Great info, doc. Could you please provide your thoughts on my observations below? I know you are unable to recommend at this time due to lack of RCT on minoxidil, but could this case be a case of serious side effects? I started taking 2.5mg oral minoxidil after being on 1mg finasteride for over 3 years. Two weeks in, I experienced side effects. I noted a marked increase in resting heart rate that kept getting consistently higher average each day (from < 60 RHR to > 75 RHR over the course of two weeks) -- measured thru Apple Watch. I also felt chest tightness / compression, postural hypotension, and oddly long-distance blurred vision. One day randomly I had tears that fell from my eyes -- but no prior reason for tears -- not a lot but enough to link that with the blurred vision. Could be the "periorbital edema" you mentioned.. The chest "fullness" feeling was worse when laying down. It freaked me out a bit. I hadn't heard much of the side effects (or didn't listen to my doc beforehand) and started researching it after feeling them, so you can bet it was noticeable. I cut the pill in half so 1.25 mg/day, taken around lunch time and have since noticed far fewer side effects or none, except when I've taken at night time I noticed I woke up in the middle of the night with a higher heart rate (not racing). I've also noted a lower RHR the next day and has consistently reduced. So there's clearly a link between this drug and resting heart rate. I'm not sure I got the pericardial effusion. Also just FYI. Please consider getting a better mic if possible. Thank you

Hello ! Thanks for your comment. As mentioned, oral minoxidil does reduce blood pressure which will have the reflex effect of increasing resting heart rate. Some people will experience this more than others. It sounds like you may be quite sensitive to the medication and this is not something to be taken lightly. You mention that you have had chest tightness and symptoms of postural hypotension. I certainly recommend for this to be investigated by your doctor. I understand that you might be excited about the results of oral minoxidil for hair growth but, as with every medical treatment, careful balancing of pros and cons needs to be considered when it comes to hair growth vs cardiovascular health.

Hello Doctor. Thank you for the video. I am a hyper responder to medication. I would like to try oral minoxidil but start super low at 0.1mg a day. I would like to dissolve 5mg minoxidil in a 50ml solution and take 1ml a day. Or dissolve 5mg in 5ml and take 0.1ml a day oral, measured with a insuline syringe. What solution is ideal to dissolve minoxidil tablets? Would be distilled water work? Or things like alcohol (vodka?)? Because of intestinal inflammation I am taking low dose naltrexone for years now. And its been dissolved in distilled water. But I am not sure if minoxidil would dissolve in water as well?

Sir i have been using 5% topical minoxidil for 2 yrs now and this winter i developed heavy dandruff, sort of fungus like. I had to shave my head in December to clean my scalp but then it started happening again after a week or 2 and i had the similar condition in the February and i had to shave my head again. I went to dermatologist yesterday and she prescribed me 2.5mg oral minoxidil once a day after dinner instead of topical. My concern is will my hairs shed again like they did when i started topical minoxidil or the oral minoxidil will resume the effect of topical. i also have been reading on the internet that it is less effective than topical and hairs start to become weaker as the effect of topical minoxidil wears off and you lose your hairs which topical minoxidil saved or made stronger over the course of its use? I don't know why i started to develop dandruff with topical all of a sudden as there has been no change in my daily routine or diet. Topical was working great for me and i am afraid that i will lose my hairs after switching to oral.

Hello, I've been using 0.5 dutasteride a day for 1 year, I got the expected effect all over my hair, even in my crown area, new hair appeared, but I did not get the effects I expected in my front temple area. My question is, if I add 2.5 mg of oral minoxidil a day and continue on my way with dutasteride and quit oral minoxidil after 2 years, if I continue with dutasteride continuously, will the hair grown by oral minoxidil fall out? This is the most important question for me because of the fear of oral minoxidil, I would be very grateful if you could answer me.
@DrParissis
@DrParissis 11 ай бұрын
Hello. Unfortunately DHT inhibitors do not work as well with frontal temporal restoration as they do with the crown. I appreciate your question about whether dutasteride will retain minoxidil-induced hair growth. There is limited research on this. However, what we do know is that hair grown by minoxidil, whether oral or not, is generally dependent on continued minoxidil use.

@@DrParissis Thanks for the answer. My concern here is that when I stop minoxidil, my other hair, which is healthy but not in the shedding phase, may be affected by it. Apart from the hair it removes, does minoxidil affect my healthy hair negatively?

Thanks for reading this I hope your will reply soon 🥺❤️

30-50 hairs is very normal anything that passes 100 hairs a day is considered excessive make sure you're counting every fallen hair and don't stress about it because it could worsen the shedding :)

It's really tragic that after so many years and so much research we're still pushing Minoxidil and DHT blockers, both of which have little to no effect (but an array of side effects instead). Is this the best our scientific community can come up with?

Shedding is a good thing, it literally proves that the treatment is working by accelerating the growth cycle of your hair. Its only a bad thing if you don't understand this and then stop, because in that situation you've gotten rid of all your weaker hair without allowing the stronger hair to grow in.
