You've quickly and easily become one of my favorite KZbinrs. I really like your sort of low-key style, and it helps it's a refreshment from the typical loud and "I got to have a bunch of flashy edits to keep the viewers' attention" style that is very common of so many others. I love how we can feel that you have such a real and genuine passion for gaming. It's really wholesome. Because of this I've watched nearly all of your videos, and am always looking forward to new uploads. I hope as your channel continues to grow you don't fall into the traps I've watched far too many other KZbinrs stumble into, too many become annoying, self centered, entitled, and rude as their channels hits high subscriber milestones. I hope you just continue to be true to yourself (of course this doesn't mean learning and growing is not to be welcomed). On the flip side, if you ever feel too drained, burnt out, or have any other reason, don't feel like you owe us new videos. Take care of yourself first and foremost. I wish you the best as your channel continues to grow 👍.

Yes... exactly! I much prefer these videos of real people to those flash cut cut cut fast-talking guy desperately trying to keep your attention type videos. I'm really new here, but loving these videos, and along with Food4Dogs, orbalology is rapidly becoming one of my favourite gamer KZbinrs... you can feel the love of gaming in both channels. I was a Commodore 64 kid myself, but my partner (who is also a huge gaymer) found and bought me the original versions of Ultima IV and Ultima V... and if that wasn't enough, the Persona Q 3DS console. We both love video games (he was more into the Nintendo side of things, which I didn't get into until the Wii). I love it when orbalology says she'll get to playing certain games one day. My one weakness is buying collector's editions and merch... I have such an enormous backlog of games that I don't think I have enough life left to play them all at the rate that I'm playing. He's moving to be with me soon (long distance relationship of two years) in Hawaii, and we are excited to merge our game collection (there will be a ton of duplicates) and come up with a really elegant way of showing them off that is humidity controlled so that they'll stay in good condition against the killer humidify of Hawaiian life. We met in an LGBT gamer site and he messaged me out of the blue and it's been wonderful since. Seven more weeks until he moves here!

What a lovely video to start the day with! 😊 I'm glad you were able to find that beautiful copy of A Link to the Past! It must be a wonderful feeling to be reunited with such a special game from your past 🥰 Also, I think the lack of manuals in modern releases is one of the saddest things. When I was a kid, I read my Grandia II manual so often that it eventually fell apart 😅 They're not only interesting for story and character descriptions, artwork, etc. but are also really helpful references! I often find myself having to google small things like 'What does this symbol mean?' or 'What does this stat do in this game?' and I wish I could just flick through a manual to find the answer 😪

It was such an indescribable feeling! Even looking at the box sitting on my shelf right now is giving me all the warm and fuzzy feelings 🥰 I agree, I often referenced the manuals too as a convenient way to look up things! It's sad how we're expected to just rely on the internet for most answers nowadays 😭

Your voice is very calming. I'm fairly new to your channel, but I love listening to someone re-collect some of their childhood games. I can definitely tell you're passionate. GBA was my first handheld. I didn't have a large collection, but I had Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire Pinball, Super Mario Advance 4 (SMB3), Minish Cap, and a few of those Pokemon video cartridges. Don't really play my GBA much these days, but still remember the fond memories of playing these in the backseat of a car while on road trips. Got nauseated along the way at times, but definitely worth it in the end. Hope you can make it to 20K subscribers!

I love hearing stories about how people got into the things they love, whether it's video games, sci-fi, whatever! It's like each of our "secret origins". And of course, recalling those days of childhood when life was seemingly so much simpler is always fun. And count me in as somebody who really misses the instruction booklets too. I think it's kind of funny that back in the day when there were so many fewer buttons, you were still given instructions as to how they all worked. But today, when there are so many more buttons (and button combinations), we must commit them all to memory! Congrats on hitting the 10k mark and I look forward to many more videos from you!

Origin stories can be a lot of fun! And that is a true irony - games nowadays are too bogged down by multiple tutorials and relying on looking things up online. Makes me a bit wistful for the simpler times :) And thank you!!

