I grew up in a rough neighborhood in Brooklyn. Self defense has been a life long obsession. Don't know much about martial arts, but jkd appears to be the most practical for the chaos of a street fight. Appreciate your videos. Bruce Lee must have had some street experience. The principals outlined will work. Curious about his philosophy now.

When Bruce was young living in Hong Kong during his early teenage years, he was in a gang called Tigers of Junction street. knife crime was very popular during that time. Every gang carried knives including Bruce himself. If there is one thing Bruce knew better than any professional sports fighter, it’s the reality of self defence and how quickly things can go bad. His experience with knives and being around that sort of thing gave him a reality check. Something a lot of combat sport guys lack.

Great video Thomas. It is true people see what they want to see. “Some principles might also apply to wing chun but the application is totally different” You hit the nail on the head with that.

@@walterevans2118 it really is terrible that instead of just being honest about what Bruce was doing and they he can’t really teach it himself because he doesn’t know how to do it, Inosanto has just continued this narrative for the last 50 years. If he just said. I’ll be honest. I can’t do what Bruce did. I can’t even teach it because I can’t do it. What I can show you is early Seattle period stuff and Jun fan gung fu, but JKD went into areas I never had the attributes to do myself. I can’t teach something I can’t do, therefore I can’t even demonstrate it. But instead hes just pushed the whole mixed art thing and made it out that JKD is basically the same as Jun can gung fu essentially.

"If somebody attacks you, your response is not Technique No. I, Stance No. 2, Section 4, Paragraph 5. Instead, you simply move in like sound and echo, without any deliber-ation. It is as though, when I call you, you answer me, or when I throw something at you, you catch it. It's as simple as that, no fuss, no muss." - Bruce Lee (Black Belt magazine, 1967)

Wing Chun itself was created by taking techniques from several existing Chinese styles, it invented nothing new, only compiled elements from other arts into a new one.

Hmm and yet Dan inasanto stated in February 1988 issue of Inside Kung Fu, in this column In the 20th century, article Jun Fan: liberation part 1, " there's pretty much the indication that Bruce's initial modification's was to develop a more long range form of Wing Chun

Well, there was no jkd yet. That was still just modified WC and the modifications were more because of WCs stability issues. We are talking about jkd which came later and, which couldn't be more different from wc, than it is.

I like dan he seems like a really nice guy. Very knowledgeable. But he’s never showed anything that resembles Bruce’s movement or how to apply Bruce’s methods outside of wing chun oriented stuff. I’ve never him show fencing footwork and he’s admitted on camera a lot of what Bruce did he can’t do himself. So if you can’t do it how can you teach it.
@ThomasMarxJeetKuneDoIFO

I really think he wasn't really interested in Bruce's approach at the end of the day. He is more the classical martial arts guy, just teaching bunch of those. He was really lucky being in Game of Death, so people recognised him and he could monetise that.

@@ThomasMarxJeetKuneDoIFO he has definitely benefited from knowing Bruce and I’m sure he has made some money from it. He’s had a lot of students over the years. I think you are right. Dan really like the culture and history around martial arts and will learn something just to learn it because he likes the look of it. Whilst Bruce just wasn’t interested in it if it wasn’t useful for him for practical self defence.

I am no expert, but there is a whip-like body mechanic that I can do with a wing-chun straight punch that I can’t do with any hook; it’s absurdly faster. I can and do use hooks, too. That said, I don’t see wing chun as being nearly so rigid as implied - it’s more like an index of ideal body mechanics. So it makes sense to me that it lends itself extremely well to adaptations, but is not meant for practical use without deviations from the rigid practice forms, which are meant to teach unusual motions and moments of inertia. I think it is meant to be practical, a glossary of movements & mechanics that can give an edge, but should not be set into rigid combinations. More like water - less like a sculpture. It also embraces the philosophy of attacking first, and rejects blocking. The formalism is unavoidable in any style - so I agree that a lot of people out there are teaching it “wrong” - but that’s also part of the art, I suppose. I really liked your take, despite the shade on wing-chun - and despite my disagreement with your premise. Very interesting to think about.

Wing chun people like most traditionalist will hold onto the style to try to make it work. One time I read that to make the chain punching effective is to turn your hip into it and I was thinking how? 🤣
