Since the LR uses the LG 79kWh pack with a worse charging curve than this "old" Q1 Panasonic Performance, I think it will have a hard time beating it. If a comparison is made, then @bjørnnyland should make sure it has the new 3D7 rear motor for best efficiency.

I’m curious about how these batteries will hold up once they have 150K/175K/200K miles on them? From what I’ve read charging with level 3 chargers at 250 KW too often could degrade the battery and therefore its efficiency over time vs let’s say putting a 150K/175K/200K miles on a Toyota Camry. I still drive fossil fueled cars and I have the mindset of range anxiety. I couldn’t imagine driving an EV to 5% or 2%. In order for me to consider getting a Tesla or another EV I would need to see a major overhaul and expansion of charging networks here where I live in the USA and improved energy density for batteries that go in EVs. 300/350 miles is not enough range YET for me to consider owning an Tesla or another EV. Everyone talks down on fossil fueled cars but I wonder what percentage of all EV chargers worldwide are actually powered by clean and sustainable energy? I’m definitely looking forward to the future of EV technology and battery technology in regards to improving energy density. I hope one day we will actually see batteries that don’t degrade too much until 500K or a million miles.

Awesome Test!!! Please keep it up, I love how we can compare different EVs 1:1 BUT: Now that we/you are soooo close to the fossil (only 15 min apart), can we really compare it to the fossil? The Kia had 2 refueling stops + pee pee (- you deducted lunch). The Tesla had 4 stops each approx 15 min. For it to be really comparable to the fossil, with 4 charging stops, you should not be able to come closer than 30 min to the fossil, right? IMHO: Humans must eat and pee during 1000 km, so deducting the 25 min is already a present for the fossil and we can say that EVs are the same speed already, as ~1 h for breaks is simply necessary, when travelling in a safe and healthy way.

Which Tesla though? Like this is a ~500hp AWD monster cruising down the hwy in "sport mode" (full power available) and still producing impressive efficiency. An EV6 rwd putting in eco mode isn't really a comparison of apples.
@FreeMountainTom
@FreeMountainTom 2 жыл бұрын
Eco mode does not limit the power on the EV6. You just have a less sharp throttle respone which can help to save energy. It will also try to save a little energy by not running the AC all the time but in intervalls. For the 1k challenge it will not matter if you take AWD or RWD KIA EV6 when the wheels/tires are the same on the AWD. With steady driving the weight extra of the AWD does not effect consumption. Front motor is decoupled. This beeing said I would also like to see EV6 summer test 1000km challenge. Should be around 9hrs30min.

efficiency also comes from aerodynamics, clever management of heat (tightly integrated battery, stator, motor and cabin heat/cooling), sophisticated power control electronics and very good motors. Tesla has a lead in all of those areas over the OEMs too.

Björn thanks for the great video. Tesla is really ahead. But I have a short question: My wife and I become parents in Q1 2023 and we need a car in this year because the german government is likely to end the EV promotion by the end of this year. That’s about 10k€. It’s not sure but unfortunately it’s likely. So we ordered a Model 3 SR in March but it comes in Q1. Now we’re thinking to go for a Polestar 2 SR because it would come in this year (with full promotion). Besides these facts, what would your choose? Model 3 is the better EV, Polestar 2 is somewhat the „better legacy car“ in terms of optic and look and feel imho. Wish you a great Sunday and greetings from Germany.

But again from infrastructure point of view, they would want to ‘get rid’ of you asap. So that next car can use the charger. Yes maybe at that moment it’s not crowded, but as nobody can predict traffic and charging need, they still have to pump out at full speed. Best for you in this case to set it to 90% max, then if the car says 35 min remaining, put that as an alarm. Once it’s there, get the car out of the charging spot.

@@tomes3378 in reality, the majority of EV drivers can charge at home and starting with 100% every morning is part of the package. Also, charging at destination is often possible. One interesting metric would be how much time yearly is spent as overhead for charging / fueling. Then again, there would be so many factors and a broad distribution, with EVs being at the both tail ends. When going from my inland home to a seaside apartment, only 5-6 minutes in between are spent on charging (and to grab a coffee).

Not even close yet. Most diesel cars can easy do 1100-1200 km without refueling at highway speed. In Germany you can easy do +500 km in 3 hours, in night drives on A7 or A9. So EV’s has to able to do it around 7 hours, in Germany, to be on par.

Great review, but I think looking at the temperatures for say the EV6 or other superfast charging cars. It was much colder. So maybe a new test in these summer temps for EV6 or Ioniq 5. I know EV6 guys are getting super fast charging speeds now that it is summer and it did break a record in crossing the US. Appreciate the EV6 or Ioniq5 is nowhere near as efficient, but superfast charging could maybe make up some of this? 🤷🏻‍♂️then it would give a fairer comparison against Tesla for cars that had the 1000km in the winter months only.

@@sworksm552 i think if you check back the Model Y was at 13-21c. The EV6 was at 6-7c. The point is at lower temps the EV6 takes much longer to charge. However at higher temps it gets 230kw and can maintain that level for much longer than a Tesla. I am not saying it would beat it. But it has set records and in warm weather is bloody quick and to do a fair comparison it needs to be tested in similar weather. Warm weather for the EV6 makes a big difference as the Tesla is more efficient.

I thought earlier Bjorn did a video where he complained about the thermal throttling of the EV6 in the summer, where if he had the cabin AC on, it wasn't able to cool the battery sufficiently causing it to throttle charging... Similarly, when he got back on the highway, the battery was still 50 degrees C, causing the motors to thermal throttle to 60kW or something like that... I think there's a whole video he created on the EV6/Ioniq 5 charging issues...

@@TechSavvyOppa it wasn’t a Summer video and the temperatures were still quite cold. Unfortunately the car was not available last summer. There have been many updates to the software since and especially in relation to the heat pump. Plus I believe the next update due is preheating the battery before arriving at a destination charger very similar to what Polestar have done and Tesla has done for years. Many people have reporting fantastic charging speeds and it would be interesting now to see a similar temperature comparison. Especially considering the improvements a lot of manufacturers have made since the initial release of their cars.
