In this Miniature Painting tutorial you'll learn how to paint an interesting skin tone for your Ork character models. This is a very non standard approach to painting Ork skin and lends itself well to making your important characters stand out. Or if you're interested in painting minis for it's own sake you might like to try this out on some of your display models. You also don't have to restrict yourself to painting Orks, whether they be for Warhammer 40k or some other game system. This approach would also lend itself well to Nurgle (with a few small tweeks like adding a few colour nuances with purples etc) or any of the various fantasy creatures you might have lying around in your ever growing and noticeably unpainted mini collection. The painting tutorial uses only 3 simple colours throughout, so you don't have to worry about remembering lots of fancy recipes. If you're goal is to paint to a high standard it's generally a good idea to simplify the colours you're using, that way you can focus on the actual painting without being too worried with what paint bottle you're using, when, and for what.

Dude I start my orca the same way. Frigging love it! This is how painting should be. Take you time, building layers, and seeing the outcome. Never understood the quick way of painting. It’s like the dudes in art class that get done in a hour and wonder why mine kicks ass because I took all week.

I'm about to start on the Ork Kommandos from the Kill Team starter box, and I've never painted Orks before. I've been looking for a good tutorial. I don't really like the bright green a lot of painters use, so I really like the more muted green you demonstrated.

I not only panic when I'm blending about what it's going to go look like and then rush and mess it up, but I'm also panicking that I will mix the wrong colour if I need to do the blending over a number of sessions, especially if I am mixing a few colours together to get a particular colour that i want
@KujoPainting

Yeah that's an issue. That's one of the reasons I make any mixes I use really simple, that way I can get back to where I was without much hassle.

Yeah, I’ve had that same experience myself. Matte paints have a tendency to do that when trying to glaze. Satin is usually what will give the best results for glazes.

Would the same work for caucasian flesh if I swapped out the english uniform for tan flesh or bugmans glow? Or maybe more of a darker yellowy flesh tone, since the red is glazed in at the end?
@KujoPainting

Yep you can just swap in a more neutral flesh tone like you say. Tallarn Flesh, Cadian Flesh tone, Bugmans Glow, whatever. :)
@Mikey__R

Hey Kujo, in general, when you're using glazes to blend between highlights and base tone, do you prefer to glaze with the lighter colour or with the darker? I definitely find it easier to glaze with a darker colour, but that might be because I tend not to even try glazing with light colours.
@KujoPainting
@KujoPainting 2 жыл бұрын
Usually the lighter colour. I tend to go in the direction of the highlight. Sometimes I'll come in with the darker colour afterwards to help smooth it out further. Then at the end you can can use the shadow tone to occasionally go over some of the transitions depends how much effort you want to put into it.

I keep coming back to this video as an explanation of how to integrate layering with glazing. I've been binging Angel Giraldez and Jose Da Vinci videos, their style is quite similar but, for me, I think the Kujo method is a bit more achievable. I do tend to go backwards and forwards in values quite a bit more though. Vince calls this "futzing," and I think it's probably a necessity for the level I paint at, the only down side is I might be a bit less efficient than someone who only goes up in value with each layer.
