OPEN THE KZbin ENGLISH SUBTITLES. I heard a lot of language advice on KZbin that I disagree with. With language learning less is more. The more you focus on one language, the deeper you can understand it. There is a lot of hype about “SPEAKING”, but language learning isn’t all speaking. Remember, the real difficulty to Chinese and Japanese is reading and writing and it is totally overlooked on KZbin. Writing essays by hand in Chinese and Japanese was the hardest thing I ever had to do. -Anming

Oriental Pearl I think people are enthralled by any activity that seems like it requires superhuman ability. Not only polyglots but street musicians, skateboarders, parkour, breakdancers, et al. We know intellectually that those performers got so good through many hours of study. But, they make it look so easy that it appears that they were born with those abilities. That is most everyone’s superhero fantasy. Power bestowed without personal effort.

With the difficulty in formal language as well all Chinese/Japanese characters, it is necessary to have formal training to become proficient on a professional level. Business level Chinese and Japanese, especially for academic essays and business emails, is unreachable with self study as a native English speaker. The advice here is not for people learning these two languages for fun, but rather for their career. I only know HSK and JLPT, which are required for university entry in China and Japan. Even top scores on those tests are not enough to be fully prepared for the Chinese and Japanese academic/business world. I learned a lot more still after passing those tests many years ago.
@facepalmnetwork2554 жыл бұрын
I've been self learning Japanese now for 1 year and 2 months now. While its kinda sad that she said that you will need to seek some sort of formal education, she has a point. I plan on taking a Japanese college course later on in life as well as going for the JLPT N3 exam at the end of this year. Honestly, there are times where i don't have the intrinsic motivation to do it. Having the extrinsic motivation of a teacher or deadlines to help push you are really nice even though they may seem like hell. Piece of advice to anyone learning Japanese, kanji is unavoidable, no matter what anyone else says. Without kanji, Japanese is just a blob of sounds on paper. Please drill the basics in your head because they will really save you when you have a difficult time. When it comes to conversation, you don’t have the luxury of typing it out, rereading it, making corrections and remembering a grammar rule. Everything has to come out whether its right or wrong. And don't worry if its wrong, you WILL make mistakes, they are a しないといけません. Just set little goals for your self and don't think of this huge language because it will intimidate you as it did me. Don't cram hiragana in the beginning if this is your first foreign language you are learning, do a 5-15 a week and just read stuff in romaji before that. Your vocabulary base in the beginning doesn't really need kanji because they are very distinct words. And keep at it even though it will seem like such a pain. You will ask yourself "why tf am i learning this?"(I assume you are self studying at this point.) and continuing will seem like an endless battle so here is my best piece of advice. Make yourself a system, it doesn't have to be a strict "study 6 hours everyday" system but make sure you do something everyday. By something, I mean something productive like watching an anime with Japanese subtitles or making a vocabulary deck on anki and doing it, you will build something that seems like a normal everyday thing and then just expand from there. As a lazy bum that never studies in school for tests and just did my best in class, this was a nightmare at first. Just remember, you are you, even though there are soooo many people out there that are better than you, you have your own life and they have theirs. You can do it. この句を読んでくれて感謝しています。全部の常用漢字を読めるようになるために僕はがんばらければなりません。諦めないで!

Chinese and Japanese is not an easy language to learn. Pronunciations are hard. But, you speak so well. It's a skill to be proud of. In addition to that, language is also culture! When you show an interest in their language, you are showing interest towards their culture. Many countries have to learn English, but not the other way around. So being able to communicate with the natives in their language is a blessing. It makes natives happy because people are also putting effort to speak in their language and culture! Its a very considerate and most kindest factor. Like there is an appreciation on a communication level. To be honest, I think you are also so fun and kind. The kind of friend I want.

Everyone's panicking and buying toilet roles while Anming is flexing on the trolls by speaking fluent Chinese and Japanese in a video to pass the time :D. In all seriousness though, even though I speak absolutely no Mandarin, I have been learning Japanese for 6 years and I'm at a high intermediate level. I think that your Japanese is actually really good! I hope you do more videos like this or videos where you speak to Japanese people in Japanese. The ONLY thing I noticed that could be improved on was your American accent still showed a little bit when you were speaking, but that was just minor because it was small and Japanese speakers, including myself, can understand you. I'm sure that you'll be able to get used to pronouncing Japanese 100% accurately like a Japanese speakers eventually. I'll admit I've only recently started getting better at my Japanese accent and speaking Japanese at a normal pace because I've been practising it more with friends and speaking to myself in Japanese. You're doing great, so again please ignore trolls who are clearly just bitter and jealous. I've come across some pretty dumb trolls like that myself. Also you're one of the first small channels I'm subscribed to and genuinely excited to see grow.