My first handheld was the gameboy dmg. Only had a handful of games but played Wario land the most tho..until pokemon came out. Upgraded to the gba later on and was still very much occupied playing pokemon yellow. Hundreds of hours of playing, leveling up my team and having all of my favorite pokemon. The amazement and utter excitement when I found out I could use my own pokemon in pokemon stadium on nintendo 64. Such a unique time that it truly is one of those saying where you had to be there to know. Once I started really playing what the gba had to offer I realized that as far as my most memorable handheld games it holds the top spot. Games like Golden Sun kept me glued to my gba for hours. The gba also was unique in the way that for the first time we were seeing actual games that appeared on the nes and snes being ported to a handheld. I ultimately decided to do an blacklight screen mod and case swap for my game boy advance.

The one GB game I remember playing was Pokemon Red. It was originally my older brother's game and game system. He did give it to me as a birthday present which sadly I was upset about when I first got it not realizing how much I would appreciate it later. It was some time later where I was able to pick up a copy of both Gold and Silver but the battery on Gold was dead so didn't save. I then moved onto the GBA and GBA SP picking up all of Gen 3 Pokemon games as well as a few others. Out of the systems I bought on my own which I really appreciated was the original DS (yes the big flipping over dual screen version) as well as eventually the 2DS. I didn't pick up the 3DS version because my eyes have issues with 3D stuff so figured 2DS would be cheaper. I'm also a big fire type fan for Pokemon and almost always use a fire starter with my games. I do suggest getting into the Golden Sun games. My experience with them is the DS version Dark Dawn which would be #3 in the series. A couple other of my GBA games are marble madness and Mario Kart Super Circuit. I want to say Super Circuit is either the first or second in the Mario Kart line. How many times have you visited Vintage Stock or a store like it? Often times they have the much older games but like you said, having the box with them is a rare thing.

Congrats on the 10k! I used to keep every box for every GBA game I had. at one point I had drawer in my dresser that was full of them. I know stuff for both FE games, Fire Red and F-zero among others.

Retro collecting is something else. I'm fortunate in that for the most part I managed to keep most of the games I had as a child. It also helped that I was into roleplaying games back in the day so I avoided a lot of the higher prices later on reacquiring games had I lost or sold them. I've come to feel pretty disheartened at retro collecting in general though. For the things that I do hope to eventually pick up.. pretty much all of them are at least $100 or more. Often games costing $200 or $300+ as well. It's one of the many drawbacks of being a CIB collector. It's why for the most part I've switched over to modern/past gen stuff. Games you can still find at retailers. Stuff that goes on sale, etc. To me it doesn't feel like a compromise. It's nice that if I spend $200 I can end up with half a dozen fantastic games instead of just one SNES game that has the box and manual. I still keep my eyes open for good deals on retro stuff but it's few and far between. Maybe it's my particular interests. Either way, hopefully you are able to recollect all of your childhood copies without much heartache. It helps that you have some of the manuals already if you're going for complete copies. It's more flexibility in allowing you to pick up a game/box lot and piece together a complete copy anyway.
@orbalology Жыл бұрын
Thankfully I'm mostly just looking for loose carts for the GB systems! I definitely can't do CIB at the current prices 😅 I think finding whatever balance that works for you is best! I've been collecting a lot of modern/last gen games these last few years so I felt it was time to start working in a few nostalgic games back into my collection. Definitely won't be going super deep into retro collecting because I still really enjoy modern/last gen collecting :)

Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions is available for free on your phone. I've downloaded it every time I've replaced my phones. It stays true to the original game and throws in new surprises along the way. It's almost like having the original in your hands. When it comes to old games, I'm sure you're aware of them all, and considering that, I can only recommend 5 RPGs and 2 other games from the SNES that created the Metroidvania genre... Super Metroid and Super Castlevania 4... Final Fantasy 6. Secret of Mana. Secret of Evermore. Mario RPG. And, of course, the SNES grail- Chrono Trigger.

