I'd only take issue with one thing - the money doesn't really come back to you. That extra money you can save is a great way to have some to stick away in an IRA for when it's time to put down the wrenches. My issue with the brutally expensive tool trucks is that they take a lot of money from young techs who would be far better off in their lives if they can take the chance to save for retirement as early as possible. Even a hundred bucks a month in an IRA is a significant, meaningful amount of money if you do it for thirty or forty years. People tend to rationalize and say "I'll put some away when I'm making more" but older guys like us know there are a lot more demands on your money when you make more ;) (Great video - I have the Icon set and love them. I call them one of my "Lifesaver Tools" because they keep being the answer for hard situations)

I can agree with that to a point. but for the average diy'er that wants a great tool at a great price, they may not see the usage that a pro or full time tech would see. in that event, its trial and error, buy the cheaper and put it to the test and as they fail, upgrade.

@YepStillGood5 ай бұрын
While they are all made in Taiwan by Kabo they are not exactly the same. The two paired sizes on a given wrench can differ from set to set. Also there are differences in the ratcheting mechanisms not sure if that is just Kabo changing the design over time or buyers choosing different specs. The length of the handle gives a huge amount of leverage and you can easily bend the handles, break the pivot or ratchet mechanism. A huge part of the price differences is the warranty. A company like Mountain that has no intention of honoring the warranty can undercut Harbor Freight who sells a much higher volume but has to account for the cost of replacements. Since the ICON first came out HF has been steadily raising the price to account for this. I am more careful w/ them than most of my other tools not just because I value my time and don't want the hassle of replacement. I operate under the assumption that my vendor could stop carrying them at anytime.

I can agree with you there with having a local store to just drive up to and warranty them. With the 25%off deal today I may just drive up and get another set for home!

Wow , thanks for the great info. I'm not a mechanic . I'm just enjoying learning all kinds of new things gs that I never had time for when I was young . Who doesn't enjoy nice shiny things? But I research everything , guitars back then , farm equipment, and tools now . And I'm surprised how many times I'll find things like rhis example . Sometimes like you said I just like something or the company has a great idea and I don't mind spending the money . Ain't it great that we can all make those individual choices. God bless yall

you see them at swap meets as Amazon returns , run $8-10 each , friend has a set and loves them, gotta not put a lot of pressure on them though as it must be why techs are returning them,, were made by Platinum.

Those wrenches are all not the same. I know. Other mechanics in the shop have got those cheaper brands. I bought the Cornball ones 15 years ago and only one of them just failed last year. Yet the other guys, theirs either become hard to operate, the head gets super loose or the finally break. Maybe 4 years max. They are my go to wrenches too. I do not baby them. I think that for a weekender mechanic, go with the cheap ones.

I am seeing this type video more lately. I am not a tool junkie but the next time I want something I will try to look for equivalent alternatives at a lower price point.

I dont do these videos myself often,in fact this is the first one comparing prices rather then tools since its the same tool for the most part. its more so to make people aware and dont immediately pull the trigger on something, take some time, do some research. never know what you will find!

Great review. I really appreciate it. I love these wrenches so I've been trying to find a great price for them. This is awesome. You have gained a sub in me for this one.

Glad to help my man. I didnt realize these were so popular, I love them when I have to use them. Definitely glad I ordered a second set from harbor freight. Got lucky and scored a memorial day 25% off so I thought that was worth it. Thanks for subbing. Hopefully you find use with my channel! I am to educate.

I tried looking up mountain tools and ATD so if I ever had to warranty one of the tools I could contact them. I couldn't find any information for them online. I tried clicking on your Amazon or Walmart links and ATD tools doesn't sell it directly. The tools are being sold through a reseller. I tried reaching out to them and they advised me to warranty the tools to contact the seller directly. I have heard that these tools can potentially break if you put too much torque on them
@MasterTechLou5 ай бұрын
All tools can break with too much torque. This are not meant for torque they are meant for length. Atd does not sell directly you do have to find a seller. Thats the only tricky part.
@majorahole5 ай бұрын
@@MasterTechLou right. But if it does break how do you warranty the tool to ATD?
@MasterTechLou5 ай бұрын
@@majorahole it has to go through the seller. Thats the only downside. So try and find one thats been in the business. Their distribution network is on their website.

I have the icon set. Made so much money on them already.
@CraftwerksMC Жыл бұрын
Lou thanks for this. I was literally looking at the Icon ones the other day and just could not justfiy these. I only wish they had a shallower head overall but they will work in tight spaces better than most any wrench. The only thing I found on par is some old Craftsman Skinny wrenches in SAE but they are old old, like from the 70's and not ratcheting. I never saw the point of them and they were in my dad's tool box, but then one day I got into a situation where I had to take a torque converter off a LS motor I could not spin over due to rust. Those things came in clutch and I could not believe they got the job done. Needless to say they are now in my toolbox, lol. I have been scouring the internet trying to find a metric set and these are the closest I have seen
