I'm glad you enjoyed it. The aerial footage was perilous: cameraman hanging out of the side of a helicopter. Long before drones of course! Best wishes from Tony Staveacre (director)

Connaissant parfaitement les albums de Mike Oldfield depuis Tubular Bells, les ayant tous eu depuis les années 73's, je n'avais jamais vu cet Orchestral Hergest Ridge, Superbe.

As fabulous as part one. This proves again Oldfield´s genius - he was twenty, when he composed this masterpiece.

Beautiful work is a sound poem of deep nostalgia, it takes me to the neighborhoods of Ñuñoa where I studied my high school in the late 70s. Greetings from Santiago de Chile. .... and thanks mrranMúsica for sharing.

I have just watched this to the end - and noticed that you were the original director of this and of the Orchestral Tubular Bells clips. Many many thanks for posting these on You tube and for getting them made in the first place. I like all the focus work on individual instruments in the TB filming. You seem to have had very limited camera positions with which to work back in the 70s. You've made a lot of MO fans very happy by putting this up.
@tonystaveacre71219 жыл бұрын
***** Thanks, Roy. Yes you are right, the camera positions were dictated by unsold tickets. Also the lighting was a bit hit and miss. But still, I'm glad it's being enjoyed 40 years on!Best wishes,TonyS

Thanks for posting this. Now you can hear what MO intended with a full orchestra. I wish someone would do this now, full out with the London Symphony and the English Chorale....

My second LP ever and surely this led to a path of a highly welcomed non-conformity in musical behaviours of mine since over 30 years! Mike Oldfield just reemerged here for me and I am very proud to rediscover this! Hope that Hergest Ridge will have very soon a rediscovery either classic (!!!) or progressive or folk, the time is more than ripe for this!!!

I remember hearing this on the newly started Capital radio in England when the album was released. They played the whole album, non stop. I went out and bought it, then I bought Tubular Bells. Always preferred this, actually. Nostalgia overdose.

Marc Cantin Dear Marc,I hope you have a bit of English, I have very little French. This film was shot by me in 1974 or 1975. I was a young director working for BBC-tv Music & Arts. I had previously directed Tubular Bells (Part 1 ) in a BBC studio, and so we thought the orchestral concert would be interesting. I also knew David Bedford very well. The aerial shots of a glider flying over the Ridge were filmed by my cameraman Fred Hamilton, hanging out of the side of a helicopter, with me holding onto his belt. It was very cold, but the light on that moment on that day was just extraordinary. I'm so glad you enjoyed it.With very best wishes,Tony Staveacre

Tony Staveacre Hi Tony, thank you so much for these informations. As you can see, yes.....I do have more than a bit of english :). I guess everyone has his own story about Hergest Rigde. When I first heard the original version, it was late september in the province of Quebec, the fall and it's beautiful colors had begun....each time I'm listening to HR, it' s kind of a reminiscence of fall.....it became for me, an annual ritual of listening to it during...the fall season only......exactly the same way we listen to christmas records in....december. Your video......the light.....the ambiance....reaches very much my "own world", that strong image built-into myself ( the story does not tell if MO was in such moods while composing it) . Since you relate to the cold, I guess there a synchronicity with your filming and the fall equinox....am I wright ? Thank you again for you answer, I never thought the original producer himself would reply....merci beaucoup Monsieur :) c'est fantastique....quel superbe artefact des années 70....

Amazing orchestration, to replicate this album. Mike Oldfield was reputed to wear out his tapes in the studio with so many over-recordings and dubbings.
@timweatherill37386 жыл бұрын
You're right. In the case of Hergest Ridge, he really screwed the tapes so badly, the version released was not in any way ideal. I was always annoyed by the poor quality of the recording because I think Hergest Ridge is his best composition ~ my favourite, anyway. Cheers.

Thanks also from me, TonyS, lovely bit of Oldfield/Bedford memorabilia. There can't be too many films of Bedford conducting. Don't think the Orchestral Hergest Ridge album was even released here in Canada. Didn't know it existed until I saw this some months back. The Orchestral Tubular Bells did get a release here however.

I hate to write this but I honestly think that Hergest ridge the orchestral version here is a far far better version than Mike released upon the official album,,, yet in my opinion the same can not be said when it comes to the orchestral version of Tubular bells, to my mind that per4mance was very poor...
@royhumphrey497 жыл бұрын
Sorry but the conductor (Devid Bedford) is simply beating time and leading instruments in. His mode of dress is an insult to the orchestra and the potential that Mike Oldfield could have developed. There is no interpretation or dynanisism that say, Gustavo Dudamel could introduce. Frankly it sounded dull - a piece to be filed away in the 70s and not brought to life in the 10s.
