On the 17th of september 2021 our boat and a few others were approached by 2 orcas near Cabo da Roca, Portugal.
We suffered some minor damages on the tiller. Underwater the rudder looks fine, but will be further inspected. Two of the other boats were not so lucky and lost steering.

@@kiwisailor8365 they're not that dumb. They understand that a fin under water stears the boat so they bite it to mess it up. If you look at their formations and some redicously advanced tactics they use depending on underwater terrain, when they hunt, it's obvious they aren't dumb. I was watching analysis of their tactic in some place, where they like to hunt, 90% of the people couldn't come up with that. It's not some random crap. They use like 2 orcas to swim on certain depth , 1 orca with a bit delayed timing to intercept from front, one flanking on different depth from side at different time, it's like 8 orcas with different timings, different roles, different depths, different positions at different parts of terrain all combined into a strategic plan.

oh my god.. so many stupid adds and comments and so little understanding.... these wales are coming to you cause they are curiousm thes `try` what comes to their home because it is their home and not ours or any area or hotel or fun that you can book because you `paid` for it. It is the deep open blue sea and if you are goin there you haven`t just to, but you definatelys must expect that there are `others` and this is happening not just since several but than millions of years. It is possible that they just are cunning. It is also possible that any stupid or cold dumbass has attacked injured or killed other whales, family members, children or individuals they knew before. it is also possible that they were feeded many times by other sailors before. it is also possible that they are not good on any humans in their territorial. it is also possible that they really want to destroy your boat cause they see a concurring rival in you. who knows? what we do and must know is that we should treat them respectfully and patient and friendly as it isn`t up to us to kill, injure or distract or torture or even kill other creatures. look how nice they are and how calm"! if they were aggressive they would behave in other ways. We will never accept or understand how egoistic selfish and silly lots of mllions of humans really are. you need to respect and coexcist instead of attacking or really hurting them you dullheads! get used to the fact that especially the polluted sea isn`t your holiday playground and help em as much as you can. make love not war even if they disrupt your journey, steering or whatever. there is and was a reason why theses comrades behave that way. regrets

Orcas and other marine life are disturbed by the loud, annoying noises that an echo sounder produces. Also, at this point of the Bay of Biscay, the fishermen fish the tuna (or salmon?) away from the orcas, which swim a lot at the edge. I think the orcas know what they're doing. You get problems with a hung rudder.. this year we are also sailing this route with our Monsun 31. I'm a bit tense about it too, but sailing out of the Bay of Biscay is unfortunately not an option for us. We engage with nature, turn off the sonar, keep the tiller environment clear, and hope these beautiful animals are kind to us. 🤞🏼

@@bigcountry9457 Hitting or scaring a bear or a shark once it gets close to you is the best way to get it away, even though they could rip you apart with very little effort. People anthropomorphize animals too much, it isn't gonna get "angry" and decide it wants to fight you because you disrespected or upset it, animals are looking for easy pray or just having fun, they have a strong instict of self preservation, they can very well get scared and decide its not worth it. Its interesting to note how every single boat who reports damage also reports doing nothing and being passive, I wonder how many people manage to scare them off but dont talk about it because they would be overran by authorities or animal rights people.
@bigcountry9457

@@ah940 I understand what point you are making but I still disagree in this situation, you are simply wasting time. I also disagree in situations where people are being attacked by a grizzly bear. There are plenty of example where hunters have tried to scare a charging grizzly bear a way by firing a warning shot to no avail. This simply doesn't work with most apex predators (Orcas and grizzly bears). Hence the reason they tell you to play dead if you are attacked by a grizzly bear and not fight and try to scare it. However, I will tell you that if it was me on the sailboat I would not be sitting by passively for no other reason than that has demonstrated that it doesn't work. I would put my boat in reverse and go as fast as possible backwards. I heard a captain of another ship say this and thought it was genius. Reason being, most of these sailboats have the rudders located behind the propeller. The orcas risk very little damage or injury swimming up to the rudder when the vessel is going forward but when in reverse now they have to navigate getting around the spinning propeller. I doubt the would give it a go and risk injury. Worth a try to me, I know it may sound mean but it's better than being stranded without a rudder.

At the end of the day we invade their natural habitat, we do it voluntary, they have no choice, so respect it and hope they calm down. @@nottheone582 ADDs and AHDs (Acoustic Deterrence and Harassment Devices) are totally legal. Plus people have a right to protect their property from damage caused by these creatures. In addition, if the coast guard is there to issue fines then why the hell aren't they helping to stop the attack?!?

Are you cussing at the Orcas for messing with your rudder? They are just poking you in the eye, they know the rudder is a connection to you on the deck. What do you expect, they live there…
