It took me a little while to realize it but the reason so many people loathe Umbridge more than Voldemort is because a lot of us has had to deal with someone that radiates the same energy IRL. Conversely very few of us have had a pathetic edge-lord that peaked in high school trying to kill us from infancy.

Also, Voldemort is at least 100% truthful about being the villain. Umbridge is one of those fake-friendly, condescending, bigotted, hypocritical ultra-conservatives or religious fundamentalists we know from real life, people who utterly believe _they_ are the "righteous" ones and will stubbornly maintain that they have never done anything wrong and everyone else is "sinful" for daring to disagree. She is more of a monster than Voldemort. Voldemort only kills people. Umbridge kills the soul.

The problem is that's exactly the morality of the Harry Potter series. Harry and anyone he likes is portrayed as automatically good while anyone he doesn't like is bad. Instead of a mix of characters with different morals it's black and white good or evil. And Rowling's attempt to make Snape a morally grey ambiguous character failed, making him come off as a Lily obsessed incel who asked Voldemort to kill James and Harry so he could have her and only joined Dumbledore to avenge his obsession's death not to make up for being a Death Eater.

I like that she wasn't some hideous toad looking woman like they described in the books. It's like you expect someone who looks like Voldermort to be evil, but seeing him in his younger days as Tom Riddle it's hard to imagine he could be so evil. I’ve always felt like Sirius’ death lacked punch in the movies. I think part of it is because when he dies, though we see Daniel Radcliffe scream, it is silent. It’s a weird directorial choice that takes away the gut punch from that moment. And then the hardest part in the books for me is when Harry confronts Dumbledore and starts breaking stuff in his office, screaming that if this pain (the pain of grief) is what it means to be human, then he doesn’t want to be human. That scene in the movie is just… them having a quiet conversation.

I always thought on that line as Living vs existing/surviving. So, in my interpretation, Harry was not actually living during books 4-7. He was afraid, he was in danger of getting killed, people were getting killed around him and everyone was suffering through a immense amount of trauma. Only afterwards, with Voldemort dead, Harry could live his life and not just surviving in fear. Thus, the difference on the words living vs surviving. @@msjkramey To add to that, I always felt like Voldemort went after Harry not because he thought that he was more powerful than him ( that guy just thought that he was the best lol) but because Harry (and Neville too) were a beacon of hope to the Order. I'm pretty sure that it is mentioned that Vold. did not believe in prophecies too so, it would make more sense to go after the thing for which the Order was fighting: The future, which in this case is personified as Harry and Neville (the kids of two different pairs who both fought against him). Tho, I also believe that Harry was not special because people (ie. James and Lily) died for him and their love saved him but bcs he chose to keep fighting and avenge them. If Vold did not go after his parents, the Prophecies would not be fullfilied and so, by going after him, Vold actually put the prophecy in motion. Sorry for the long post. In the books, it's a stunner that hits him and he falls backwards into the veil. From Harry's point of view, time felt like it slowed down as he watched Sirius fall. They basically drew it put for drama.

Okay, but Alex you just glossed over Daniel’s scream that the editing team had to silence because it was too impactful. Yes, but it really didn’t hit as hard as it should’ve. The music is just kind of mid and the lack of development of Sirius and Harry’s relationship in the 4th and 5th movies makes the moment mid as well since the audience hadn’t seen a ton of screen time with those two. EXACTLY. The veil also isn't explained in the movie because they didn't have time, so him falling through it doesn't add anything- movie-only watchers will just be confused on why he's suddenly turning transparent and floating off, while the delayed reaction makes it looks like *the veil* killed him, and not the killing curse. Meanwhile the book was able to explore a little more fully Harry being in denial about Sirius being dead because of the veil, but without those scenes the veil serves no purpose in the movie. This was always the coolest movie when I watched as a kid. Harry taking on that leadership role. You get 2 great Villains with Umbridge showing the political side of the wizarding world. As well as the most development for Voldemort we’ve seen. Add on that amazing 3rd act with Dumbeldore finally showing his power. Bellatrix killing Sirius. Great movie.

Sirius never knew the Dursleys were abusive. That's why he hesitated to offer Harry a chance to live with him. Harry never told him, because he chose to keep Sirius safe over his own wellbeing. Because if he'd known, he would've raised hell trying to get Harry away from them. You know he would've.

