Slight correction - some users are seeing PBO2 available on B450 motherboards. Another update: It is available on some boards with AGESA 1.1.0.0, including my Crosshair VIII Impact. Just tested the Ryzen 5900X in my own system - it can do a negative offset of 25.

You went over the most important part of all of this in the video which is stability testing. The main issue that I found while trying out the curve optimiser is that even though you can test it each core individually or all cores at the same time with different stress testing programs this will can only guarantee stability during intensive workloads. Most of my crashes that I faced were while the PC was idling. I haven't found a consistent way of testing this aspect of the curve optimiser. I have checked reddit posts and different forums and I've seen people complaining about the same issue. The PC can be stable while running prime95 all night but it will crash while you just browse the web. I propose you do a followup video after you use the system for at least one week with the settings you showed and then report if the system was actually stable. Maybe even make a video that covers stability testing.

@SaltyMaud
@SaltyMaud 3 жыл бұрын
@@monkfishy6348 Well, it sounds pretty good to me. It's a pretty smart compromise, having a limited number of high performance cores allows, in theory, you to push more speed out of them within thermal and power limitations. Additional LP cores benefit efficiency in light use and you can think the additional threads they provide for thread hungry applications as a free bonus. Best of all worlds. No compromises on single thread performance, improved efficiency, additional threads without bloating the power envelope. It's not a novel idea, it's about time it was utilized in desktop CPUs. How it turns out in practice remains to be seen, but the way i see it, this has the potential to be the greatest paradigm shift since the introduction of multicore CPUs. For huge CPU farm applications and the people who legitimately have good use for the xeons and threadrippers, this may not be it. But for the majority of consumers this is very interesting indeed.

Absolutely spot on! This is a feature that is truly worthy of a "finally" :o But still, Curve Optimizer seems like a solution to a problem that shouldn't really exist. I got impatient trying to get a hold of a 5000 series and went for a good deal on a 3800XT, and I've been playing around trying to tame the ridiculous voltage it uses at default. PB does a good job of clocking up, but shoots itself in the foot with the voltage. Temperatures aren't an issue, as my loop is complete overkill, but it keeps sending CPU power into the red. PBO aactually gives worse performance, as, for some reason, it boosts 100MHz lower than default. Auto-overclocking is pointless for the same reasons, there's no point in raising the limits if it isn't hitting any of them. Then, I fell into the same trap as the 1V guy, "lets stick an ofset on and see what happens." I dialed in 250mV and it was looking good: immediately dropped 20W from CPU, clocks boosted better than ever. Then R23 finished and only gave 10k, instead of 12k... After a few more runs, I noticed the Core VID was higher than it should be, and HWiNFO64 was showing the "Effective Clock" as only about 3600MHz, even though the "Clock" was a good 4500/4600ish. Clearly the motherboard's idea of "Core Voltage" is different to AMD's. Dialing in a fixed frequency and voltage still seems like the only way to go for 3000 series. I've dialed in 4200MHz at 1.2V and it seems happy enough. Lots of tweaking still to be done, though.

I did this yesterday on my 5600x, Asus TUF x570 and was pretty amazed with the results, thanks for the guide. Before the tweak at stock cores would fluctuate between 3.7 and 4.6, and had some pretty high temps compared to what I was used to on my VERY old FX-8350. 50s idle and into the 80s just playing Overwatch on an h100i (my 8350 never went above 45, not that we can compare something so outdated, but I believe the FX-8350 did have a pretty high power draw, so I was surprised by this massive increase esp at idle, at only 65w on the 5600x). Anyway, I followed all of the steps discussed although I set the PBO limit to "Motherboard" rather than "Disabled" as directed in the video. Initially my -30 looked stable, but I got a number of blue screens when gaming and under load, so I dialed it back (er, up) to -28 and so far this has been a sweet spot with my particular chip and set up. I will report back after running in this set up for a while as I am planning on enjoying it and not tweaking anything further for some time. The result though has been amazing. The "base" frequency appears to have been bumped up to ~3.9 ghz, (The boost setting in BIOS is indeed set to +200 mhz) and the boost is now 4.8. It basically just sits at 4.8, one core at least is almost always at boost, with periodic dips down to 3.9, behavior I did not see under the previous settings where all cores would often sit at 3.7 under light load or idle, or perhaps due to temperature limits at load. The best thing; is that my temps are much lower. 38-45 idle depending on whether my A/C is on or not, and when gaming I have not seen over 71c. I would advise for anyone trying this on an Asus board, I played with only settings in the "Advanced" settings menu. There are also PBO settings in the "AI Tweaker" menu. I left all of the AI Tweaker menu settings to the default, which for me was "Auto". Now of course the 200mhz is not going to offer many daily use gains for people playing games. However, compared to old school overclocking where you got a small % bump and some higher temps, here I got much lower temps and more consistent, higher boosts. Those are real benefits, and you don't need to run a benchmarking tool or to be doing heavy rendering to see them. This curve undervolt really takes a great thing in the 5600x and makes it somehow even better, I'd advise anyone with basic ability to navigate the BIOS give it a shot if their system is set up to do so.

