All you need to know in order to begin composing for the trumpet. This orchestration video explores the Trumpet as a solo instrument and in the context of playing as part of an ensemble of Trumpets or wider Brass, and explains the rather confusing matter of transposition, taken that the Trumpet can be presented in any one of a number of transposed keys. The impact of the Trumpet in different parts of its range is demonstrated, along with special effects that are characteristic. This video will be of assistance to anyone wishing to write for Trumpet, for anyone seeking to improve their Orchestration skills. It’s a fascinating instrument with a long history that is capable of adding power to the loudest corners, yet also of being used for more delicate passages, or to deliver special effects.

I have never understood why instruments transpose to begin with, but maybe I heard something about the ease of the fingerings, whatever that means.
@MusicMattersGB
@MusicMattersGB Жыл бұрын
Yes there are historic reasons why transposing instruments exist - fingering, no valves on brass instruments originally etc.

I do not know if you have time to explain it, but i am still confused about how a disparity between the notation and the sound can be due to instrument construction.
@MusicMattersGB
@MusicMattersGB Жыл бұрын
This topic has very odd history but, for example, before valves one could simply ask a brass player to play in the key of C and use crooks (differing lengths of tubing) to change the key. The crooks enabled them to play the open notes of the harmonic series in any key while the player stayed where (s)he was.
@the_eternal_student
@the_eternal_student Жыл бұрын
@@MusicMattersGB It sounds as if you are saying the notation diverged from the sound when a new horn was introduced, but that it, the notation, changed for no reason. What am I missing?
@MusicMattersGB
@MusicMattersGB Жыл бұрын
Yes. It means a Horn player, for example, could carry on reading in say C major but simply change the crooks to match the key everyone else was using. Pre valves brass instruments could only play the notes in the harmonic series so by changing crooks they had the essential notes in whichever key was required.
