Thanks :) Very sweet of you to say...there isn't much more to say about media sterilization...you need a sterile environment which is almost impossible in a normal house/kitchen. Do you have a specific question maybe? You can always post your questions on the facebook page with the same name.

I would love to see an update to this, it's been 3 or 4 months since this video was published. I would also love to see you try your hand at growing vanilla from seed, but this time, talk through the steps: Because after watching your 3 videos I am curious why the germination is done the way you did it, why not just plant straight into moss? Why is sterilization so important for the seeds to germinate when in nature they are totally fine outside? And what was that you said about fungi and orchids....that orchids require high mycelium content, or is it a specific fungi they need? If I were to live in a forest area with high mycelium content could i simply plant orchid seeds out there and they would grow just fine? So many questions, I'd love to see more in-depth information on this topic. Recently I have been looking at the Korean Natural Farming videos, KNF for short, where you take a sample of the natural soil organisms in your area and culture them on rice, to be used as an additive to your soil not just for nutritional value but for the propagation of the soil organisms themselves. So I wonder if this could be used to grow orchids in less sterile environments and in more natural environments.

Hi John...Yes It's been a while since I started with this whole 'orchids from seeds' project but if you watched my latest video my life is quite busy at the moment and I didn't get around to making an update. Now in terms of fungi and stuff, I have answered this before in a lot of other comments but like you said I think I will make a video that contains all those answers in 1 spot so to say. To summarize for you here...Orchids seeds are hardly viable and have zero energy storage capabilities. Think of the difference between a bean and an orchid seed. So they require a specific fungus/fungi to survive. Think of the fungi as the nanny for the orchid seed. Now the extra complication is that we don't know which one or multiple fungi work best for the orchid seeds and of course a terrestrial orchid in Peru will have a different fungus nanny than an orchid growing in trees in Thailand. Plus the fungi also need to have their own growth requirements fulfilled so if you bypass the sterile part you need to take into consideration the requirements of the fungus/fungi so that they grow too, but maybe not too much. The sterility gets rid of the need for fungi and basically makes the baby (orchid seed) sit on the food directly (goo -black media) and feed itself. Now if you have a giant pile of food what happens...bad fungi take over and you can dump the whole thing because these fungi (what grows on your bread for example) is not conducive to orchid development. So in short, orchid seeds need a fungus nanny and we grow them sterile so we bypass the nanny. Hope that helps :)

@@Orchidomania great analogy! Thank you so much for the explanation. Fascinating info. I wonder how the research is coming along on which fungi pairs well with which orchids? While it's great that we can circumvent the nanny and force feed the orchids, I am curious how well the orchids would do with a nanny in addition to an abundance of high quality food (organic orchid care?).

I am very late to this party, but when would you predict that the medium needed to be changed? I am going to attempt flasking soon and have enjoyed these videos, thank you!
@Orchidomania3 жыл бұрын
You're welcome 😊 Glad you liked them 😊 There are some averages for timelines ...you can find them online, but I think the best way to tell is once the plants take over the medium and you can tell they are not really growing anymore. Or the roots when through the jelly medium ...you need to ensure they are on an excess of food at all times! You can also watch this for more background info if you'd like: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3OVnoyop7iGebc

Great video. I just received cattleya Rex seedlings like that small in agar no mold though. Just really small seedlings some had roots some didn’t. This was very helpful on care for them . I recently deflasked some cattleyas from Thailand, but I keep them in a sort of mini terrarium, I don't take too much care of them since the humidity is so high that I rarely water them. If I may ask, why did you decided to leave them outside? I know that they need an adaptation period in which you decrease slowly humidity after deflasking.
@Orchidomania5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for visiting 😊 Good question...well in this case I feel like the roots/leaves were big enough and as you can tell in the video they were already pretty dry because of the mold that invaded the containers. It was kind of a gut feeling based on my previous experience. If you look in the "breeding orchids" playlist you can what I mean by that. Have a good weekend 🌺🌻🌼
