Another great video! Orleans is one of our favourite games to play and yet thanks to Dave I now noticed we have been misplaying/missing two rules! We always placed the gears immediately when gaining them (possibly activating a second action) and didn't know you could retrieve workers from the board by not drawing as many from the bag. Glad to have learned these mistakes for future games!

I'm typically a light to mid-weight tabletop gamer; 1.5 to 3.0 average weight/complexity on BGG is my sweet spot. This was one of the most intimidating games for me to learn due to the drab artwork and dry theme and several complex looking boards. Thanks to Dave and crew for explaining it so well and clear. By the end of this video I totally understood the game no problem! I picked up a used copy from my FLGS, which also contained the Trade & Intrigue expansion; for a good price. Now I'm really excited to get this one to the table. Other borring looking and/or complex looking games I have are: Castles of Burgundy (20th anniversary) and Le Harve (complete edition). All of these games seem very daunting before getting over that learning curve. After you get it though, it's not so hard to understand; of course. Thanks, Game Night! p.s. I also have El Grande (big box) which looks borring but isn't very complex overall.

Another fan's thanks for the great videos you guys make. To answer Dave's question, "How do you say, 'I will' in French?" Well, literally the translation is 'Je vais', but that doesn't fit into this context at all. When Lincoln asks, "Will you teach us Orléans, Dave?" The short answer in English uses the auxiliary 'Will' from Lincoln's question. In French the best way to respond to that question would probably be 'Avec plaisir!' Meaning 'With pleasure.'

I find it interesting how Orleans can vastly differ from one game group from another. At the beginning me and my girlfriend used to score always around the 90 and 100 mark. Then we played with a non gamer friend and he scored 150 points in his first game. I enjoyed watching him play so much since he was exploring the different buildings and making combos I haven't even considered before. Orleans is my top 3 game of all time when using the trade board from the "trade and intrigue" expansion. Fabulous game and excellent playthrough.

Great to se a whole game of Orléans. I have played it 7 times now and it is funny to see how you guys didn't go for buildings and went heavy for the farmers. Also you waited quite some time to spam the scholars and the development track. It is the complete opposite to the games, that have I played. :) To Nikki excuse, it must be said, that the 2 early plagues hit her hard killing a knight and a monk. This is a great game and all the options you have each round feel good, which I really like.
@KabukiKid8 жыл бұрын
+Jonezy1977 Yeah, I also blew up the development track all the way to the end in my first game. heh I could have even gone further, if it let me. ;-) The buildings definitely add nice variety and "powers" to the game.
@pepagacy8 жыл бұрын
That is what happened in my first play of the game. Scholars, Development track, and Craftsmen were spammed hard (4-player game, and only one player did not max out the Development track, but he got close). What got me the win was that I built the windmill early, and then used it nearly every turn for the coins and development. But the Bathhouse is still very useful in getting an extra two workers (and being able to put one of the workers that you really do not need back into the bag).

Jason Kossowan I never understand why some people simply cannot play for just the sake of playing! I go to a gaming group occasionally and one of the guys there is obsessive about points scoring so he will even score when playing a totally known game to him against newbie players...wtf??? He even expects newbies to master strategies on a first play! Its so bad I will avoid him in future. IMHO it takes 2 or 3 play throughs of any game to be in a position to play it "seriously"
@KabukiKid8 жыл бұрын
+Jason Kossowan The wooden discs (as Lincoln even mentioned) work better on the boards, since they pop out more and are much easier to see from across the table. Even if you own the original game, it is recommended to look into replacing the "worker" tokens if you can.

