It's interesting to me that this stuff is the "final 10%" in your writing process, because to me the interplay between voices is the absolute core of my writing process. My music tends not to stick with strong identifiable melodies, but overlapping ostinatos are all over the place. I have found, from listening to music over the years, that songs get away with being less complicated because the voice and lyrics already provide so much detail and interest. Purely instrumental pieces structured like songs generally feel a bit incomplete to me if they don't have some extra layers.
