OPEN THE KZbin ENGLISH SUBTITLES. I first came to Japan for short term language study in 2015 after living in China. Since then I have lived a combined total of 2 years in Tokyo. My Japanese and Chinese are fluent but will never be perfect. Making a short video buying food or just doing a self intro will not show the depth of my knowledge or the grammar mistakes that non-native adult learners all make. Here are clips from me speaking Japanese during a 1 hour LIVE radio interview where I talked about living in Japan including my biggest mistake here. The woman interviewing me is Japanese living in America and I am American living in Japan. This should be fun.

OPEN THE KZbin ENGLISH SUBTITLES. Adult language learners, do not be fooled into thinking your goal is to be “perfect”. Unless you are just having a short simple conversation or are writing a short message, the little mistakes will come out and that’s ok. I did an hour long live interview in Japanese and posted it to show you my little mistakes. And that’s ok! I read and speak Chinese and Japanese at a university level. Let’s LEVEL UP here on KZbin from ordering food, to an in-depth cultural conversation challenging enough to hear a few mistakes.

Rabbit with a sun tan Exactly! If I only show you me ordering food, there’s no challenge to that. It’s easy to speak “perfectly” for a few minutes doing a simple conversation. I want to show people what fluent and perfect actually mean. People should be trying to get fluent, not perfect. I argue that no adult language learner will ever be 100% perfect in every aspect. But the most important thing is language proficiency in speaking, reading, listening, and writing.

Listening to you speak these two difficult languages is somehow so beautiful and also very motivating! I am German and can only speak english so far, but I started with japanese one year ago. But it´s a struggle to remember all these Kanjis, sometimes it feels as if my head can´t fit more than 100 of them, haha. It´s really a matter of constant repeating and I of course it´s easier to learn if you live in the country and you are surrounded by the language. Anyways, you sounded very fluent and confident in this interview!

YES, Americans say "sorry" for smaller/quick mistakes. If you bump into somebody on the subway, you say: "Sorry!" But, if you spill your coffee on somebody, on the same subway, you must apologize and then...RUN, as soon as the doors open!!! I remember one time, I went to a movie theater and got a pack of popcorn. As soon as I got back to my seat, by mistake I poured/dropped the whole buttery popcorn on top of the person sitting in front of me!! I DID APOLOGIZE 100X!!! I DID NOT RUN, THOUGH!! Your best skill is your willingness to make mistakes. You are skilled with two languages, but you don't worry that you are not perfect at them. That's what holds many people back, I'm sure. I was in Shanghai once and I was afraid to even say "Ni hao" because the person might assume I knew some Chinese. There should be a stopper word to indicate "don't expect any more than what you just heard."
@OrientalPearl

That's true. I don't want adult learners to get discouraged because they can't be perfect. And I don't like when other KZbin channels say they learned as an adult and proceed to tell people their Chinese or Japanese are perfect. That is simply not true. I heard them speak.

(this is somewhat irrelevant to the video but) Hi! I'm a 20 y/o from Hong Kong have have been living in the US for the past 7 years. I've been binging your channel recently and gotta say, your Mandarin is even better than mine even though I'd been using it everyday from 1st-7th grade! I've been wanting to pick up Japanese, and hearing that you only started learning both Mandarin and Japanese as an adult gives me hope :) do you happen to have a video/ suggestions on where to start (besides learning hiragana/ katakana/ kanji)?

Hello, may I ask whether your Japanese, especially the Japanese culture, is mainly learned in English or in Chinese? Because I saw you said before that you also took a Japanese language courses in Beijing, then I guess it was instructed in Chinese. There are definitely HUGE gaps between Chinese, American, and Japanese cultures. It must be extremely difficult for you to learn Japanese in Chinese (cuz I’m learning German in English as well). If you like, plz share some feelings about this kind of unique experience. 最近日本的疫情也越来越严重,take good care and wish you all the best!

Thank you for your concern. The schools recently closed down in all of Japan because of the virus. Learning Japanese in China was interesting. The teachers used a lot of Chinese and it kind of felt like Chinese class. So, I switched to a Japanese teacher's class who only spoke Japanese to us. That helped a lot.

If you were to listen to the Italian Rafaelo Urbano aka "the metatron" speaking Japanese, how fluent is it? He makes mostly videos about military history in English, but occasionally also makes learn Japanese for Italian speakers. I like how you make constructive critisism of China and Japanese societies in which you are currently living, unlike the south African Serpenza, and his american friend Laowhy86 who ride their mopeds across china and talking smack about the political system, and society, and making all kinds of disparaging remarks about the chinese people in general

I passed HSK6 in 2015. I have never taken any JLPT tests because I had no reason to take it. I think HSK is more accurate because it has an essay writing part at level 6. JLPT includes no writing part.
