Cabs and speakers have so much character and NOBODY can bring attention to their subtleties like you. I understand wanting to simplify and control parameters for uniformity. Without breathing cabs and speakers, I fear we will lose the most compelling caveats, where opportunities for learning and discovery abound.

The Orange has a smooth distortion that seems to compress the pick attack no matter what. Whenever you switch to it that distinctive Orange roar comes through. Very cool. That said, that D-Moll is much more my speed. What a cool amp. And my vote is for real amp. It's more fun when you're having more fun.

Rockerverb is one example where Amplitube really helped me. I tried out a Rockerverb trial head on amplitube and immediately fell in love with it. Even though I don't really have any need such a powerful head in my current situation, if I ever did, I wouldn't hesitate to grab it.

I was borrowing a friends 100 watt Mk3 at the same time Line 6 released their version of the Rockerverb in the Helix and hearing their version had me satisfied with that for a little while. I used to use the rockerverb with a boost for years when playing live. Maybe not the ideal fit for modern metal but it offers something different that I think is beautiful. I don’t think the evh needs the boost in this test. Sounds tight from the start. Of course this will differ when played in dropped Z. :D Diezel sounds cool! Thanks for showing us the various sounds.

Thanks for this video. Well done! I like the sound of the EVH 5150 III much better than the sounds of the Rockerverb III. And if I regard the prices, the decision is very simple: buy a 5150 III, skip the overpriced Orange. With one exception: if you play mainly Stoner Rock or Stoner Doom or similar styles, the Rockerverb with its more muffled sound may fit better. By the way: I think it has become a very very bad fashion to make amp review videos without real speakers. I am very happy if a youtuber uses real speakers and real cabs instead of some IRs.

For those still watching: switch off Stable Volume! I actually like the notched pots and love the non-boosted sound of my MK III in drop-C. You can make Rockerverb tighter by boosting, but I believe you can't make 5150's lows to roar like Rockerverb. ;) Clean channel gets nicer with more volume and you can always compensate with attenuator.
@KaiDown4 ай бұрын
Rockerverb is the most versatile least versatile amp imo. It's got the full range of gain you'd expect to see, but it only truly shines at the mid to high gain area. That said, that one Rockerverb tone is phenomenal, and worth owning the amp for. I've got the MKII 100W - no notched pots, but no attenuator. Hard tradeoff to make.
@TheOtherJohnBrowne4 ай бұрын
That is a tough one. The notched pots irritate me a lot but the attenuator is killer
@jamescassidy40453 ай бұрын
Also, FYI, the Mk1 has fully variable pots. No detented pots anywhere. Way better for the gain, because with the way the Orange gain is, it can be literally a mm, or two that make the difference, especially with the 4 gain stages. I love to go right where the third stage kicks in, and back it off what would be 1/2 a step on your pots here, but wouldn't be possible with the detented pots. I don't understand why Orange did that. I'd be mega annoyed too.
@TheOtherJohnBrowne3 ай бұрын
Yes! THANK YOU! I find the gain needs to be set very meticulously on Oranges. A detented gain pot is just counter productive here

I think, i'd love to hear both real cabs and IRs, if you can fit both types into the same video, please. can your KHE amp switcher handle cabs, also? or can you ad an cab switcher? i've heard of a few. how many different tube guitar amp heads can the KHE handle , 4 or 8? can you play 2 amps at the same time, like an Axe Fx 3 does? Great video and playing. i was surprised at how decently the Orange did to the 2 better amps. i have a Herbert, and before this video, i never would have consedered the rockerverb a decent amp. thanks.
@metalfiend21123 ай бұрын
My mistake, doe IR impulse response refer to amps as well as cab IRs? until now, reading up only on getting an axe fx possobly in the future, they call the amps, amps, and the 1,000 cabs in it IRs. Amps and Cabs are both referred to as IRs? i havent read up on kemper profilers yet.
@TheOtherJohnBrowne3 ай бұрын
IRs just replicate the cab/mic/mic preamp part of circuit. My KHE can do four amps and four cabs. I believe it can do dual cabs but no dual amps

I looove the Rockerverb sound. It's VERY intense in the midrange, which is why I'm not currently using it in my two-guitar post-metal band... But I really want to. 😅 Modern or not, it's a helluvan amp, can sound calm and pretty, "claw your face off"-aggressive and most everything in between. I'm glad you included the reverb trick. I think the notched knobs are a minor annoyance, now that I own the amp. I don't really think about them, but I was very concerned prior to buying the amp. I like cabs when I'm playing by myself or with the band, but for shootout purposes and KZbin, I'd say you can do what suits your use case best. IRs are like a controlled environment all on their own, nothing changes, and you don't accidentally bump the mic. Besides, you're pretty adept at making cool sounding IRs, so perhaps that's the route for you to go? ❤

@@TheOtherJohnBrowne Yeah, four 6V6's. It's def different compared to the 2/3. Im sure you could mod it to use just two 6L6/EL34, but its the 6v6's I love. Its still the same gain structure as any other RV, but the 6v6's just make it sound more compressed, and a bit more scooped/chewy. TBH, by itself it's not always what you want, especially compared to El34's/6L6's etc, but blending w/ other Amps is where this thing is majic.
