!!! Seems that freon, the taskbar app I use in Gnome to check temperatures is faulty. It is reporting a temp of about 10C higher than true SoC temp!!! So idle it is 49C and maxed out 71C. The NVMe does get hot in this case. Always above 60C and even goes over 70C with high use. Issues fixes ------ !!! Fix for the mouse lag in Wayland Gnome. Thanks for the review. Wonder why they did not put another aluminum collum on the case to take the heat off the board's PMIC. It is widely known that other that the SoC itself, the PMIC is also the hottest component on an SBC. Btw, it would be very useful if you could do a comparison between Orange Pi 5 running on the latest OS with the latest kernel and drivers vs Raspberry Pi 5.

I've added thermal paste between case and alum. brick block and it seems be better at least a few degrees. Case gradually goes quite hot. I intend to add some ventilation wholes and maybe even fan to cool it better.

With my OPI5 case I use a thermal tape under the cpu so that the metal plate there absorbs some heat too.

Thank you this answered one of my future questions about fanless cases/operations. I have been playing with the OP 5+ for a side-project. Currently using the Armbian/Jammy I find similar issues with chromium but not other browsers. I'm not really using any browser so this is a low priority. I think this is a cool/powerful SBC and has a lot of potential but the "quirks" remind me its still in early stages of user adoption. Good luck on working out the issues. I'm lucky most of my applications are either CLI or a very basic GUI.

Thank you for this info. Helps to know others have it too. The Chromium browser has VPU and GPU acceleration so I suspect that to be the problem. I need to test some non-Armbian images to see if they have this problem too with the amazingfate ppa's. Greetings.

That is weird. Plays fine here. Will be a yt bug I suspect. I also sometimes have it that a video stops playing mid-video and I have to refresh to get it started again. Cheers.

Offical spec(got it from support) says that it needs 2.5mm thermal pads on ram and 1mm on CPU. Kinda weird that I don't have issues with overheating, perhaps my load is casual. I plan to add thermal paste between alum. brick and the top panel. I think there's nothing now. I use Joshua Riek's distro and I used your Gaming Script and it was not throttling in WoW 3.3.5 for 20 minutes(but it was barely playable tho :D).

My test is 30ninutes all cores maxed out. Not a normal task. It would not have overheated as much with normal tasks. But it's not acceptable for me. I also suspect not all rk3588 run at the same temps. Some seem to run cooler with smaller heatsink.

I took off the heatsync it came with and replaced with my own fan. Unscrew the heatsync, pull it off the pegs, and then bend the pegs with pliers. they pop out smoothly, almost as if they were glued on. now you will have all the space to add your own fan. If you so choose, you can drill a few holes for circulation but it seems fine as the case doesn't seal tight anyways, and definitely better than without the fan

Yeah, those pads are sketchy. You need to press them hard for all surfaces to gain contact. Is there news on PanThor driver for this Mali GPU?

There are mainline images with Panthor from Balbes150 for OPi5. Not sure if they work on OPi5+ too. forum.armbian.com/topic/27588-kernel-62-hdmi-usb-lan-etc-for-opi5/ I've not yet tried them. I'm now focused on getting vendor to run well with Armbian. Panfork gets 1026 glmark2 on X11 Panthor gets 781 glmark2 on x11 Panfork gets 1315 glmark2 on Wayland Panthor gets 2314 Not sure if these numbers are anything to go on. Different kernel, driver, image, version of glmark2... But seems it performs better on wayland....

I tried mine out before I plugged in the fan, and I never got above 55C while compiling a large C++ codebase. Maybe it’s the silicon lottery, as mine tops out at 2.35 ghz. Also, Chromium is extremely slow on Jammy for some reason, and firefox-esr crashes all the time. Only the firefox snap is working 😢

I'm looking into the chromium problem. I've been using RK3588 for months as main desktop and don't have those issue's(Meko-Mini). But I do not want to update/upgrade to find out if it would be the same. Indeed the silicon lottery seems a big factor with RK3588. I expected the case to perform way better actually. I'll have to test my different RK3588 with the same heatsink to see what difference there is. They all have a different base clockspeed on big cores. Between 2.2Ghz and 2.4Ghz. Good topic for a new video. With setting to 2.4Ghz it doesn't seem to be running hotter. At least not measurable enough. Greetings.

@@adamschackart6859 I know people who use panfork on Bookworm. But they've build everything manually. There are instructions online somewhere but they're long and hard.

To review it. Gathering information, fixing bugs, testing different Armbian images... It is not my board, I'll send it back when I'm done with my research. And he'll have a free metal case in return.