I could benchmark all the way from -30 curve all cores and an additional -0.1v as soon as I try playing games I get crashes all over, turns out one of my cores needed OVERVOLTING to be stable so no matter how much messing I did with undervolting the chip my cores weren't stable, even at auto... so the first thing you do before messing with an undervolt is sort your curve out first

Just to note on chips with arbitrarily locked boost clocks like say the 5700x you can gain 200-300 mhz single core performance as well as all core. Be warned though, your system might run fine during load but -30 offset can cause your system to crash at idle because of how this all works. So, you'll be running benchmarks and everything will seem fine but your computer will be crashing or acting real strange during lighter tasks. Might require some tinkering to find the perfect offset. Then again some people are lucky can just go -30 and all is fine.

Tried Blend testing and the clocks stay at full speed 4650Mhz for the whole time at 1.212V and temps around 65C with an aftermarket cooler. After the boost ends, the voltage falls even further to 1.1 - 1.150 and clocks stay constantly at 4450Mhz with temperatures below 60C. I'm extremely happy. Didn't lose a single drop of performance, but the voltage spiking high up to the sky is over. My friend did the same, but he could "only" manage to get it to -27. Yes, you're essentially finding the optimal voltage for your CPU that the factory/manufacturer didn't have the time to do, which you can better observe on the cheaper 6-core opposed to the already highly binned 16-core model.

You should have done a test for 5800x. that cpu is the worst at stock temps due to the ppt being set to 142W out of the box and not 105W as stated on the product page.
@devilsoffspring5519
@devilsoffspring5519 8 ай бұрын
PPT is the physical design power of the AM4 socket though, not the TDP of the chip itself. A CPU can run with higher power absorption than the TDP for a short while. I just recently put together a 5800X system (maybe I should have gone for 7600X!) and it really isn't that hard to keep temps down. A 50 dollar Thermalright cooler and undervolting (Negative 25 on the Curve Optimizer) keeps it well away from the thermal throttle limit (90C) even on a 130+ watt Prime95 test load.

Motherboard limits to disabled why? This I just the UV what's about the offset. You can easily get the 5600 boosting to 5ghz+. Just by add this setting to what u already have. Add a +350 offset in the Advanced CPU configuration and also set it in the AMD CBS menu (@+200 as that's what AMD officially allow in that menu). That why your curve optimiser works a treat.

Exactly this. This video just scratches the surface. There's much more to tweak to unlock the full potential. Enabling PBO is key to this (but it means you have to put in the work - the PC will now crash with a simple -30 undervolt on most CPU's). I'm running a 5600X with PBO, +400Mhz, -12/-17 on best cores and -22 on the rest. Runs around 4700Mhz all core in CB20 with voltages around 1.25v for a score around 4700. Single core it achieves up to 5050Mhz with scores around 640 in CB20 (which is not that special - my best cores aren't that great).

can confirm, this works I used curve optimiser value of 30 for 5800x. Temps were 5-7C lower for r20 with score of 6107 points. stock score was somewhere around 5820 all core boost of 4.65ghz improvement of 125-150mhz. single core was the same at 4.85ghz but much more stable. At stock it would drop down to as low as 4.7ghz. room temp 18c. I did optimize my fan curves for quietness when I updated the bios maybe the CPU would had boosted even higher if i kept the fans as same as when I did the testing at stock voltages. Im using msi x570 gaming plus and 16gb crucial 3600mhz micron E-die stock AMP profile 16-18-18-38-58. Edit: with fans at max r20 score was slightly higher at 6130 points but temps were 12-14c lower compared to stock.

Completely forgot to update this a year ago. You need to set "Max CPU Boost Clock override" to Positive and set the off set to +200mhz or whatever your CPU can handle. This will let you hit 5050 mhz on single core and all cores will boost higher up to 200mhz higher as long as you can stay under 80c.

Some benchmark programs showed the best scores which was great BUT when using Cinebench and 3DMark, the PC would reboot itself midway through each of those benches. Bummer! I then switched back to PBO auto, hehe and all is fine now. I guess playing with the curve optimizer setting to lower than 30 would help but IDK.
