Oris beats Omega and Rolex with the Aquis Pro 4000m?

A couple of months back Oris released their 4000m depth rating diver, the Oris Aquis Pro 4000m. It's big. It's huge actually, but it's super cool and worth diving into (pun intended). With this release Oris proves that the deep diving crown isn't just a game that Rolex and Omega can play at.

Glad you mentioned Sinn. I’ve got 3. They seem to be innovating and providing money for value in a way few Swiss manufacturers do in the tool watch sphere.

Thanks Mike. You would make a great Professor! Your enthusiastic use of inductive reasoning captivates your “students” and draws them in to your conclusions in a very relatable way (concept car). As an American who reveres German engineering I love Sinn, and the UX-where They achieved the depth rating/toughness equation/wearability issue by simply changing the paradigm! Less is more!

As someone who has the regular Aquis as the only watch, I think the coolest version is the "depth guage". The only problem is that it's almost twice as expensive, and goes into the luxury territory too much for it to be considered a tool. It has to compete with Citizen aqualand and promaster, and all the dive computers which give the depth meter feature.

Another great analysis, Mike. You are the watch KZbinr for intelligent collectors. I’m assuming you compared this watch to the Rolex Deepsea Challenge because they are both titanium. However a better comparison would have been to the Rolex Deepsea, either the 2nd gen 126660 or 3rd gen 136660; both gens give you the 3900m depth rating - same as the Oris. Plus the Rolex testing from Comex gives you an additional 25% confidence above the stated rating. But unlike the Oris, both the 2nd and 3rd gen Deepsea are actually wearable, with 43mm dial and thickness under 18mm. And they can both be purchased under retail on the preowned market - rare for a Rolex. Anyway, all these extreme divers are mostly for Party tricks IMO. But if I were to buy one it would be the Rolex 126660 43mm with the deep blue dial.

Sinn UX Hydro all the way. Oil filled wearable diver. Slimmer than Omega SMP. Tested to 5000m. Because of the movement limitation. Case is good to 12000m. I like the analogy with concept cars. Another analogy could be motor sport. It’s where car manufacturers push the boundaries of engineering and design. Later some of it trickles down to civil road cars.

Thanks for another great video, Mike! I usually don't comment on YT videos but I wanted to voice my appreciation for your in-depth analysis. Your own background really adds a lot without the needless pomp which so many other content creators fall prey to. I did have one question, though: could you make a video about your take on micro brands? Whilst I own watches from Tudor and Tissot, releases from small brands like Brew, Autodromo and Beaucroft have become part and parcel of my collection. However, I do get the feeling the microbrand market is incredibly saturated with a lot of 'bad fish' out there. What do you think? Curious to hearing your thoughts!

Might I recommend you look at the Zelos Abyss 3 as an example of a watch to establish a brand's place in the firmament at a MUCH more reasonable price while retaining the massive size and depth rating and a truly epic bracelet. Helson isn't a slouch either, and neither are the countless 1000m divers from Deep Blue.

Honourable mention to the Tudor Pelagos as well. Plenty of depth ability, helium escape valve for the trimix brigade, and still the best adjustable clasp in the dive watch segment. Think I’d wear the Rolex around my ankle. A better fit.
@JohnMcKelvie
@JohnMcKelvie 5 ай бұрын
"trimix brigade"??! I use trimix on a rebreather as a diluent when going deep, but there's no need for a helium valve unless you're coming up from deco in a dive chamber. The purpose of a helium escape valve is simply because, when in saturation diving, helium - a very small molecule - slowly leaks into the watch (when in the bell) under high ambient pressure. When the dive bell surfaces / the pressure is reduced, the helium inside the watch will otherwise blow off the watch crystal unless there's an escape valve for small molecules that otherwise won't allow larger molecules into the watch. So unless we're saturation diving in an underwater dive bell, with inert helium replacing nitrogen (and oxygen at high partial pressures, when it's toxic) - helium escape valves in watches are just for the bullshitters. Even then professional divers are very unlikely to use a conventional and v expensive watch anyway: Shearwater etc. dive computers are far superior. And professional deep sat divers are becoming more rare as uw drones are more capable and economic, and there's less offshore oil & gas activity. Dive watches these days are for mucking around on the surface, before and after diving.
@gori277
@gori277 5 ай бұрын
@@JohnMcKelvieAnd that in a nutshell is the best explanation as to why dive watches is the most stupid category of watches. It’s way past time they should be called snorkelling or just sports watches. I basically wear mine for every day but just for surfing, they still have to be quite resilient as everyday salty immersions (4 mts tops) do take a toll on flimsier watches, but I’d never wear a +$2,000 watch for it, I’ve got my Vostoks and micro brand watches for that.