There was a lot of talk about the bath house building during the Kickstarter. Any discussion about tweaking the official rules with that building? www.dlp-games.de/content/orleansfaq
@pepagacy8 жыл бұрын
TMG/dlp made an official change to the rules in that the Bathhouse is now draw two and return one token drawn this turn to the bag (I have a deluxe post-Kickstarter version). But, you do need a space to be able to place said worker.
@fitz339 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for posting this video. It's my #1 must-buy game at the moment. I was interested that you guys didn't discuss the Bathhouse much at the end, which Lincoln used to great effect and which has generated so much controversy on the Geek about being OP. From watching this playthrough, I can see how it might be. I believe that the developer has posted some rules variants for that building.
@Blazur9 жыл бұрын
fitz33 Yeah, it's generally considered to be overpowered.
@markpapenfuss11115 жыл бұрын
Since this post, a few rules changes have been made in an effort to nerf the bathhouse. TMG made a rules update that allowed you to use the old way (farmer activates, then in round 4 you draw 3 workers, use 2) or the new way (phase 3 activate without worker, draw 2 keep 1) Then DLP revised the rules to essentially combined the two, to make it activate with a farmer, draw 2, keep 1 in phase 3. The DLP rule is what many people use if they feel the rule is OP.

Throughout this game, they are drawing too many chits. You only are allowed to fill up spaces at the bottom of your board equal to your draw limit. If you leave chits down there, you draw less.
@avron183815 жыл бұрын
That is not how the English rules are written. Page 14 Phase 3
@ChubbyPenguin344 жыл бұрын
Thats not correct. You draw up to your draw limit every turn. The only caveat being that you can never have more than the spaces shown on the market (8 total). So if your draw limit is 5, but you only have 3 spaces left, then you would only draw 3 new chits.

@clumsyjester4599 жыл бұрын
I didn't really like Dave's rule explanation on this game. It was pretty cumbersome for a very basic deck/bag building worker placement game. Yes, a turn has many phases, but most of them are automated upkeep and the only two phases with player decisions are placing your workers and resolving actions, which is pretty much the minimum bare bones standard for any worker placement game. The game itself looks pretty solid, but seems to be a rather generic worker placement game. Despite this, I still liked it better then Broom Service. The Kennerspiel award should have gone to either this or Elysium, but in contrast to Istanbul last year, I wasn't particularly fond of any of the nominations this year.
@KabukiKid8 жыл бұрын
+Clumsy Jester I actually thought Dave's explanation was quite solid. I thought it was so effective that I almost want to play that part of the video to new players, so I don't have to explain it to them. lol Also, I think this is the true Kennerspiel winner. It is in my heart, at least. ;-)
@clumsyjester4598 жыл бұрын
+KabukiKid Just watched it again. The explanation itself was actually quite okay, but I always prefer to have a clear separation of upkeep and actual player actions up front.
@KabukiKid8 жыл бұрын
Clumsy Jester I can understand that. :-)

Can't you just leave your guys on the action spaces and therefore not have to send them back to the bag and therefore avoiding plague?
@ChubbyPenguin344 жыл бұрын
That is correct. Sometimes you may want to avoid taking a completed action to stop those characters fro going back into the bag. The rules are clear that you may or may not take any actions you please

I know I’m way behind the curve on this game, but I don’t understand the purpose of the census. The person in first (Dave usually) gets a coin and the person in back (Nicki) has to pay. This seemed to continue to get Dave further in the lead and continue to put Nikki behind. Seems like an awful, reverse catch-up mechanism. Am I not understanding the census??

I believe players take one action then the next player does one action and so until everyone has passed. You took all your actions all at once per player. Edit : From the rules. Beginning with the Start Player and in clockwise order, each player may carry out 1 action or pass. If you pass, you cannot carry out any more actions during that round
@heccubus19 жыл бұрын

prufrock1977 Not true! I just recently purchased those games to fill out some "collections". Foolishly I don't open a game until we play it (might have missing parts). The reason they haven't been played is that we have already played with another person's copy, so the urge to get it played is a bit lessened.

Seeing people cheat in board games rubs me the wrong way. . . Come on Lincoln! If you accidentally draw four with the bathhouse, board game etiquette says you return all four and redraw three. Choosing the best two of four is quite different than choosing the best two of three. Someone should have called you out on that.
