I have Anacheilium (Encyclia) radiata which looks like yours. Mine has ovoid bulbs that taper to strappy leaf pairs. It blooms between these leaves. The scent starts as hyacinth and ends as carcass. It fills a room. It is beautiful.

It's a funny thing about fragrances. I have a Dendrobium Green Wonder, and it has a wonderful honey-like fragrance, then my kingianum, it should have a honey-like fragrance, too. But we had it in our bedroom and during the day it smelled like pee - really, I was happy to see the flowers drop in the end, even if it was a nice blooming. The most delicious fragrance, I've ever had on one of my orchids is a Noid Dendrobium Nobile. I was sent a keiki from one of my orchid friends, and today - one year later, it blooms with clusters of beautiful flowers, no fuss, no cool period and no dry season, it just blooms and the fragrance is mouthwatering delicious. I have the Encyclia fragrans, at least I hope, and it's spiking now with dozens of flowers. It's quite exciting to find out, if it's the right one. The spots on the leaves is something, a lot of Encyclia are prone to get. I think, it's a fungal infection, but if it doesn't get any worse, never mind. My cochleata was severely infected, but is now treated. My alata is not susceptible to any diseases, it's just blooming ;)

I love nobile fragrances too :D the spots on my encyclia are mites damage actually. But they stopped when mites were gone :)

I am crying from laugh, I purchased the same from Schwerter last autumn :D It was on discount for 3 Euro, and till now I hardly waited to bloom, but after you say it smells like horse poop, I just don't want it to bloom anymore :D The funny part is, that I am in love with its roots and the plant itself is gorgeous. So let's hope it will never bloom...

Oh no, I still don't know what I have. It wasn't in your video. Mine only flowered once when I got it from the store. It flowered like the D variety it has very long leaves that are thin and sort of look like grass. It has very large bulbs at the base. It hasn't flowered at all in 4 years. I had no idea it couldn't be in dirt. So I'll repot it tomorrow. Hopefully I can find out what it is and get it to flower again. The flowers were gorgeous when I first saw it. It had multiple flower spikes.

Hi Danny there are three kinda encyclia, prostechea, or anacheilum (this are the always changing names ) the chacoensis with two leaves, the fragrans, and the aemulum wich is exactly like fragrans but buds come out when the pseudobulb is not mature yet. I have bloom the aemulum, the flower open kinda greenish but turns white when the flower mature, fragrance for me is like jazmin and gardenias, also i have the chacoensis but i cannot make it bloom yet so.. will see. But i can tell you that the flowers looks the same in the those three types of orchids. sorry to hear you hate the smell because those flowers are long, long, long lasting. SALUDOS from Peru!
@MissOrchidGirl8 жыл бұрын
Oh dear indeed they seem to be long lasting :)) maybe the smell will change in the next few days :)) and yes as far as I understand from www.orchidspecies.com/anachacoense.htm it seems that 3 are very common species in the trade that get mixed up.

I got a rescue orchid at a recent Orchid Society meeting that was labeled "Epi Fragrance". It looks a lot like yours and the one flower that unexpectedly bloomed smells spicy/sweet and quite nice. The flower is less than 1" wide and seems to have a hinged lip. I guess it must be a chacoensis. Perhaps the scent will go bad after a while.
@felixcuche2 жыл бұрын
Wow, I have Prosthechea madrensis, their flowers are almost identical to chacaoensis, but pseudobulbs are with egg shape, little bit flattened. The flowers smell marvelous, but its difficult describe, is like... vainilla soap, maybe. I'm surprise that chacaoensis smells Bad. Greetings from Mexico.

