In 1969, I was a child of 5-6 years old. My father - R.I.P., was a Customs Enforcement Officer at the Gürbulak border gate. But we were living in the city of Erzurum with my mother and my family, and we used to go from Erzurum to the Turkey-Iran border gate to visit my father every few months. That Tahir pass scared even 5.5 year old me, especially in winter. It was not a road but a kind of goat path. Your video is an indication of how much Turkey has changed in 50 years.

My Grandfather used to drive from BG to Irak with the same Volvo. All the harsh conditions and the uncertainty on the road made the truck drivers by the time one of the best! Heat, lack of service areas all on your own, and don't forget the risk of ambush and robbery! Respect! Great retrospection to the reality. Imagine changing a tire with 24 tonnes fully loaded truck under the heat in the middle of nowhere. Very touching story for the one who has memories and not only. Thanks!

I worked for a company called mates international in Avonmouth, UK back in the 2000s and the owner, Les Mates used to tell me about his trips down to the Middle East in the 70s and 80s. He’s said they were lovely friendly people and you would never feel unsafe apart in a few areas on the way down where you just wouldn’t stop. Amazing drivers back then who really worked for a living.
@hubertwicki9405 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your report. Of course, even then there were many exaggerated stories about bandits and raids on the Orient Route. Of course it was better to form a convoy on certain routes. But the most trouble came when you were involved in an accident that resulted in injuries or death. This often ended for the trucker, complicit or not, in jail. I can still remember how my brother once took an English trucker to Switzerland in the 1970s who had previously been in prison after a fatal accident in Turkey.
@PillSharks Жыл бұрын
@@hubertwicki9405 funny you should make the comment about a road death.. I was involved in a fatal accident in Paris in the 2000s whist driving a wagon and the French Police held me for nearly 3 days… they gave me legal aid and the company was told they would have to bail me which wasn’t a small amount from memory… I was told that I might get held until it goes to a court house which could take weeks and if found guilty then I would probably have some prison time which would more than likely start in a French prison before being allowed back to the UK. The whole thing was a bloody nightmare so I can only imagine how it would have felt all that way from home! Thankfully 6 witnesses came forward who said there wasn’t a chance the English truck driver could see the poor lady who walked in front the tractor unit as I pulled away… I had a 3 month old baby boy at home and seeing him and my wife on return was the best thing ever!

A great video! As a young teenager in 1969 I had a book which contained my favourite feature: 'The Overlanders' - a company called 'Asian Transport Limited', running from the UK to Tehran - the story was so exciting I would read it often and imagine being in the cab on the intrepid journey! Some years later I was fascinated by the 'Top Deck' company with it's converted 1960's double deck buses carrying passengers to Kathmandu......I wonder if you ever came across 'Asian Transport' or 'Top Deck' on your travels? I noticed that legendary Swiss manufacturer Saurer in one shot - was there a photo of a Berna too? Always liked their cab design. Many thanks!

Thank you for your interest in my little youtube video. For a few days, on the route from the Tahir Pass to Teheran, our small convoy was also joined by an English trucker. You can see the Scania in the photo "4000 Kilometers away from home" on the far left. I can still remember the Pakistani and Afghan trucks well, with all their lovely decorations. At night, the drivers slept under their vehicles because these trucks had no bunks.

Oh yes, it was a trip I will remember for the rest of my life! It is almost unbelievable that there were truckers who drove this route for years.

@@hubertwicki9405 how many times did you make the journey?
@hubertwicki94052 жыл бұрын
It was a "once in a lifetime" journey, on which i was allowed to accompany my brother on this route. My brother went to the Orient for almost 10 years: to Iran, Iraq, Syria, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

@hubertwicki9405 Жыл бұрын
Vielen Dank !

@@hubertwicki9405 its simple. Your phyotos are fantastic and a lot like me wish they had tried it in the Golden days of trucking. I have been so furtunate to have been driving truck from 1988 i most of West Europe starting in a Volvo F89 but never to the east. Gretings from Denmark.
