Ms. Leolani, wow, thank you for your true compassion, caring for us strangers to share your talents with the World. I have always love and will continue to admire Tahitian, Hawaiian and Polynesian dances. It’s amazing how the legs move the hips like that. You’re never to old to learn, and I’m 53.

Amen to that!! It’s 2023, I’m 48, and sheer curiosity got to me, as I watched Polynesian dancers flipping their grass skirts. It’s such a beautiful dance with so much meaning, and passion. I want to learn!!

I have wanted to learn the Tamure since I was a little girl. In my 20s I took 1 class, at a Tahitian lady's home in Los Angeles. My schedule did not permit me to return. This the 1st step. It makes me wonder how islands all learnd the same dance and who started it? Would be fascinating to find out. I also find the African dances so beautiful but I don't know the name for them, I'm sure there are many from different nations. It always saddens me when old (and new) Hollywood TV shows try to pass the o tea Tahiti ("Tamure") as Hawaiian Hula when it is not. They have their own dance, which is beautiful too, but completely different (arms & hands tell a story), their hips barely sway and no drums but the beautiful ukulele plays the undulating sounds. Of course, I am not a fan of "fusion" because this dilutes both dances and traditions should be respected, the same that we respect the ancestors of both islands. (Although Tahitians are said to have been the ones who discovered Hawaii and migrated there, though I am not sure how accurate that is. I love both cultures, I am really in love with both yet I adore Tahiti the best.

It is great that you know some Hawaiian words, however Tahitian is spoken in Tahiti.. Completely different cultures and languages in spite of what Hollywood would have us believe. Thus, the word that is polite to say to a Tahitian to express gratitude is actually mauruuru (thanks).

a great teacher, I used to bellydance, purchased a Tahitian video but, that teaching pair jump right into the step without discussing position, maybe made for bellydancers who might notice the position is similar... but, might not work for a beginner... Leolani does a wonder job of showing all the important aspects, will look for the rest of the steps... the subscription, is there a preview that can be seen of the various features?
