Congratulations on your marriage! I am forever grateful for finding your channel 🙏 my 28 yr old brother had a stroke caused by blood clots that took out all but 1 1/2 ft of his illeum. He now has to live with and stoma. I have been focusing on care for his stoma and he is finally being discharged soon🤗 . It has been a struggle trying to find the right system for him. I am taking all of this in and thankful I can add your information and perspective to my search. I also share videos I come across with him as well 💙💙💙💙

I started out with Hollister. I used them for years. I am now with ConvaTec. I use the 2 piece with the drainable pouch. I used to use the closed end pouch but I have a parastomal hernia and there was more pressure on the hernia as you change the closed end several times during the day. So with the drainable, I just empty it...no pressure. I have had my colostomy for 30 years now due to Chrohn’s disease. I haven’t had many issues to deal with. It’s been a pretty smooth process. I have appreciated my Stoma from day 1. I haven’t needed much help from Doctors or nurses in that area. I do have a gastroenterologist that I mainly see when time for colonoscopy which is every two years. Maggie, I really like your idea of educating nurses about the topic of ostomy care. Where I live there are few if any who have any knowledge of this. Like you said there are organizations that people can contact. At age 71, I have picked up some great tips from you Maggie. Keep up the good work! And again, Congratulations to you and Zac!

I'm not an ostomy patient, but I also haven't finished being dx'd with my GI yet, so I still have a ways to go before I actually know what my outcome will be. . I always watch your educational vids because, I learn from you, and I just don't know what my future holds in store. I think it's good to be prepared when you have severe GI issues.

I remember when I had my last surgery in 2016 one of the nurses struggling to get the bag attached to the flange. I just took over because I could sense her getting a big flustered and because of the abdominal pain it was actually a lot easier for me to do myself. You know what it feels like when someone is pressing on your just sewn up or stapled abdomen.....OUCH! I think this was a very informative video for nurses as well as ostomates.

Thank you so much Maggie for this very informative video. I am a fairly new patient with an ileostomy... 8 months.. I have gotten most of my help from your videos. They are very very informative and have helped to give me confidence in living with an ostomy as well as caring for it. Always appreciate any information that helps as this is truly a new way of life. Thank you again👍 Once again Congratulations to you and Zak!! You are a beautiful couple both inside and out❤️❤️ Happy 11 year Anniversary with your ostomy 😊

As a former warehouse worker who spent about 4 years in a medical supply warehouse, I can say for sure that yes, ostomy care and supplies is an EXTENSIVE field of products! There’s just so many different sizes and models both with two piece and one piece systems, and several different brands: Coloplast, DanSac, Hollister, Convatec just being some of them, then there’s also Salt and more (and that was just what my old job had, and we didn’t have everything on the market) plus all the supplies that goes around the actual stoma and stoma care... Pastes, creams, those moldable rings and other aids to get a good seal, and extra tapes, pouches and sprays and drops to remove smell and/or thicken the output in the bag and I’ve probably forgotten half of it lol In my defense, it’s over 9 years since I had to quit working because of the effects of my genetic connective tissue disorder. But yeah, ostomy care products was one of the biggest things sent out at work, that and diabetes care when it came to civilian customers, then there was also a lot of wound care and incontinence and compression stockings and just general clinic and surgery and hospital care equipment. It was a jungle with thousands of different products (out of which most likely hundreds were ostomy related or used by ostomy patients so they had the 03 in the beginning of the number as all ostomy products did at work, even Cavlion had 03 even though it’s used for so much more than ostomy care) in a relatively large warehouse but I truly loved that job and had a lot of fun at work most days and I was really sad when I could no longer work and was laid off on medical grounds. My mind is still at work at times and I often think of my former colleagues, especially now through this pandemic! I worked there during the swine flu pandemic and that was peanuts compared to what we’re dealing with in the world today. Oh, we also had a little department at the warehouse where things were made in house or customized in house, so if a customer with an ostomy had a difficult shaped stoma or just general difficulties cutting the hole themselves, that customization department had those customers shapes and sizes in a folder so us warehouse workers would bring the correct type of flanges or one piece bags up to the customization department and the ladies up there would cut the holes according to the customers stencil, and then we’d pick up the customized items later in the day or the next day and send it out to the customer with the product being ready to use without the customer having to do anything to the fit of their flange or one piece bag before being able to apply it to their body. It is a pretty popular service to have the flanges or bags customized at that department and I’m so glad the service exists. I’d probably need to use a service like that myself if I had been an ostomy patient as I have issues with pain in my hands and struggle with using scissors because of my EDS. And yes, I was considering becoming a nurse a couple of years before starting on that warehouse job, and I was wanting to specialize in diabetes care. Needless to say, I nerded out pretty good at that job as I took the time to learn more about many items and its use, and friends with diabetes could often get some hot news about new things from me lol Now me almost going for a diabetes educator degree is still helping friends some as I still try to keep up to date and read a lot, and I can give suggestions friends can bring up with their doctor both when it comes to diabetes gadgets and for wound care or stoma care etc. Once a nerd, always a nerd, even when being a disabled nerd 😂

First off....congratulations on your marriage! So very happy for you. Now for my actual question, a few months ago I started using an actual adhesive with my coloplast supplies. I can usually go at least 7 days without any leaks, I feel like this is a miracle. My question is why are adhesives never discussed in any of the ostomy channels? It works so well, it’s like a thick liquid paste, and really works well????