Man, at the beginning of my language journey those YT polyglots with their 10 languages really intimidated me, until I realised that they speak their languages only at an A1-A2 level. Crazy how knowing four languages to a high degree still made me feel like I was lagging behind. -.- Most language learners online only seem to flex their speaking abilities (that usually just revolve around very basic daily topics), they probably cannot even read news articles in Chinese, let alone books. While girls like us soon have master’s degrees from programmes taught entirely in Mandarin. 😎 keep that quality content coming! 🤗

Hi Anming, I love your videos because you are spontaneous, genuine and smart. Most people don't understand how difficult it is to reach a high level like yours in two languages so distant from your native language. For school reasons I had to reach a intermediate-high level of Korean language and it was very difficult despite living in Korea for two years and studying six hours a day between school and individual study. I had already studied Latin and French for five years but the Indo-European languages are much easier to study since I am a native Italian speaker. I admire your efforts and I am amazed at your incredible results. Please continue making videos here on youtube. Keep it up! Greetings from Florence, Italy.

Hi! Just found your content, since I've been on a massive foreigner travel blog binge on YT and the algorithm gods decided to bless me with your videos. Your Chinese is much less accented than the other videos, and I can definitely tell you put in the hard hours. You're also a lot more genuine and cheesy (I like cheesy!) than some other KZbinrs that I won't name. If you want some charismatic Bald-esque content give Adventures in Asia a try, I just found him yesterday and he's friendly, has not many views, and is a great reader/speaker of Japanese, he also has a great editor! The only thing missing from his vids are regular uploads. I'll be watching more of you! Keep doing what you're doing!

Oriental Pearl Thanks for the reply! I know many Koreans that also speak Japanese very well and they can learn the language very fast as Japanese Grammar and Korean grammar are extremely similar and direct translations (word for word) are possible most of the time. There is also a massively shared vocabulary between Japanese, Korean and Chinese and like you would be able to get to a high level in less than two years imo.

Actually, I am using Chinese Class 101 Dot Com, and I really enjoy it. I had no idea what to expect, and I was pleasantly surprised. I’ve been unsatisfied with my listening ability and my grammar, and these lessons are really helping. @benttranberg26904 жыл бұрын
The first of your videos that I listened to, was about people being surprised when you started talking one language they didn't expect you to know, and then another. There are several polyglots posting such videos on KZbin. It is so funny to watch the reactions - the "wow" moments. Actually it's more than just funny. There's must be some mechanism, that I bet psychologists know all about, that makes us able to enjoy surprises again and again through our fellow human beings. It evokes much the same emotions as if we ourselves go through the experience for the first time - even if we never actually did! In this technological world of ours, we can record these special wow-moments, distribute them to all of us, and repeat them over and over. So that's how I started watching your channel. I'll tell you later why I kept watching. (It's in the REPLY here.)
@benttranberg26904 жыл бұрын
I've always wondered how it is to actually live in other parts of the world. You don't really get to understand that from watching regular TV programs. When I watched your videos, you really let me into your daily life, far more than similar videos I've watched. So I went on to watch all kinds of videos you make, after the initial videos I watched where you surprise people with your language skills. You not only have the perspective of a foreigner coming to another country, but also that of someone putting an enormous effort into being extremely well integrated into not just one, but two cultures very different from your own. Through your background you know how to communicate the experience to the world, while at the same time you remove the language and culture barrier for us in a uniqe way. I feel I'm right there with you. You impress even the natives with your language skills, who in some cases tell us you speak their language even better than themselves. You engage very well with the viewers and with the people you meet, not least because of your positive attitude. Your skill handling the camera during recording is phenomenal, and the technical quality and editing is also superb.

Interesting thoughts. I can speak/read/write 3 human languages fluently (working on my 4th). I can also code in 8 computer languages at an expert level. Aside from my primary human language (English), all of that is self-taught. Then again, I also spent over 20 years as an engineer but I dropped out of high school my junior year and never went back to school. I guess the experience is different for everyone. A guy I used to work with once told me, "You're a jack of all trades, master of none." My response was, "I'm a master of many trades, not just one."

