Yeah, about 10 to 15 years ago my son and I work on the steering box on the White American 80, just a different color. It was my first time working on it and I wasn't sure about the o'ring under the blue ones, that with the shaft and the gear that was busted. I purchase a shop maintenance manual and parts manual to make sure I was doing it right, at that time. I did have to put a new steering arm on a year ago, which cost me a lot due to the lack of available parts, they had to modify one. You did a great job with it though, looks good to me. Thanks Ross, I hope you have a nice day!

Ross, it might take you longer to get it done because of the extra stuff but it'll be a lot better shape when the tractor leaves. Thanks Michael

The intricate pieces that turn a pile of parts into a living/breathing tractor can be daunting at times. I usually find that trying to hurry too much results in more wasted time due to overlooked parts, etc. Your experience on these jewels definitely shows!!!

Ji Case guy here, it is amazing how hard these Oliver tractors are to work on!!! Oliver engineers really hated Mechanics!!! So much sadness 😪

They’re not that bad. The 1850 diesel is a different animal because they adapted it to hold the Perkins engine.

My cousin has been a self employed tractor mechanic for 40 some years , and I have heard him say that they all can be a struggle. Been in his shop and seen more than one color. He just farms now, got tired turning wrenches.

Another great video Ross. It's always nice to see progress being made on these old tractors, only to have progress come to a halt because of someone else's negligence. But we keep on fighting on. Good luck with the rest of this project.

The steering unit is suspended by the cap. We always greased the wear surface as the cap was put on. Locktite and shake-proof washers should stop any loosing of those two bolts. We always laughed and called those bolts by the name of the bolts that hold the rotor on a helicopter, "The Jesus Bolts" as if they failed you just might be seeing Jesus. Or as John Force said a few years ago when he had a big fiery crash on the drag strip "I saw Elvis at 6,000 ft." His latest crash with a full slide slap of the retaining wall at 300 mph gave him a traumatic brain injury, a fractured sternum, and a damaged left wrist. Those top fuel cars are hitting 340 mph before the chutes come out and do it in 1,000 ft.

I’m not sure you’d die right away if the cap came off, but you’d sure notice 🤣

The steering gear in that 1850 is different than any other one I've seen before, It has teeth cut all the way around it where all the others I've seen had 1/2 as many and my parts book shows the same thing so this might have been replaced before and could be why its leaking. I know when a narrow front has bad T shaft bearings it wreaks havoc on the steering gear and will back the bolts out of the top cover but I've never seen that happen on a wide front before and makes me wonder about that steering gear. Thank you for a great tutorial on this procedure. I, though, have need of information on the workings of the spindle assembly. Specifically, what does the inner shaft ride on within the outer tube? Is there some sort of thrust washer or bearing? I ordered and have received two bushings; as there was also a lot of play between the inner shaft and the vertical tube. It appears the one on my 1755 has had the spindle base riding on the bottom of the outer tube and wearing it. I acquired the tractor this spring and am also in the process of replacing the bearings and, now that I discovered the hub was missing the section where the seal rests, replacing the hub as well. Also, in one of your other videos you show a cupped piece that is to be driven on to the base. Do you have a source for that? Thank you again for all the info you provide in an entertaining fashion.
