I believe the 'block-off plate' toward the back of the head is a throw back to the 'Low head". WC's and early WD's had a three inch head with a water manifold that connected to the thermostat housing hole and the back one. That manifold was deleted when they went to the four inch 'tall' head. Valve lash should be .015 cold. I really hate when they are supposed to be set "hot" First one you do is warm, by the time you get done, cool at best.

As a kid my dad showed me the oil dipstick trick. Works great when you need just a few drops of oil and you're far away from the shop and your oil can. You are the only other person I've seen use that technique. 👍

We just reset the valve lash on my son's MF 285 Perkins, we had to replace the #4 dry sleeve on it. I'm not crazy about doing the reset on those either, but it's gotta get done. I didn't have the valve tool, just the old fashioned wrench and screwdriver. My dad was good at doing that, like you I would guess myself on the setting and sometimes go back and reset them. You're getting it there, good luck on the rest of the job, have a good evening!

Copper coat is good and bad... it can save you if there is an uneven surface but it can also screw up torque specs on head bolts

Has far as I know that head was used though some of the D-series Allis chalmers, in which that flat plate would be use for the later style water temp sensors.

HI ROSS 😊😊 U should try 2 rise the engine block and the raditor it might help other most likely the raditor needs 2 be boiled out 2 get it cleaned out and the thermostat no good either Un less it's been replaced be 4 ross the engine block has dirt in 😮😮 over time and the years go by dirt holds and makes heat ross a another thing U can is use the air hose 2 clean the radiator fins out 😊😊 if not enough air U a back pack leave blower that works 2 clean both sides try it and see how the temperature is then the radiator needs 2 be full at times U don't want any air pockets in the cooling system 😊😊 OMG 7 4 2O24

With your equipment, hoe, bucket, and truck, you should be able to dig/scrape a 24'x24' surface flat under the space you are working in and haul in a layer of sand with your truck, then form the area with some 2x6 lumber and have 6 yards of fiber reinforced concrete delivered and con the boy next door or some relatives to come and help you work a scree board to smooth the surface flat. Use a bull float to do the final finish and you should be able to have a smooth concrete floor under the covered place you are working. Fiber-reinforced concrete delivered is about $150 a yard and sand for going under the concrete, you haul it in one of your grain trucks, which should not be that expensive so $1,500 tops and you have a nice hard surface to work on. Or like we are predisposed to do pile enough crap on it that we can only have enough workspace to fit in a small repair job. In my shop, I have too many tools and other equipment that require floor space plus every used part or piece of metal I cut off of the piece I am using gets tossed aside so in case I would need it, I would have it. That pile is now a landslide mountain of scrap. SHOP LIFE AND SHOP SPACE USAGE IS A REAL B***H OF A PROBLEM. I feel sorry for guys like that guy up north who keeps his shop spotless.
