Traditional is good for learning body mechanics, but it's not good for learning how to fight. Body mechanics can help you get better at fighting, but the knowledge is not a replacement for the muscle memory of actually hitting and getting hit. When you develop the latter, you stop focusing on the former, because the latter has a more practical application. The former is more esoteric, repetitive, and the application is limited. A martial arts style is just a different type of training wheels, they can help you get going, but if you rely on them you're really just holding your own potential back.

Hahaha, "Wing Chun?" that was funny. The thing is that people confuse the JKD schools to the Jun Fan Gung Fu schools which teach you trapping and that's why they don't learn the pure JKD. Also, because in some cities there are no pure JKD schools. The Ted Wong lineage is good, but many go to the Dan Inosanto one because it's the only option.

Ok...,gotta admit ..., even demonstrated SLOW, it looked fast, slippery, non wasted movement, non-stop continuous attack and defense meshed into one. Shows why Tommy Carruthers drills lately has been like these: Punch , get blocked, move around impediment with continuous attack to what ever is closest target. Should probably start a category/series block of videos with this one and some made in the past titled: " Why Bruce Lee Threw away Wing Chun, Chi Sao & Trapping AND is no longer part of JKD." Also, this notion of boxers "trapping" is nonsense, for one, it's a sport with SAFETY rules, so some stuff cannot be taken seriously for life-defending street combat. Two, most boxers are rolling & slipping with some unplanned, untrained blocking as they simultaneously roll before throwing a counterattack, which makes it look somewhat similar to trapping. When a boxer is in trouble, and he tries to block or hold a hand or arm back, he gets in MORE trouble because the average boxers both shakes loose and/or go AROUND the impediment like some of the moves in this video. This video should be pinned somewhere, clearest, multiple examples of why blocking, trapping is too unrealistic, too inefficient and too slow for even the most unskilled attacker. He's not going to throw ONE attack, stop, don't move feet or hands, and WAIT for you to do your dojo techniques. Gonna have to watch this several more times..., it's that good, folks, Real JKD..., ZERO nonsense and ZERO wasted, powerless motions.

@@ThomasMarxJKD Yep, for sure. If someone were to simply take to heart and seriously imitate/train on JUST the videos on this channel without understanding the nuances of body mechanics , distribution of forces, weight, etc .,.., ....they would be ahead of 75%-90% of martial artists who have trained for years right now...., especially if they intensely train their tools near their maximum, like isometrics, bands, etc.,. Bruce tossed stuff that doesn't work in the real world of fighting, yet , these guys desperately want to hang on stuff that simply doesn't work for reals. Find some serious amateur boxer that has trained for even one or two months, have him put on some kenpo gloves and head gear while you do the same, pay him $5 everytime he can score on you when you attempt to pak sao, lop sao & trap his attack. IT'LL NEVER HAPPEN. Even on a beginner or untrained attacker trying to take yo head off, that shit ain't gonna work. Even when wing chun vs wing chun compete in open contest, they can't pull ANY of that trapping, pak sao off..., it just look like two untrained kickboxers trying to fight each other, don't care if they are black belts or masters IN Wing Chun. Against other styles, they get destroyed from the first second on, like that video of Aikido "master"...,shit don't work in the real world of fighting...., even WITH sport rules...,no sport rules, forget about it. A lot of these so-called "JKD'ers" are doing JunFan mixed with Filipino stuff..., nothing to do with JKD. So if Bruce Lee called all three of his schools and told Taky Kimura, Dan Lee and James Lee to STOP teaching Chi Sao and throw that stuff out, how do you figure you know more than Bruce Lee and the direction he was taking JKD ??? Adding techniques is The Classic Mess...,not JKD.

@@ThomasMarxJKD Tommy put it nicely on his Facebook video...., simplicity DOESN'T SELL to the masses or even the dedicated learner of combat. Most are truly dedicated to the SPORT aspect of martial arts. ONLY at IFO, with exhaustive demonstrations, did I learn & FINALLY realized and know for a FACT that less is "infinitely" more. Way more moves and unlimited options in stripping down than adding and having a SEPARATE technique for every scenario, which doesn't work with any consistency or reality.

You don't see the value of trapping simply because you aren't a grappler The trapping and chi sao of wing chun are very usefull in the clinch/pummeling of muay thai or wrestling Look at the coach erik paulson and the way that he use the concepts of trapping and chi sao for the mma game

That must be it. Clinching in the street.
@SuperMaryu7674 ай бұрын
@jasontodd3042 When it comes to the street, one should not use the mma approach since that is designed around rules and sport. Trapping to a grappler is a bad idea, why copy the opponent when you can use techniques they don’t train. For example when someone is grappling you, their arms are preoccupied and you can strike back especially hitting areas like groin and eyes.

@@SuperMaryu767 for sure, but in this case there Is no more a martial art Is only a self defense prospective Even the sparring Is a sport type of training, but without It we all know how many fake masters we found You have to train everything you can to become an effective martial artist, and after that you specialize to the self defense scenario

@jasontodd3042 Why train everything if it’s going to be reduced to some simple techniques? Waste of time to train stuff then rejecting it compared to training stuff that is simple and direct. Why not reduce in the first place since in a fight, one is not going to process all the things he train. That is why Bruce was way ahead since he knew how the mind worked when under pressure.
