Just FYI: this is not twerking or hula, for that matter. It's Tahitian. It looks nothing like twerking although there are some African dances that mimic the fast moving hip motion. Tahitian is a Polynesian dance but it is distinctly different from hula.....
@MaluluKeleGuiSila7 жыл бұрын
Usually the Hawaiians know it not hula. But they're using "hula" as a marketing term because tourist recognise more with hula than with Tahitian or Ura. In Hawaii its called Hula and in Tahiti it's called Ura pronounced "'Oodah" with a Goliath stop before it's pronounced.

Luke McCalister I have lived in Hawaii for 20 years and have been part of a halau for 16 of those years. I do understand that many people umfamiliar with the diversity of Polynesia tend to group things under a catch-all phrase. Thus, any dance by any group from Polynesia that involves fast moving hips becomes hula, just as any group of people from Polynesia are often mistaken for Hawaiian. I appreciate the linguistic lesson.... even though I have been learning Hula all these years, language is still the most challenging and yet, most beautiful part of the dance.....

Well, I'm sure they would start you off slow...and from the very basics. :) How fast you get to this point is another story. Age, health...etc... Just odd they would be doing Tahitian Hula in Hawaii...just to make the tourists happy I guess as that's what they come to see. Some remember the fast swinging hips seen here is Tahitian Hula...the slow is Hawaiian...as I mentioned already...wonder how many tourist remember which was which after returning home. weeks or months later. :)

I've been learning belly dance on and off for a year. I would say I'm in a intermediate level. Then I tried this hula. Bruh, I have never felt so betrayed by my own self-esteem. This needs a lot of energy. I'm running out of breath very easily and I can't smile. I think I need to practice circular breathing while dancing so that I can smile, breath and looking graceful at the same time. I think people need to try it at least once so they'll have higher appreciation for the hula.

The movement in polynesian dancing tells a story. The dance steps have been handed down through the ages. However, belly dancing you make up your own dance. The music is different too. I did both when I was young.