Crazy in UK we use mm as the measurement for stoma. I use coloplast and know I use a 60mm coupling so just look for my bag then select the 60mm coupling. Also with measure atoms it's 33mm as widest, an oval. Makes it so much easier to access the right coloplast items x

2pc are not as popular in the uk. I have used one since beginning and more so now as I use the coloplast concave 2pc. Love 2pc so much better than one piece for getting a secure for around stoma with good seal x
@melaniepoulton67384 жыл бұрын
I use the 2pc Sensura Mio flex bag from Coloplast. the nice thing is that you can change the bag because it is stuck with a double seal onto the flange. So the flange/appliance stays on your stoma, you peel off the bag, clean the flange and attach another bag and your good to go.
@anikabaddeleyrollingbackwa73414 жыл бұрын
The one-piece system is much more common here in the UK I am just trying a pelican bag at the moment. They are high output and I am liking it so far.

I was given the red size of Coloplast in the hospital from the SWAT team. When I went to see a nurse at the VON she gave me a larger size. I am now wearing the yellow size of Coloplast. I have a dip at the bottom of my stoma and have to change my bag every four days due to leakage. I under stand the skin issue with the larger flange-my skin is always red, and sore. However I'm trying to find a solution while also keeping my sanity and not having to worry about leaks everyday. So my question is: do you experience less leakage with a smaller size flange or about the same? I have a colostomy and sometimes the output can be thicker which can push the flange off. Ostomy care is an art-it's a BEAST for sure
@gbk1t4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Sometimes a smaller flange is better for thick output because it reduces the “ pancaking” . Also an Eakin seal would help even out the dip under your stoma. Hope this helps.

Gosh, I envy you. My stoma (actually more like an open stomach) is slightly bigger than 4 inches! All I can get is post op base plates and see-through bags. Unfortunately that’s not ever going to change. I also need a skin barrier plate (8 inches on all sides) underneath to get the whole thing leak-free for a single day. I’m also very slim and am so tired of the whole thing. My ex-surgeon probably still thinks he did a great job.

What I hate is inpatient on the computer ordering from central supply nothing is listed with any of these things. They will have small medium and large. One hospital medium actually is the convex bags. It's a mess. Right now the ConvaTec V2s are working best. My kiddo has had an ostomy for about 18 months. We've had a heck of a time until one wound ostomy nurse was like oh she needs convex. IDK why but the combination of ostomy placement, her midline incision and avoiding her G tube that's what prevents leaks. We started on less convexity and now need more.
@violetsanders36844 жыл бұрын
I have had the best success with Coloplast...I HATE the bags that Hollister and Convatec use. They just get so gross so fast. I burn through them super quickly. I have to occasionally switch between systems though because my skin will get annoyed when I use the same one too much. I wish Coloplast made a lighter convex in a two piece system. The one piece just doesn’t work for me and the two piece is too deep. Ahh. Wish there was a more customizable option out there!

I have a question about the disposal of the 2 part bags, I have used the bags that are sent in the box of bags. there are not enough. I have gone to using baby diaper bags and doubling them to keep the smell down. and I have used doggie doo bags again doubling them. what else could one use? Daily trash disposal is a must , I just do not always have time to take them to the trash bin with each change.

For the first time I’ve had a rash around my stoma I have tried a new O flanges and it calls me to break out what do I put on it to heal I am going back to Hollister
@cynthiaakacyndsmith65394 жыл бұрын
when I have had rash issues, I have what is called crusting, and a paste to help hang on to the flange. it really is trial and error, however, it can be fixed. check with your supplier as well.
@alyssarush56454 жыл бұрын
I used stoma powder (which Hollister makes) on my skin after I cleaned it and then patted the skin prep wipes on top of the powder. The powder always worked best for me. But like Cynthia said, it’s trial and error whether powder or paste works better for you and how much of either you’d need. But it can (and does) heal
@hamsterSNAKE4 жыл бұрын
This is what I do. Wipe off stoma with baby wipe. I use hollister's adapt stoma powder (7902) around my stoma and red skin...dust lightly around your stoma. Then I use the skin prep wipes and wipe around my stoma making a quick drying layer onto of the stoma powder...I usually use 2 wipes here as you don't want any white crumble pieces on your skin when you wipe as this can cause your flange not to stick correctly once applied. So use enough wipes for this....wipe everywhere around your stoma up to where your flange layes on your skin. I then roll a clump of toilet paper around the outside of my stoma to get any extra moisture away....I will even blow down on it and fan my hands at it. (You wanna have a dry layer here) Then I use hollister's adapt paste (79300) around the hole I cut into my flange.... -side note- make sure you are getting the closest to exact fit around your stoma. You want that flange to be right up to where your stoma sticks out. I squeeze out the first bit of paste onto the plastic backing of my flange just to get rid of the crusty end (this does make a difference) Then I apply an even layer around the cut in my flange, make sure its as connected at the end to make a seal. Then I will apply my flange that has the paste around my stoma....I will then twist it a little once I feel the paste stick and I will twist and pull down. I will lay my flange down I will use my finger tips on the inside of my flange. I use the hollister new image flexwear flanges as they have extra plastic around the stoma to be able to press down right beside your stoma to get a better fit right where the past would be underneath. With a better fit around your stoma and with the paste helping to prevent your output from getting on your skin causing irritation and redness around your stoma the stoma powder will help with crusting up any raw skin or redness. Hope this help. The finer details made a difference for me after alot of trial and error. I also use the adapt barrier extenders (79402) layer half on my flange sticker and half on my skin to secure my flange better
