can we help, are you okay? I would say no, I'm not okay, but I will be. I just needed to not stuff it, or stay at home because I might cry. It is so freeing when you can cry when you need to because, for me, it hurts my body when I need to cry and I don't. Thank you, Oprah, for having Dr. Phillips on your Podcast.

I have never clicked on a KZbin video so fast! I'd been waiting on my physical copy for months here in England and now reading it, seeing this video has validated the experience of the book. I could have listened for hours to you two talking about this.❤This fed my soul.

The connection you make of the body, its function, the heart as a base of a living tree, and so much more meat is amazing to me. How you've shown the connection of God's word with nature springing up in man. It's just so beautiful. I'm sitting here watching the program on TV and had to share about this emotion you have stirred up with your knowledge...amazing , just amazing. God is so good. He's taught you well, Dr. Anita Phillips..

Mygooood I have bingewatching every preaching and messages from Dr. Anita.. and God really surprised me with all this revelations. I have never been validated, called out and seen more than I experienced as I was watching all these vids.. I'm literally sobbing silently starting last night. Thank you God for using this lady to help me understand my traumas spiritually and emotionally😢

I listened twice to this program and was in tears, for it hit deep for me. I was also invisible and attacked many terrible adversities to the trauma that was controlling my life. I thank you both and will keep on trying to heal myself.