This one spoke to me so much. I would say 90% of my collecting is rebuying games that I traded in to GameStop back in the day. I've been very lucky that a lot of the games I'm looking for have not skyrocketed in price. My PS1 collection I just finished a year ago or so. Wii needs about 3 games, PS2 is 5 or so. Gameboy.... that one's a bit of a mess and is gonna take some work to get back 😅

Haha, yeah I guess we all have to start from somewhere 😅 It's really unfortunate looking back on the trading in practices many of us went through and how that was often the only way to play new games as kids. I've been contemplating picking up more PS2 games too and while most of the games I played as a kid are not that expensive right now (and thankfully I have most of my childhood favorites for the system still), it's those niche JRPGs that I never got to experience and look really cool that would really do me in 🙈
@JoeNayDoh Жыл бұрын
@@orbalology Oh I completely understand why I traded in those games but I'm still disappointed at my past self for doing it lol. The "games you missed" are always a slippery slope though. Really glad I did because I would not be buying them now with current prices. I've become a lot more picky now with my retro game collecting, but I'm very happy with my collection. Thanks for sharing your collection. There is so much nostalgia here.

Congrats on 10K! Your channel is the first "small" I started following towards the beginning. So it's been fun to watch your journey of building the channel and interacting along with you on the way. I hope your discord gets launched soon so all other like minded individuals can come together and have a place to chill and talk. 😁 In terms of GB/GBA collecting, I too went with loose games so I could save on costs. Another reason I did this is because I started buying cases from a website called customgamecases. They use good quality plastic cases that have the same dimensions as DS/3DS games. The cases are quite sturdy, the paper they use for the cover is also pretty good. However the image quality is just ok (at least one the ones I have.) The price is also reasonable too. At $5.50 I think it's great alternative to buying CIB games and shelling out a load of money. Should have bought more when they are only $4. ㅜㅜ Having GB-3DS lined up together using same dimension cases has been pretty fun to look at! Once again congratulations on 10K, and heres to another 10K and beyond in the future! Excited to see what's in store for you! 😄

Thank you! I'm hoping to launch the discord not too long after I'm settled in my new place. Or that's the goal right now 😅 I've heard good things about the custom cases - though I haven't decided if I want to commit to that yet or not. They look really cool but I'm not sure space-wise if it would be good to add them to a shelf like that vs. in a tea organizer box (I'm still a bit concerned that my new place won't have a lot of room to accommodate most of my current collections, so I should hopefully be able to determine that soon😅). I also don't really see my GB collection becoming too large, but if it does I'll probably need to consider some alternative storage options haha.

Congratulations on that very clean CIB of Link to Past GBA. I actually bought a CIB of the SNES version recently and sent it to CGC for grading. Not to resell but to encapsulate my childhood and to make the copy official/authentic since it is my favorite game of all time. Now it is displayed nicely on my shelf. I’ve actually spent over $5000 this past year rebuying all my GBC, GBA, SNES favorites. My only regret is that I didn’t start slower and bought only CIB or better. Now I am slowly working toward upgrading my loose copies so I am spending more money in the long run. I hope your journey to getting back these older games go well and that you’ll pick up great games you have fond memories of at great prices. As for the analogue pocket. I pre-ordered one 8 months ago and I still haven’t received it. So good luck with that. You should also look into getting the dock

This may or may not change eventually, but I'm glad to have started nevertheless collecting for the Game Boy systems :) And yeah I have no expectations it'll be arriving anytime soon, hoping for December but we'll see😅 I keep hearing a lot of people complaining about the dock and how they're worried about breaking the plug when taking the system in and out of it.

Congrats on the 10K subs! As someone that owns a pocket and loves JRPGs, just be careful if you decide to play them on the Pocket. Save both in game and use save states. There are some issues with the Pocket and deleting the actual saves on carts and even on roms using OpenFPGA. I don't know the specifics but apparently this is a known issue and hasn't been fixed yet. I'm pretty lucky and only lost a 5 hour save of Fire Emblem; but someone lost a 95 hour save on their Pokémon Red. Personally I went back to using my IPS modded SP until this issue gets fixed. Still use my Pocket for non-RPGs since it is really nice to use...just don't trust it with saves.

