Theoretically it would sound exactly the same! With 4-1, what you are hearing is the odd firing of each bank, however crossplanes are even firing when looking at all 8 cylinders. Flat planes are even firing per bank as well.

@trackdayclassics
@trackdayclassics Жыл бұрын
I’m not the expert, but to answer the question: the purpose of the sequential 8 into 1 is line the pulses up in line and close together to pull the next one in behind it. This also requires equal length primaries, right? However, look into the 180 set ups of the GT40s in the sixties; close to your idea, but slightly more complicated. Check the 180 out. Cheers!

Pretty cool! I've got a 70 Chevelle I wanna build pro touring with a maybe 9 degree, BBC and 8-1 setup. Think I may split it again into boom tubes like cup cars had. Crazy amount of work. Probably looses some power but should sound really good. Also think I may use different lengths (to even degrees between firing within a given bank, draw it out and you'll see what I mean). But I'd probably take a trip to the engine dyno to test that theory on conventional headers first. Awesome build, haven't ever heard anything like it 👍

Thank you for the question Amy. Do you mean that if the heads were properly designed to do this, the exhausts would be where the intake manifold is, and the intake ports were on the outside of the engine? So just out of curiosity, what’s the disadvantage of the spider design? I’m just not quite understanding how big of a difference there is between the two. Plus the spider design would save weight and make installation much easier.
@trackdayclassics
@trackdayclassics Жыл бұрын
Great question. I’m not an engineer or exhaust fabricator. So the following is based on what the experts told me and and my limited research. The spider design does not allow the exhaust pulses to line up evenly. The gaps between each pulse means the scavenging is also uneven. Think of kids holding hands in a line and running along. If the chain is broken, then people get left behind and no one is pulling them along. When the primaries are in firing order, there are no breaks in the chain so the scavenging is much much better. I can see the allure of the spider design because it is easier to build and looks nice and symmetrical. It seems most guys on KZbin try to build them this way, and they may think this works better than typical headers. But the reality is that the spider design is not much better in scavenging than most tuned headers. I’ll admit it still sounds great, but it is not as efficient as a sequential system. It also has a lot to do with the ability of the engine to make big horsepower. In an average engine, they probably wouldn’t make a noticeable difference. I can tell you that my car “ seems” to feel like it has broader useable power, especially coming out of turns. I hope that helps? Cheers!
@county_bear9509
@county_bear9509 Жыл бұрын
@@trackdayclassics thank you bro, it’s much appreciated. My goals are simply to optimize weight and make the car as easy to work on as possible, so spider headers are definitely one of the most effective options for me. Thank you for the video! Though I'm not an engineer, just an enthusiast, it's always fascinating to read/watch content such as this, and also answered some doubts I had regarding the principles behind the system! A few questions: 1- Even with all the shielding, could the heat in that area right above the transmission affect it? Like, increasing the transmission oil temperature and such... 2- Is it safe to assume that installing the collector in front of the engine would require less work and fabrication too? (Even if just a bit, since it wouldn't require a new firewall and everything, but probably relocating the radiator further up front perhaps, and a new structure in that area?) 3- Not asking the technical feasibility, but just theory...could such system be combined with 180-degree headers for an even more exotic-like sound? Once again, thank you for the video! Insta-subbed. 😁👍🏻
@trackdayclassics
@trackdayclassics Жыл бұрын
Thanks Rodrigo for the subscribe and the questions. I not an engineer, but I will try to answer. The transmission I’m using pretty much works the same as ever, so I don’t know how much effect there is. Many of the GT40s of the 60s and other rear engine race cars ran the exhaust right over the transaxle too. On many of the Ford and Mercury compacts of the era (Mustangs, Falcons, Cougar, Comet, etc) had very little room in front of the engine and that influenced my decision. I didn’t need a radio, AC, or heater for a track day car, so that space was available. Newer cars might be better candidates for the collector in front. Your last question is a real head scratcher. A true 180 usually has the center two cylinders crossing over to the opposite side (again, like the GT40). The 8 into 1 and 180 exhausts sound very similar to me, although I think the (sequential) 8 into 1 is a tad more efficient. I really don’t know how the two could be combined. Thanks for your questions Rodrigo! Cheers!

