I'll be 80 this year. After dealing with my mother's home when she passed I swore I wouldn't inflict the same on my children. Mom was a typical American consumer who acquired way more stuff than was necessary. (How many pairs of shoes with matching handbags does one woman need!?!) Not only have I done my kids a favor, but I've also made my own life easier by eliminating anything that wasn't useful or meaningful.

Quoting Cass here: “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth half-asking!” A-MEN, sister. Here I am half-assing along with you. Is my house spotless, tidy, and mother-in-law inspection ready? Nope. This was very encouraging! I'm struggling with several chronic health conditions, so on some days, just doing the basics is a challenge. I realized I've been beating myself up for the times I don't make it to doing 'above and beyond'', but I feel like I can breathe now and dare I say even feel proud that the basics are done every day even if I feel lousy? On my better days, I have been thinking of all these deep cleaning projects instead of breaking it down into doable steps, and yup, perfectionism paralysis is very real! Thanks, Cas!

Yes, I am an “all or nothing” person. Perfectionist. I have been working on myself for years. When I go to clean a room, I want to it too top to bottom. I have made myself just do the perimeter and surfaces around stuff. Once I got all the rooms decluttered and in order, I have no problem keeping it that way now. But it used to be messy everywhere. I used to start over writing a post it note at work if I made a mistake. Now I just scratch through the mistake and keep writing. That was very hard to do but now it is easy. Decluttering my house was key so I thank you CAS because you are the one who started me on that journey. ❤

I don’t have problem with tea towels because. I hang them on hooks by the loop/label that’s usually on them. If not, I snap a cafe curtain ring on them and hang them on the hooks with the others. They live on my door to garage, which isn’t too far to manage. Now, I DO have a messy linen closet problem. I am a butterfly 🦋 so I took the door off it long ago and have a curtain tied back instead. I am now trying to half neatly stuff the bottom sheet in a pillow case so it is all together…and so they don’t fall off the shelves. I don’t even use top sheets so those are folded on top shelf and available to use as curtains, tablecloths, etc. Thanks for the “don’t fold them anymore” hint. 👍👍

This hit home. This was me. But I stopped and thought things out. 1. Why clean things I'm not keeping, why organize things I'm not keeping, is what I ask myself. So I decluttered each room then I organize each room then I clean each room. I am still in process of decluttering rooms and places but this is so much easier. I had to change my mind set to simpler tasks to get done. AND the weight and stress it takes away when done is a lot. I never realized that clutter stress caused relationship issues. Relationships are getting better in our house as stuff leaves in boxes and bags. Thanks Cass.

Yeah I’m 45 and just recently it dawned on me why something that takes other people 30 minutes, takes me at least triple the time on most tasks. Super detail oriented and perfectionistic. How ironic my house is a mess most of the time 😅 I tried setting timers and forcing myself to literally “keep moving”. Not kneel down zeroing in on that patch or spot and the next and the one next to that.. And OH I missed a spot, let me go back, oh it doesn’t come off.. Now what? Type-X? Egrmm IT HAS TO COME OFF.. (… 12 hours later…) the house is still a mess but that one corner is absolutely blinding! 🌟😎🌟

Cass I just want to let you know that you and Dawn literally changed my life! I started watching your guy's videos about 5 years ago. Did not take action for months, but got really excited. I was literally like that women's kitchen you did, who's house looked great. My house is 4000 sq ft and EVERY closet, drawer, cupboard, under beds .. was jam packed with garbage, junk, nothing had a home...... We have a s cond garage that was floor to ceiling and you had to climb mountains to get to anything! I have spent 4 years, got rid of about 50-60 percent of all of our belongings. I have a confession to make though: My ADHD brain just can't get my house beautifully organized, so I have hired an organizer to work with me for 30 hours,! Don't judge me!

Thank you, Cas, for this post. I needed to hear that. I spent all of 2022 recovering from near death. Most of 2023 overcompensating for 2022 until I got sick again. I am on the OCD side of perfectionism. My mother believed being in 2nd place was no more than the first loser. I have been striving for perfection ever since. Yet, everything I've ever learned has come to me from a mistake I've made. As 2024 rolled in I gave up. Tomorrow, in 15-minute intervals, I am taking the garbage bag around the house and tossing stuff. I've had a memory bin for years that will be coming with me. Please keep this kind of content coming--you are a great cheerleader!

7:40 that's a great practice, putting your toaster on a bin so the crumbs don't go everywhere when you move it. And you don't have to clean the cabinet shelf either. And the bin contains the cord and plug too! Brilliant! (Only my toaster oven will still live on the counter. The coffee maker lives in the cabinet on a tray to catch any drips.) 💖🌞🌵😷

@@DougAshley , thank you. Because the bin is plastic, I wouldn't use the toaster to toast bread in the bin as it might melt the plastic. Also, if I remember correctly, the bin just barely fit in the cabinet. 💖🌞🌵😷

You sound like me! I have 4 kids ages 15-9, and a 7 month old. I always thought my house was a mess because I had small children. But even when they were fairly independent, I still struggled! Now, I have started over with an infant and I m lucky if I can put him down for 10-15 minutes and try to get some cleaning done. I wear him I a carrier some, but he is 20 pounds and it hurts my old back, lol. I don’t know if I will ever really get things under control.

It is now obviously clear that because I can't do everything as I want, I just leave it, especially with my ADHD. I'm a perfectionist that is the daughter of an ultra perfectionist. When my dad does house remodeling he takes forever because he is such a perfectionist about things that no one sees. We got to where when he would notice a tiny imperfect before he would try to make it perfect we would say "no no we like it that way! It adds character!"