There are so many Game Boy games that I wish I still had from when I was younger. Dragon Warrior III, Fire Emblem, various gen I-III Pokemon games, Tactics Advanced, both Zelda games you showed off, all sorts of various games I keep wanting to play, but being unable due to trading them away because I didn't know any better. I'm down to 3 GBA games now, Golden Sun, Golden Sun TLA, and Kingdom Hearts CoM. My first game for Game Boy was Pokemon Gold, and also started with Cyndaquil first. I feel like I may eventually trying to collect the childhood games I played, especially the ones I have really fond memories of, such as Oracle of Ages, Fire Emblem, FF Tactics Advanced, Pokemon Gold, Dragon Warrior III, and a few others I never got a chance to play. Back in middle school for some reason, our "school news" type thing by students that was broadcast to the whole school had commercials. That's where I first saw the trailer for Golden Sun TLA, and having loved the first game I remember being so excited for it to come out. I still remember a few of the characters I made in Dragon Warrior III as well.

Congratulations on 10,000 subscribers!🎉 I find the Gameboy Advance so interesting compared to the original Gameboy. The latter seemed to be out for a long time without many great games (at least pre-Pokemon). I had Zelda: Link's Awakening on the old, grey brick model and loved it, my first Zelda games and first game I played with an explorable world. I remember being so excited for Oracle of Ages but never seemed to get round to playing it much and the cartridge then died on me pretty quickly which was a shame, hope to go back to it on Nintendo Switch Online and give it a fair shot. I got Pokemon Blue as my first Pokemon game and then Gold (I always seem to pick the less popular versions!) - imported from the USA as I was too excited to wait for them, was reading in magazines for years about Pocket Monsters and how Nintendo was not convinced it would be a success outside of Japan! I always pick the Water types as my starters, Moltres/Ho-oh used to cover me for Fire. Blastoise's high defence used to help me in the tournaments they held around the country. I heard that Gold/Silver cartridges can have issues with the batteries used to track time of day running out, I guess there will be some specialists who can fix them. (By the way I am with you on Gen2 being the favourite, that post-game was amazing for a Gameboy game back in the day!) I have a lot of GBA games that I would like to be able to play again (Golden Sun 1 & 2, Advance Wars 1 & 2, Mario & Luigi, Fire Emblem, F-Zero, Doom, Chu Chu Rocket, FF Tactics Advance - cannot think of another console that had so many great games so quickly). I would be really interested in your thoughts on the Analogue Pocket once you have it as I have considering it myself.

And lol, it's funny looking back at past articles and seeing what many companies (& authors) were predicting when it comes to franchise popularity :) The gen 2 postgame was so cool! And it was such a delight discovering that feature as a kid. I had no idea it was there until I beat the elite four the first time and was so confused when the game was telling me to go on some boat to a distant land. Never would have guessed there was a whole other world to explore!

I had that same AP Gameboy as a kid too and the only game I had was red, which is why I have no desire to collect for it and why I've kept all my 3DS stuff. I occasionally take my 3DS out to wish a FE friend happy birthday, or get in a couple quick games of Smash, but other than that I'm too busy collecting data. I find the rules to collecting retro games funny, like upgrading to a longer lasting battery that isn't from a certain manufacturer decreases the price of the Gameboy cartridge. Also, I know the kid me would've struggled with that configuration of cables at 8:56, maybe the Zelda titles were always intended to be the hardest multiplayer games, hence the name Link, lol.
@BespokeSlipp Жыл бұрын
@@two-nichegaming4482 Had no idea the battery manufacturer played such a role in value, glad you said this! I’m considering upgrading my batteries soon
@two-nichegaming4482 Жыл бұрын
Some collectors focus on authenticity and others focus on utility. For example: if you had a complete American Gameboy collection and felt you needed to have the latest Limited Run Gameboy titles in your collection to retain your 'complete' status and Limited Run "hypothetically" chose to have their own branded battery it might be harder (more expensive) to find the correct battery later in life, to retain value. To some serious collectors, even having an American battery in a Japanese cartridge could warrant accusations of trying to sell them a fake game. In my opinion, the correct approach is simply not using a cheap battery you'd have to change often, or could potential leak and ruin the inside of the cartridge, but If I was into collecting batteries I would play Fabraz's 'Demon Turf' in my free time, lol.