@@trackdayclassics Thank you for the answer! Yeah, I remember seeing that exhaust setting in the GT40's and always had these same doubts, but never could find any further information regarding this specific topic. I guess it really did not have any negative impact, or at least it was negligible, otherwise they probably would've tried to do something about it, applying some sort of heat shielding between the transmission and the piping...but to my (limited) knowledge, it's never been done. I also didn't know about that point of the 180-degree setup, regarding the center cylinders...always thought all of them crossed over to the opposite side! Well, in the end, I don't know which setup, 8-1 or 180, is the least complicated, but both surely sound great. And as difficult as they may be, they're both true works of art, just like the system you have in your car, along with all the changes required to fit everything properly. 👏‍ Thank you again, hope to see more videos in the future!! 😎🤜‍🤛‍😎

How would the performance of an 8 into 1 exhaust system work in a forced induction supercharged (Roots style) engine be expected to be? In the estimated graph of NA engines indicated increased performance in the early rpm range with an 8 into 1 VS conventional exhaust. Much like a supercharger especially Roots superchargers.

Great question Rifleman. I don’t personally think there would be much of an improvement by going to an 8 into 1 with forced induction. The 8 into 1 is the best way to scavenge exhaust pulses (IMO). Not sure that would apply with a blower. Thanks!

Sorry, just re read this. Would NOT improve a forced induction IMO.

Great question. The answer is probably not. The whole idea is to line up exhaust pulses in firing order. Otherwise you lose the sound and the scavenging benefits. Thanks for the question! Cheers!

Have you done any experiments with the surface-area of each individual pipe, to the surface-area of the collector, a ratio of sorts? Let's call it a "CIR" , as in "Collector over Individual Ratio" ...the collector I'm guessing is about 105mm in diameter....each individual pipe at about 45mm. Since this design obviously has more area for all eight pipes than the surface area in the collector., we will mathematically call it "collector divided by individuals" to get a number typically less than one....by my math, & my guesses on the size of things, this thing I just cooked up gets you a CIR of 0.68

No Ricardo, I’m afraid I do not have the expertise that you have (never got past Algebra 2 😝). I can tell you the primaries are 2” in diameter and about 34” long. I don’t have the numbers on the collector. Interesting thought…thanks for the comment! Cheers!

@AndieBlack13 Жыл бұрын
@@trackdayclassics Well, we have a surface area of the single circular Collector...and we have the surface area of each of the eight pipes combined. Some guy here on YT has done a little experimentation with the angle of the primaries as they turn to go to the collector. In your design at 0:57 , you can guess the angle is about at a Forty-five degree angle. Now this guy is happy with a Fifteen degree angle...but with all eight of your pipes, the size of a medium sized dinner plate before they all converge, a Fifteen degree angle would have the whole thing being about Twenty-eight inches long, or more! Just how long it is really depends on how big the collector is & how steeply the primaries turn to converge together. PS, the sound of your Mustang is just incredible!
@trackdayclassics
@trackdayclassics Жыл бұрын
@@AndieBlack13 Thanks! And you are correct about this collector. The first time I had one built, the collector ran under the passenger footboard and it likely had the 15 degree angle you mention. I still have that collector. When the new one showed up, I asked the builder why it was so short. He said it would help to make it fit. You seem to have a real grasp of this concept. Thanks again for the comments. Cheers!

I looked, but I couldn't find any others that really sing the same way, even if they have built with a merge collector. Maybe they aren't lining up the exhaust pulses like you did, or maybe there are other variables to consider as well. Did you know what you would get when you started fabrication? Or was it a bit of a surprise?@@trackdayclassics

Weld that collector should have been a pita! Amazing work tho. How much the fact the 8 pipes are routed into 1 affects the sound compared to a traditional 180 degree headers that normally ends in 2 pipes?
@trackdayclassics
@trackdayclassics Жыл бұрын
Thanks! However, the header was fabricated by someone else the exhaust builder uses. My work started from the clamp ring back. If you listen to a true 180 (like the 1960s rear engine GT 40) it has its own unique sound, and would more preferable on any race car that might need repairs at the race. The 180 exhaust would be hard to remove (with the center two pipes from each head crossing behind the engine to other collector)
@trackdayclassics
@trackdayclassics Жыл бұрын
The sound is all about tube diameter, combustion chamber, tube length, and exhaust tuning. With an 8 into 1 built correctly ( that is; with the primaries entering the collector in SEQUENTIAL firing order) it’s a sound that’s really different from off the shelf headers, x-pipes, etc. Thanks for the comment and for viewing the channel. Cheers!
