@@pmj_studio4065 150km/h is safer, easier (has cruise control, mesh better with the traffic), better for the environment (even renewable energy has non-zero impact, and then there is tire wear, etc), and just a tiny bit slower (3-5km/h slower than 190km/h). 150kmh/ to 130km/h is yet another 5km/h slower, and 130km/h to 110km/h is 10km/h slower.

Paweł Buczyński most of the time there’s much traffic and 190 doesn’t make much sense because you will have to brake really soon. 150 is really a nice cruising speed in Germany. But yes if you’re driving when it’s completely free like at night then it’s really hard not to drive faster than 150. your foot just gets really heavy if the road is free.

Surprising numbers. I usually stick to 150km/h because it gives me the range/driving time until I want a break. I.e. I use more of a psychological/convenience approach to how fast I drive (I find it also a lot less stressful than driving at 190km/h because you more easily mesh with the flow of the traffic.). But for those who are in an absolute rush it's good to know that hammering it to 190 works well.

It's not that simple. For 50 kW charging, 130 km/h is optimal. But if you calculate average power for that speed, it's: 130 km/h * 237 Wh/km = 30.8 kW And for 120 kW and 200 kW charging vs 190 km/h: 190 km/h * 393 Wh/km = 74.6 kW

Gamification of driving! Tesla should take that one step further. Giving feedback on how efficient you've driven a route compared to others in the same type of car that day. Or the same AI that can almost self drive could also be used in passive mode just to give drivers plus and minus points and lessons when it thinks the driver makes good and bad decisions. @@Tore_Lund Electricity delivered at SuperChargers comes from renewable sources. The electricity I pour into my EV at home comes partly from the panels on my roof and the rest is certified renewable. I already paid an unknown amount up front for the SuperCharger electricity (new Tesla-owners pay as they go), I paid for my solar panels and I pay the going rate (a little more than for an unknown mix I could also have chosen) for the renewable electricity I buy. If other people use dirty electricity, how can that be my fault and why should I pay extra for that too? If you Germans are so well-educated, why did you let yourselves be fooled into closing your great nuclear power plants because of an incident at a poorly designed plant caused by a natural catastrophe at the other side of the Planet, a catastrophe of a kind which never did and probably newer can happen in Germany? Now you are burning coal and feeling bad about it. Besides, German manufacturers are ramping up their EV lines as fast as they can (maybe even a little faster than they can) to catch up with Tesla. Are you saying that their engineers are not well educated?

Hi Bjørn, your consumption seems very high, even higher than Model S and it's getting close to the consumption with Tesla S in winter. A German rental company (Nextmove) tested Model 3 LR (non-performance) with 229Wh/km at 150km/h and 164Wh/km at 120km/h. And Model S is also in the range of 250Wh/km summer to 300Wh/km in winter at 150km/h. And especially your 110km/h consumption seems very high and is nowhere near the from Tesla assumed average consumption of 152Wh/km for Model 3. Of course the performance edition with dual motor will add a little but I am wondering if your rim/tire combination costs about 15% to 20% efficiency which would be insanely high. It's a pity you sold your original rims and tires before testing them for noise and efficiency. But do you have any explanation why already your 110km/h consumption is so high?
@bjornnyland
@bjornnyland 5 жыл бұрын
Non-performance has 18" with wheel caps. I have 19" wheels with Zax rims. And it was cold-ish during my tests. If Nextmove had warmer temperatures, then that gives lower consumption. And how did they test it? Did they do an exact A-B-A testing like me? If they only tested in one direction then that has lots of errors (elevation, wind). And it should be done on a road with low traffic.
@stefanwagener
@stefanwagener 5 жыл бұрын
@@marcusbiller867 Yes, it looks like the bigger wheels are so much more inefficient but 20 or 25% doesn't match anywhere near what Tesla is advertising as range for non-performance vs. perfornance. At 110km/h it should be possible to come close to the advertised EPA range (not WLTP range) of 310miles/500km but with 205Wh/km it is more like only 360km of range.
@stefanwagener
@stefanwagener 5 жыл бұрын
@@bjornnyland Not too scientific but I would say thoroughly and going in a circle. Also recently they did a comparison of several EVs (Model 3, S, X, Kona, e-tron) at 130km/h (averaging 115) and at 150km/h (averaging 130) and going back and forth and for Model 3 needed 185 and 209Wh/km. So 209Wh/km for 130km/h average speed with top speed of 150km/h is what you needed for 110km/h. Doesn't it seem a little bit high for you also when you compare it with your old days in Tesla S? Getting only around 360km of range when going at a slow 110km/h is somewhat disappointing to me.
@stefanwagener
@stefanwagener 5 жыл бұрын
@@marcusbiller867 Exactly, 5-7% make sense or up to 10% compared to LR RWD 18", but not 20 to 25% difference. According to that table the consumption of M3 P 20" would be 158Wh/km at 105km/h and 172Wh/km at 113km/h. That is way below the 205Wh/km at 110km/h measured by Bjorn. So his slightly colder temperature and his 19" wheels are around 25% (205 vs. ~165Wh/km) worse than the value given in that table of a model with 20". That is a huge difference.