I saw this video and recently got the book" the cattelyas and their relatives: the debatable epidendrums" which...well there are A LOT of species that appear like your orchid. However- there is an identification key, and I throught I'd give a crack at it and see if I can come up with any results. But I think I'll need additional info- size of the flower and segments in mm, the color of the lines (your desc. says purple but they look more brown on video, so a close look at this could be helpful. Is it more brown, red, purple...) the height of the pseudobulbs, length and width of leaves, if it blooms on immature or fully mature growths, color of the back sides of the flowers, and the number of flowers, length of inflo, number of pseudobulb sheaths, does it climb, distance of rhizome (long or creeping). Also, is the lip lobed on the sides (kind of looks that way on video)? The pseudobulbs on chacoensis in the book are very much more round and squat, more like alata, but still compressed. Oh yeah, and are they grooved or smooth?Is there any grayish tinge to the vegetative parts (glacous) Of course, it looks like a younger plant and size and number of flowers and pseudobulbs and even number of leaves can change (many unifoliate cattleyas are capable of growing 2 leaves, especially when younger, so it's not too far of a stretch to think encyclias may do the same.
@MissOrchidGirl8 жыл бұрын
Oh ok so: the veins are really purple not brown, psb are pretty high and not rounded, elongated rather and blooms on mature psb, short spikes, 2-3 blooms for me.. but it might do more, back petals is.. buttery greenish white, psb are smooth, no gray tinge, green but light, 2 leaves on each cane. As I know radiata has more than 2 and fragrans has only one. The chacoensis has only 2, according to orchidspecies.com Any ideas?
@pabloalvareztostado36548 жыл бұрын
Mmm... I have a Chacaoensis and it doesn't smell badly at all, also its pseudobulbs are a little more rounded but the flower is ptractically identical, the problem is they're very similar (p. trulla, p. chacaoensis, p. baculus, p. chondylobulbon, etc.) in any case, these are not considered Encyclias anymore but Prosthecheas. In the Encyclias you can move the lip and pull it down, while you can't do that on a Prosthechea

Taxonomy changes are a nightmare indeed! I don't know who is the "authority" on this matter but in any case if you check on the link you shared, they are considered synonyms but prosthechea is from 1997 while encyclia is from 1971. Perhaps we could agree on the following formula: e". chacaoensis AKA p. chacaoensis... :)

it is so sad to know it isn't the one you purchased, the one that it really smells it is the encyclia radiata, and it produces even more flowers and it is pretty pretty similar to that one (Encyclia chacoensis) I have a radiata in my collection and it blooms every year. It smells so good like honey or hyacinth I don't know how to described it.
@MissOrchidGirl8 жыл бұрын
oh.. wish I got the radiata instead of this one lol :) thanks for the tip!
@robkuijer92737 жыл бұрын
Ok so this is a year old. But on the pronunciation: chacoensis means from the region of Chaco in bolivia. Pronounce it the spanish way with the latin -ensis (meaning: originating from) as suffix. In general when you have two vowels next to each other in latin I would go pronounce it as two syllables. 9 out of 10 cases that would be the right way.

Oh no. :( It's a pity about the smell, because the blooms look so beautiful. I guess it wouldn't feel too strong if you have some space to hang it outdoors. I hope you can find the correct orchid. By the way, some people dislike the perfume of the encyclia fragrans too. I was told it smells like very strong honey, but kind of "artificial", concentrated, and that it reminded the person who told me this of some strong flavored medicine. But some people love it. People's sense of smell varies. I don't mean I think this is encyclia fragrans, because it really doesn't look like it. I mean it's possible you won't like the smell, but the only way to know is to find one. I wanted a Cycnodes Wine Delight, but didn't dare to buy one yet, and one reason being half the people I know who has smelled it said the smell was too strong and reminded them of cough syrup. The other half of the people says it smells like cherries and it's a wonderful smell. I have no idea how it would smell to my nose. I hope I could see one in bloom before I buy it.
@MissOrchidGirl8 жыл бұрын
I can testify that the wine delight does have a very medicinal smell to it, to me it smells like cherry vitamins, artificial and sharp but I personally love it :P I can see how it might not be for everyone since it's so strong and sharp though :P it's kinda fun to not know how you will feel the fragrance.. except when it smells like horse poop bhahaha

Hi Danny, I actually just got an orchid at an orchid show yesterday that looks very similar to your orchid in this video, except that the one I got smells wonderful! I came across your video when I was searching on its care. The orchid was labeled as Encyclia Radiata. I thought I would share so maybe you would not give up on this type orchid because the fragrance was actually what made me purchase it! The orchid I have has similar psuedobulbs as yours, and has either 2 or 3 leaves at the top,. The flower itself doesn't have a point on the bottom of the lip like yours does, and turns a bit inward instead. Also, some of the flowers have tiny red dots on the green petals as well. Here is a picture of that orchid from the show: goo.gl/photos/BTkGSqXV8i7ta6sq9 Here is a picture of the one I purchased (which of course is not quite as nice as the one in the show - the lip is not quite as white and flower has thinner petals and sepals): goo.gl/photos/ccgiKQDuLizEZCAo8 goo.gl/photos/P7hdwuXNoVQ4oN9J8 I'm actually surprised that two flowers can look so similar and smell so different!
