Just a day visit to the Rio Grande Gorge Orilla Verde Recreation Area south of Taos, New Mexico to check out the camping we had heard so much about. The 6 campgrounds are all part of BLM and a fee is charged. There is NO dispersed camping, only at marked sites, which are few. All camping is first come, first serve so during Peak summer months, sites stay full.
The area is a busy recreation area for fishing and kayaking, as well as hiking with many trails. Wildlife - there are bighorn sheep in the canyon but we did not see any the day we were there. It is a nice area we plan to visit in the off-season, maybe early Spring.
