My personal rule when buying components with memory chips is to only buy brands that also manufactures memory chips since they have the longevity experience. They are the following brands: Sandisk, Transcend, Samsung, Micron/Crucial, Teamgroup and Kingston. WD and Seagate are also ok since they have been in the storage market for very long.
@johndelabretonne23734 күн бұрын
This is a fairly good rule to follow, although (at least as far as I'm aware) both Crucial and Samsung have swapped cache sizes or swapped controllers without changing the Model# in the past; IMO, this is a disgusting practice that I've personally been a victim of, and I will no longer trust these companies in the future...
@blahorgaslisk77634 күн бұрын
@@johndelabretonne2373 This parts swap is something that Kingstone also did way back when SATA SSD's were the thing. Don't know if they have done this with the M.2 drives. Another thing to look for is the TBW rating. A high TerraBytes Written rating mean the drives should be more durable. And at least to me that is pretty important. I might not have the most write intensive software but it's onw less thing you have to wonder about. Currently I think the Kingstone Fury Renegade is pretty nice, with a TBW of 2000 for the 2TB version and a TBW of 4000 for the 4GB version. They are also pretty well priced, though they are not the fastest drives out there.

Your video has convinced me that Oricco is not a company I want to be purchasing SSDs from. If a company wants to use a different controller in their SSD, then they should create a new Model#/SKU for that item. We need to stop rewarding companies for very bad behaviors like this... There are companies out there that don't secretly swap controllers and have reasonable prices.

My game box has the WD Black drive, nice to know it's a great drive. Happy New Year.
@lindsaybruce13964 күн бұрын
A lot of this is going to depend on your use case. Ingesting footage is very different from being a boot drive, as is active project storage, NAS caching, and medium term storage. Hard drives also have different use cases, so this concept should be familiar to experienced PC users. Buying the same drive for all these use cases would be... sub-optimal. Best to learn what to look for, and then you can optimise for how you intend to use the drive and save yourself some cash. This is particularly true when considering data transfer speeds of PCIe gen 3, 4 and 5 drives.

What do you actually determine if an ssd has dram or hmb? This information isn’t shown on all SSD’s. This drive shows HMB and SLC cache. The SN850x doesn’t show having either.

Hi. Great video! Always buy reputable nvme drive brands with dedicated dram cache. The nvme drives without dram can be used as secondary storage drives not as primary OS drives. Cheers!

I stay away from SSDs that doesn't have any kind of DRAM on them, and relying on OS-dependent HMB can be flaky and has recent reports of Windows crashing due to bugged HMB implementation. DRAM-less SSDs store their data map on NAND dies, causing general performance issues as random reads and writes are heavily penalised. They also cause more wear on the NAND dies which in turn die sooner.

@DavidGoben22 сағат бұрын
One thing I also pay attention to is the manufacturer's "K" size assumption. For example, of the WD_Black SN850's I have, they all calculate 1K as 1000 bytes, not as the "official" 1024. Thus, 1MB is calculated as 1000x1000 instead of 1024x1024, 1GB is calculated as 1000MB and 1TB as 1000GB. What this boils down to is all my SN850's are each 99,511,627,776 bytes (92.7GB) shorter than an official 1TB drive, like the drive that usually comes pre-installed on a stock PC. Still, this should still not present any significant usage issues, except when we are trying to clone a fast and easy mirror backup. Suddenly we discover that we also need to rejigger the partitions on a boot drive, for example, which typically has 3 partitions assigned (EFI System, Recovery and Basic Data), to actually be successful (fortunately, the 260MB normally assigned to the EFI System Partition can usually be safely trimmed down to 99MB, or whatever the disk cloning software's actual content measurements permit). Of course, this variance in actual physical memory capacity can also affect benchmark test results.