Making Sirius more warm and fatherly towards Harry made his death much more effective(speaking from someone who read every book and saw all the films).
@clover2739

Yeah I’d say they book Sirius is more realistic based on his situation and trauma, but movie Sirius was definitely a lot more warm and father like. Like movie Sirius had a complete 180 switch from being seen as crazy after Azkaban when we find out he’s good, but there is less time movie wise to develop him.

In the movie, it looks like Dumbledore and Voldemort are at the same level. In the books, Dumbledore was just testing Voldemort to see if he was at his level. And he was not and Voldemort even knew it. And the reason why Dumbledore didn't kill or defeat Voldemort was because Harry had to do it. And that's why also Voldemort sent Draco to kill Dumbledore because he knew he couldn't. So, yeah. Dumbledore was very freaking powerful.

I've always wondered exactly how the horcruxes work? Total tangent but in theory splitting his soul up is the protection for ol' voldy, so if his current form is destroyed, and theoretically the bit of his soul within, then he'd have to replenish his soul from one of the horcruxes. So if Dumbledore had just killed him 8 times the whole thing could've been avoided. Quite frankly I think he easily could've killed him the 8 times, especially since voldy had to kind of recharge each time.

I noticed that the difference with Sirius’s death from the books to the movies, is that in the books he dies when Bellatrix hits him with the stunning spell, which knocks him into the vail, but in the movie she straight up hits him with Avada Kedavra. I don’t really have an issue with it, but idk I just noticed it.

Order of the Phoenix is my favorite book of the series because of it’s subtext about education. Wild how Umbridge’s whole “no progress for progress’s sake” talk and censoring of education fits right into the political discourse around education (in the U.S.) today.
@safferstihl5502

I so terribly disagree with how that’s representing todays discourse (I don’t think it’s the teachers position to push that progress on youth. Blah blah blah) but I also love the connection you made

@@safferstihl5502 Here's the thing (and this is coming from me, an ex-classroom teacher and current educator researcher) most teachers don't have the time to "push progress on students". Most teachers are still trying to help students navigate the academic fallout of covid and don't have much time to do anything controversial. The whole witch hunt over "wokeness" in education takes attention away from more pressing issues in education (like paying teachers a living wage, addressing teacher burnout, helping kids catch up after Covid, etc.).

@@starzzzy22Thank you! I have two long great friends who are younger teachers, you know how much it takes to just get simple things done with YOUNG children in a group setting? They just want 9-5 workers out of the school system and free labor from criminals. That's all. That's why there are more options available to those with money in private schools than there are for public schools. I'm 30 and it was very clear education was being dumbed down when my own mom questioned why I had no classes to learn to write and read script.

My question is why did The Ministry even care that Harry was casting magic in front of his muggle cousin who already knew that he was a wizard.
@clover2739
@clover2739 Жыл бұрын
They didn’t actually care, they just wanted to frame Harry and make him seem unhinged because he said that Voldemort was back. They wanted to discredit him, they were waiting for something like this to happen. I’m fact Umbridge was the one who sent the dementors in the first place.

Underaged magic. Cant use magic anywhere near muggles no matter what. Only until you are 18 you can do magic outside of school grounds... Until the next minister of magic that was imperious cursed...kinda just lifted all of that. Harry: "Im not allowed to use magic" Hagrid: "ah yes. But dudley doesn't know that".

Most of the way character deaths happen never sat right with me when reading the books. Sirius because it was super cliche like, "Oh no, Harry gonna reconnect with the closest person to his parents? He gonna have some ounce of family happiness? Can't have that!" It was also a pathetic death. Sirius shouldn't have been blindsided so easily unless it was deliberately sacrificing himself to save Harry. But no. JK suffered a recent loss and needed to show her readers that pain but with the worst articulation. Then there's Lupin and Tonks. Two other people I'd expect to put up a bigger fight. Like, what happened? You're never told how and the fact that they're married means that they would have been fighting side by side, like where were they? Who were they with? How did both get taken out and did they take anyone with them? It's not modern combat with guns, spells have to travel, you can block them, like just how? Magic combat to me has always been the weakest thing in the series.

magic wasnt made for combat, it was made as a tool. youre basically saying that a hammer is a poor murder weapon, thats because it wasnt designed for murdering, it just so happens that you can use the concussive force to inflict lethal damage to anyone. magic? just a hammer
