No way!!! Is that Aju? One of the kindest Japanese woman I have met during my travels in Japan. I met her last year at Weerasakrack Muay Thai gym in Tokyo, September 2023 during our Muay Thai training session and she acted as a translator for me to a tradesperson working at the gym which then led onto having a really great unforgettable conversation with her before I had to dash to DisneySea. My wife is half Japanese on her mother's side. Her parents were married in Japan and nobody would rent them an apartment so they lived her mother's parents. They were often refused service at restaurants. They eventually moved to the US. This was the early 60's and it must be much better now.

I’m a man and the first thing that came to mind when I heard her say she’s never dated, was she needs to relocate. As beautiful as she is, she’s not benefiting by staying where she’s at. The suggestion for her to be able to travel had nothing to do with her being hit on by men. It was for her to be able to go and experience how much bigger the world is than the one she’s stuck in currently. They are not "rejecting" her, in this video, they just assume that she comes from outside Japan. I'm not saying that racism or doesn't exist in Japan like anywhere else; But, unless it's motivated by hatred, asking where you come from or what your origins are isn't racism, it's curiosity. People do that with me all the time because of my first and last name. Is it annoying? Not for me, as people getting interested in me is better than people ignoring me. I also ask others what their origins are, it's a good conversation starter. The girl may be very nice, but she is full of tatoos and shey's got the look to squat in front of a combini. She isn't doing her best to get Japanese people spontaneously coming to talk to her.

I have lived and worked in Japan off and on most of my adult life. I dont see a lot of problems, but i am not mixed as well. One story does stick in my mind though. I was on a train from Yokosuka to Shinagawa several years back. Two older Japanese ladies sat across from a friend and I most of the trip. I speak Japanese but they didnt know that (I am white, typical looking American). Most of the way they were saying things like we were dirty foreigners and we shouldnt be here and things of that nature. Just rude things from people that think they are the only ones that know what they are talking about around foreign people. As we were getting off I spoke in very polite Japanese to them and Said " In the future you may want to keep your voices down because you never know who may be listening. I hope you have a pleasant day". Both of them turned ghost white, got up and went to the back of the train. My friend asked what I said, and I told him as we got off. It was pretty amazing.

Good for you for still being respectful. It’s hard to be respectful in those moments. I remember I was in England and my dad over heard an English woman talking to her child. The child was complaining about being on a train and the English said “will in America they have boogies and carts” she wasn’t making a joke and looked quite serious. My dad who isn’t even American lol, went up and told that person to not spread lies about other countries like that. It’s strange, it happens everywhere.

@elizabethrose6943 No offence whatsoever. Your experience was typical of Western European attitudes to America (not just Britian). It exists for many reasons. Some of it is jealousy, but also because of perception of American ignorance, and that you lack culture and refinement. It may also help to understand that Western Europe is often shocked and appalled, by issues you have gun control and abortion which we have long moved on from. Trump has made this worse, and Andy Europe has to America is probably less than it has ever been. I have family in New England (half sister is American/british), and know you should not be defined like this. My experience is that you are some the kindest and particularly the most hospitable people I have met in the world. I have experienced this from both sides of your political spectrum. I have been told by many friends, and it is my experience to that Britian is one of those culturally and ethnically accepting nations on earth. It wasn’t even a thing for example, that a recent PM was of Asian origin. What you experienced was a unique attitude towards Americans, which is driven by some jealousy, and superiority complex based on simplified stereotype.

I am mixed 1/2 Japanese as well. From what I remember from spending 1 year in Japan in 1981-82 was that the Japanese associate anyone tattooed with the Yakuza. I met and had friends who were Yakuza in Obihiro so learned a little about the culture surrounding that way of life. I wish you the best in your search for happiness 🙏

Even in 2017, when I stayed at a hotel that had a hotspring in it, it specifically had a rule about no one with tattoos being allowed in. My guess it was for the same reason and I wondered if a foreigner walked in with tattoos if they would say anything.