Snigger……. So I can still wear my £25k Rolex Deep Sea Challenge on my ankle when I pop down to the bottom of the Mariana Trench for a selfie?😁 I’d have thought the end of my comment might have set off an alert. Still, nice to know that some people actually think that Rolex’s et al are actually still used for diving (especially the heavier solid gold Submariners, which incidentally save on the use of expensive and toxic lead for ballast).

Mike, Oris has always interested me because it is privately owned and technically competent. However, many of their designs have not not been my favorites. I think that is because I have been precondition to the Tudor Sub or Rolex Sub, Datejust aesthetic for the past 25 yrs. Shame on me. In my defense I do have Seiko and Tissot divers as well and classic design dress watches. For a vid would you mind going into Sinn as a company and speak on a couple of their hit watches, also speak to their gold bronze model in particular please. Secondly ,in your next Q&A would you touch on whether the Tudor BB Kennisi movements are just an ETA inspiration or not and compare the movements. I still feel at the time of their design and release, ETA movements were specialized and inhouse movements. LastlyI am selling my Seiko SLA 065 diver as I have a the King Turtle. Based on your 65 MAS vid I should not have bought it. Or do I have it wrong and should do the opposite? What's your opinion? Thank you for your time. Did you get a watch for Christmas? Regards, Chris

I have a 8-1/2" wrist circumference. I've owned a Rolex Deepsea Cameron, Ref. 126660, and found it to be too small and difficult to read for its 44mm diameter, yet very top heavy. I sold it. But I still have a vintage Panerai and used to wear 47mm Panerais as my dailies. But size-wise, even those can't hold a candle to my Mudmaster GWG-1000 1A3 and, much more so, my Zlatoust 191ChS with a diameter of 60mm without the crown and 72mm with it. So please forgive me for smiling and shaking my head when anybody talks about a big watch with a diameter just half an inch wider than a Bulova Lunar Pilot. Everything is relative, isn't it?

With its custom design lugs and a rubber strap that screams Oris like a GShock style, a non-tool color choices but rather fancy looking …. Check please Certina Super DS PH 500 in black … you may be surprised. Rolex is a bold statement instead. Full metal gear solid in black it looks like the time itself may be looked as a weapon 😂. Rolex Deep Sea is not a tool watch is more a philosophical approach of the idea of time , human endeavor, bold and sublime in a way like a declaration that we are here to stay. Time encapsulated. Probably the only Rolex I would buy. Oris ? It is the Japanese direction of a Swiss watch company that try heavy to catch more clients

Rolex are a marketing masterpiece, but there is a lot more to relax which goes to make it up and none of it. Apart from the use of the word oyster is original. That’s the whole trick the truth is oris do make fantastic watches

Oris makes mediocre watches. This particular one is a piece of crap for those without taste.

Elsker Oris! Har et limited edition Big Crown Propilot Swiss airborne something, et Prodiver med de foretrukne spidse hour markings og et Aquis calibre 400 43,5mm med blå dial, og jeg elsker dem og mærket! 🤌🏻🤌🏻