Great Stuff, Børn, just one caveat, the figures are calculations for minimal amount of time but don't take into account the resulting possible range. For example, assuming 400Wh/km with a 75kWh M3 LR pack, assuming 70kWh usable, a 10-60% boost, i.e. 50% capacity addition means 35kWh of added energy. 35kWh of energy used up at 400Wh/km gives you a "range" of under 100km! So you'd need to have a Supercharger every 100km or less which is still a big ask for many cross-country routes :) And a 100km range at 190km/h means a stop every 30-35 minutes. So once you take into account the time to slow down, find way to Supercharger, stop, plug, unplug, get going back up to speed, it pretty much wipes out any benefits of the faster speed in my opinion. But loving the maths nonetheless :D

Model 3 Long range has 74.5 kWh nominal capacity, not 70 kWh. And in my spreadsheet I also take in account charging stops (+5 minutes extra). In this video I left out all the complicated calculations because it seems like many viewers become more confused. But take a look here of how the numbers are: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYHRln6JeMeGfZI Yes, it might be hard to understand why it pays off to drive at 190 km/h. But that's the way to go if you want to arrive faster.

@Noi5ee
@Noi5ee 5 жыл бұрын
In terms of average speed yes. What the chart basically means that if you charge at 120kw to 200kw, you can drive up to 190kmh before the increase in charging time reduces your overall travel speed. So basically for everyone outside Germany it means you just drive as fast as you can get away with, provided you have the necessary chargers en-route.
@PaulBroere
@PaulBroere 4 жыл бұрын
I love how serious you take you research! I wonder if the results of the test you did would also be true (optimal cruising speed 150kmh, charging 10-60%) if you would travel great distances where there's not always a supercharging at the excact right moment. I mean: of you drive fast (150) and only charge 10-60%, you have a very short range. The fast driving and charging make sure that you are fast, BUT, what if on your long journey, you have several occasions where there's no supercharger exactly at 10%.. you have to slow down, maybe take a detour?

You can see he does show how different amounts of charging impacts overall average speed with different travel speed. The distance between chargers is different for every route and every leg of the route. So you just gonna have to consider that individually. There is no exhaust coming out of an EV. Electricity stored in a battery also doesn't smell. Lithium is not in a battery as an element but in the form of a salt (or ions) and you can't normally get to it (unlike fumes from a tank or exhaust or at any gas station). EV owners just "enjoy the silence", lack of fumes, smooth drive, a full battery every day (if they like) with energy they can either produce themselves or get from a regional utility, which means support of regional business and jobs. Electricity can be produced using renewables such as solar, wind, et al. Not so with Diesel and gas. Personally I feel better if I don't have to inhale the exhausts of ICE engines. Really bad in cities, especially horrible at major crossings, worst for kids. When I used to drive a Diesel I didn't do it because I thought it was the best thing ever and I hated the smell, noise, and vibration back then already. I drove it because there was hardly any real alternative at the time. Now there are EVs suitable for many of us (not everyone, yet - or ever). I've made the switch in June of 2014, so five years ago and never regreted a second. People who are unsure or sceptical of EVs should at least test drive an EV or even a couple of them. That won me over back then. Your mileage may vary.