Reading the script, then casually slaps butt. 🤣 Aside from the prank or shocks videos, we get to see a different perspective about Chinese and Japanese people and their culture. Admittedly, I had bad impressions and prejudice towards Chinese. Mainly because that's the impression we were taught since childhood plus all these recent incidents. But that changed thanks to you and other genuine language KZbinrs out there. Now I'm interested in learning Chinese. Coz quite frankly, they're everywhere! I might even meet good friends! And yes Filipino here living in New Zealand! 🇵🇭🇳🇿 Thanks for the advices. Hits home and a slap to my face 😆. It's fun knowing survival phrases here and there. I discovered your channel a few days ago. I then blocked the other channels of polyglots with unlikeable personalities. It can be hard being in a foreign country at so many levels, but hearing about things other people don't like or how they make fun of locals may bring you further down. I gave a speech in Chinese about a year and a half ago. I had it all typed up, and then wrote it in pinyin. It took me 12 minutes reading the characters, reading the pinyin transcription I did reduced that to 8 min. The event organiser saw my notes and said "oh you can just give the speech in English," actually no, because I'd installed my Chinese brain and wouldn't be able to fully switch back even though English is my native language. She thought I couldn't understand what was written there. I worked in a school where the other teachers mostly couldn't speak English, that speech was about 1 year in. They were really relaxed and friendly. There's no way on earth I'd be able to give a speech if I'd continued teaching in a mostly English environment. My progress is much slower than yours, having only reached HSK 5 in 5 years but socialising with mainly Chinese people, and living in a super local area of Beijing really increased my confidence in speaking. I also read with more confidence. I wouldn't suggest totally avoiding the foreign community but have seen people who've lived in China for years and still can't communicate with locals, which is a shame as it's limiting. Now I'm stuck in England but hopefully should be back in China next month. I miss my friends and proper Chinese food, I had a fusion breakfast of 油条and porridge (oatmeal) this morning!

A lot of people can learn through self study. Having a class helps people who struggle with discipline. Having a set schedule helps people a lot. Everyone also learns differently.
@OrientalPearl4 жыл бұрын
That's going to depend on the language in relation to the learner's native language and what they want to use the language for. An American like me can become conversational in Chinese without formal training and a trip to China, but they will not be able to get a job in a Chinese only speaking office or keep up with school in a Chinese university without some training. The reading and writing system is simply too hard. Someone will need to correct your essays and you can learn from the mistakes. Imagine writing an email in Chinese with no formal writing training.... that would not turn out very well. Even after living in China for so many years and getting formal Chinese training, writing essays in Chinese was a whole new world for me and I got a lot of help at Fudan.

You know you're a real 中国通 when you subconsciously start using the hand symbols for numbers! I also moved to China in 2012, and your channel is simultaneously making me really happy (because it's inspiring) and really ashamed (since I've let my Chinese backslide since moving back). I can anecdotally confirm your opinion about self-study vs. formal study. I never took formal Chinese classes, and mostly studied on my own with a tutor or in small groups. I made pretty good progress up until passing HSK 5, and then I hit a wall. The jump from a 2500 word vocabulary to a 5000 word vocabulary at HSK 6 is a huge time commitment and self-study alongside working full-time and starting a family wasn't cutting it. I think if I had 6-12 months to really study full-time it would have been a different story. Hopefully I'll get there someday! I also agree that I think self-studying in-country was a pretty good way to start. Some of my friends who went directly into the university study route ended up getting buried under a demotivating pile of academic work, whereas I had the freedom to wander around and practice whatever seemed most important and relevant to my life at the time. Speaking just for myself, I think the "ideal" would have been self/tutor-study up until HSK 4 and then sliding into formal classes when the vocabulary learning really ramps up. Of course, the other problem with self-study is that I never learned to handwrite properly in Chinese because I could always just get away with texting/WeChat. So I know the stroke order but didn't really memorize many characters at all so I'm still pretty useless when it comes to handwritten communication. Anyway, thought I'd chime in on the topic. One interesting video idea: how did your Chinese foundation help/not help you learn Japanese? Are there any ways that it makes things more confusing sometimes (false friends? same character/different meaning?). I'd love to hear more about that.
@OrientalPearl4 жыл бұрын
I hate taking tests. I took HSK6 one time into 2015 to meet Fudan University's language requirement. I passed it the 1st time and never took another language test. Chinese helped a lot with learned Japanese. It was like buy one get one 25% off. My Japanese teachers complained that my written charters were Chinese style like 板 they would complain that I need to write the top line straight. However, Chinese people write it slightly slanted.
@rca83094 жыл бұрын
@@OrientalPearl Same here. I did HSK 4 and 5, but probably would have been fine skipping 4. "25% off" makes sense since you get a bunch of free kanji but not much in the way of grammar like you do between romance languages. I don't really have a need to learn Japanese but I had a 9 hour layover in Narita a few years ago and spent the whole time playing the "use my Chinese brain to try to make sense of all this stuff around me" game so it kinda piqued my curiosity. Best of luck with your studies and the channel!