I would imagine it is probably somewhat easier for those who are Japanese-White mixed and especially Japanese mixed with some other Asian ethnicity. Being Japanese-Black probably makes you stand out the most due to the darker skin. Add the tattoos to that equation, which tend to be less accepted in Japan than it most other countries due to their association with Yakuza and criminal activities, and it seems like a recipe for the loneliness she feels. As much as she loves Japan, she might be happier somewhere like Hawaii, where there is both a fairly large Japanese community (16% of the population), and where she would fit in better with native Hawaiians due to the mix of Japanese and Black looking somewhat Polynesian.

as long as you're Japanese passing you're okay, not necessarily white mixed, some latin american - japanese can pass off their strict standards cuz they think they're tanned and from Okinawa, but indeed black is always seen as below every mix. I can relate a lot to her. I am mixed, korean & African American. Growing up Caucasians kept me at arms length, they were always friendly but none really ever approached on their own. African Americans would keep their distance as well & look at me funny. As I’ve grown up in a mostly Korean-American household, I have had several people come up to me & said that “you don’t act like us” or “you don’t act black”. Which I have never liked that because why would you have to act a certain way just cause of your skin tone, I just act as myself. Finally, when it comes to Koreans, I can’t speak Korean but I have learned how to translate. Koreans did not want to interact with me at all & just saw me as this “black person” and that made me incredibly sad growing up. I could understand them & hear them talking about me, how they were cautious of me & say keep an eye on me whenever I was in a store. It was only if I went with my Korean American mother or Korean grandmother who can speak Korean, they would speak in Korean with the clerks & employees. After introducing me then they would be like “Oh, so she’s your daughter/grand daughter? She’s Korean too?”. A few would remember me afterwards, & be friendly with me whenever I stopped by, others either didn’t remember or didn’t care and treated me the same as before. I still experience all these types of interactions from all races to this day. I only have a few friends but they treat me like me & see me for me, I also have a loving husband now that embraces my culture. I have come to just ignore the negative situations now, & continue to surround myself with people that love & cherish me deeply.

Been to japan for the first time last month. I was traveling solo and got a kind of gaijin blues. People would avoid sitting next to me on trains or in a public bath. I've been studying japanese for a while now and can hold my own in basic conversation or interacting with store clerks, but I've experienced people not realizing I was talking in japanese and replying back in broken english. I can only imagine what that has to be like when you are native and lived there your whole life. Also, Aju seems like a wonderful person. Don't let it get to you, Aju.

Tokyo is also a lot less friendly than other places in Japan. Usually the biggest landing city in a country is where the meanest people are ton foreigners (London, Paris, New York City), or to people in general. It’s usually the most fast paced place with grumpy overworked people who feel they pay way too much for things compared to the rest of their country, and they resent the tourists because they believe the tourists are the reason why everything is “tourist prices,” and for crowding their public events and public resources. There are nice people in Tokyo, but you’re also more likely to run into people who just have a bad attitude, even for a polite society like Japan’s. Generally, people get a friendlier welcome in places like Kyoto, Osaka, Sapporo, and other major Japanese cities outside of Tokyo. You can visit some of the shrines and check out the fox forest and cat island, go on a sleep capsule overnight train. They’re generally friendlier in settings further away from the main hub of Tokyo. So many travelers have talked about this on youtube, definitely worth taking a look at some of what they have to say on this topic.

Also, as for replying in English, try not to take it too personally. I can definitely understand how that would be frustrating for a Japanese person who was born and raised there, and I really hope that Japan starts to recognize their interracial minorities a little more. However, for most tourists, when they reply in English, they’re not doing this to insult you, they actually believe they are doing you a kindness and a favor. Try to keep in mind that probably a majority of the tourists they see every year don’t speak Japanese at all or only speak very little, but by contrast, Japanese people have been speaking their “broken English” for decades as part of their job serving tourists. They believe they’re giving you good customer service and trying to be respectful. Try not too get too sad or take offense at someone doing something with good intentions, they’re just trying to do their job. When Japanese people first moved to western countries as immigrants, hotels and restaurants and even some trains absolutely refused to serve them at all and would leave signs out saying “no [expletive slur for Asian people]” for business. Just a little perspective. It could be a lot worse, and the Japanese people speaking English to you are just trying to meet you halfway and they mean well.

