They've been building up to this moment really well! In this series, Sparky has not been the best father, and his impulsiveness and rage actually resulted in bis son being hit and paralyzed by a stray shot either from his men's or from his own rifle. Optimus saved his son more than once, and Sparky finally learned from his mistake and redeemed himself by becoming one with the Matrix/Optimus' spark.

You have to remember that this is an Optimus who is essentially running on fumes. Both him and the matrix are severely depleted after going through countless battles back-to-back, refusing to be repaired time and again to give other autobot the chance to be healed instead, etc. Right now, this story is showing that even with next to nothing left in the tank, Optimus is still a beast. In other words, the authors are by no means underscaling Optimus or the matrix, they're just portraying a low point. Given how they've written Optimus thus far, I'm sure that he'll be on absolute demon timing when we do see him at full power in this continuity.

That's a mind screw... but a powerful one that feels entirely in character. And while I question the idea that powering a hospital would drain the matrix, it goes to show that he recognizes humans as equals and protecting them as his duty. The Matrix is a sacred relic of ages lost, and he used it to save them by keeping the building online. This kind of humility and generosity despite the gravity of his title as PRIME reminds me of when he went to bargain with Unicron in TFP. He beseeched his people's devil to have mercy on humanity.
