The fires were preventable. 50 years of leftist environmentalists preventing professionals from doing their jobs. On the other hand, there are a few privately owned and professionally managed forests that survived the fires unscathed because there was nothing to burn. Southern California Edison owns this property near Shaver Lake east of Fresno. The public forest was burned to a crisp, but the SCE owned forest in the center of it was was unscathed.

In a way you gotta see the insurers point of view. Orinda is heavily wooded, with small two lane roads winding through hilly terrain. Being on the east side of hills, it routinely goes into the high 90's from spring through the fall. Often over 100. Were a fire to start there, it would be a challenge for emergency responders. Then, topping it off, the home values out there are stratospheric, meaning the losses insurers would be saddled with would deplete or even empty their reserves. I don't have all the answers for this situation, but it does seem that our zeal to have ever increasing property values has a finite end, beyond which the entire system breaks down.

Please, these homes are multi million dollar homes. These neighbors are wealthy enough to start putting money aside to self insure. Most of these homes are not made of flame retardant materials and will burn 100% to the ground and the insurance companies know it.

Honestly, I might not vote this year, which I am well aware, if I don't vote, then I need to be quite, but, in all honesty, every time I've voted, nothing has come of it. I participate in the community and volunteer my time. I also prefer to vote with what I choose to spend money on. That's the vote they see more than anything.

Well first off, send a thank you note to your local and federal government during to their stupid policies. Secondly, what’s the F…….ing insurance is good for when you can’t claim anything. Either your insurance going to be canceled or higher premiums. If the national policy is to have a homeowner insurance before buying house. Than government should be forcing these insurances going none profits or provide other options.

Yes. I know a client out there has shake shingle roof, surrounded by towering redwoods that have deposited many inches of highly flammable fronds on it. This roof would go up like a roman candle. Been like that for years and years. Any insurer using Google Earth would see this disaster waiting to occur.