The world has a problem of thinking their perception of the world is the only way the world works. We as humans would be so much better off being more humble and work on expecting the unexpected. We know so little yet think we know the world so when something or someone “different” comes around, it surprises us. When in reality, this is normal existence, we have just been small minded. I would lean more towards Prejudice more then Racism. Like they said... Japan is "98% ethnically the same" so they don't come across us as often(mostly Tourist), so their only view of how we are comes from really bad examples/propaganda from Hip Hop and popular culture in the US. Their two sons were born and raised there, and naturally spoke fluent Japanese. The family returned to Austria, and one evening were watching a puppet show here in Vienna, with an audience of mostly Japanese tourists, including children. My friend's sons were bored and started telling dirty jokes in Japanese. The tourist's children in the audience were amazed and called their parents' attention to the white boys speaking Japanese. I think some of these people have already met Pearl though. More whites go to Japan, and from what I can tell there's not as many blacks that learn Japanese. Where I'm from at least, blacks kind of have had to hide it if they're into Japanese culture or anime. It's seen as nerdy/white by other black people. Its not necessarily that every single person tries to be actively mean, its more ignorance and lack of diversity education in a place lacking diversity--just like how many Japanese people in the country may not have an understanding of disability. Notice how the people in the video were surprised she even spoke the language or had a culturally-relatable background. I'm sure there are plenty of mean people though, as there are in the U.S. The whole stigma around tattoos in certain parts of Japan doesn't help much either.

I see so many comments where people are sad for this girl that she hasn’t been in a relationship. I’m not. She’s unique and seems like a good soul. If the people around her can’t fully appreciate her, thank goodness she hasn’t been in a relationship just to have somebody or for fear of missing out. Maybe her demeanor is still so pleasant because it hasn’t been tarnished by the damage of a bad relationship with someone who can’t truly see your shine or looks down on you. I'm from the England and my wife is Japanese. Our daughter was born and raised in Nagoya but fate would have it she looks completely English, hardly asian looking at all. When I pick her up from school, kids and parents often refer to her as 'Gaikokujin' (foreigner) and I tell them them she was born in the hospital down the road and has lived here all her life. My daughter knows she looks different but doesn't really understand why they say that about her. She gets embarrassed a lot because in reality, after living in Japan for all 6 years of her life, she's way more Japanese than English. But for some reason, if you don't look Japanese, you will always be seen as a foreigner in Japan.

My son-in-law and his two brothers could not inherit anything in Japan from their father because their births in Australia were not registered in Japan. Less of an issue was their mixed race. Each of the three brothers look more or less Japanese. My son-in-law looks Japanese whilst one brother looks Eurasian and another looks like he comes from a Mediterranean country. Luckily, there are over 300 ethnicities in Australia and mixed race children are common so, there are very few issues.

Columbus referred to them as the "low tide" (baja mar) islands because their geography is tricky for ships. If you drop anchor at the wrong place, you'll run out of chain and the anchor will be lost--a massive and expensive problem for ships. You need enough water not to get stuck but not too much. For Columbus and his men, the Bahamanian islands had only three spots they could safely drop anchor. Thus the name of the archipelago.

I am from New Zealand and spent a good portion of my 20s in Japan. I can understand and speak Japanese. I recall many a time being spoken about behind my back or even directly in front of me when people thought I wouldn't understand. I took great pleasure in turning and saying something back in Japanese. The look on their faces. I remember a father explaining to his child that I was like the "one we saw in the zoo"...

My kids who are mixed. Half Japanese half white Italian and they don’t have that much trouble with racism. They told me that there’s a big difference between the way they’re treated and the way their friends who are half black or half other Asian country. For older Japanese skin color seems to be a major factor for them to look down upon or think of them as not being Japanese. I guess also it’s the fact that they’re boys so they’ll talk back very quickly to anyone who steps out a line with them. I’m not saying there are mixed females that don’t do that but it could also play a major factor in the situation. That and my boys are actually pretty tall.

really interesting since things are the other way around for fully Japanese english speakers. I was born and raised in japan but got education in english, so it would be strange for me if I couldn't speak english. But ppl cant seem to believe or accept me being a fluent english speaker just because I'm fully Japanese. Even after explaining my situation they keep asking things like "how can your pronunciation be so good?" "How did you study English?" "are you half american (because I have American accent)?". I mean I don't mind them wondering why but it is uncomfortable when people assume that I shouldn't be able to speak good english because I'm fully japanese.
