12:16 I think the dude says "adam tai bandaka" which I guess means "I’m your servant/subject/slave" in Old Persian. That’s honestly truly remarkable, they didn’t use the already existing New Persian voices they had in the game files and decided to go the extra mile and have new lines in this ancient language. Kudos to them and best wishes to you Ornlu.

There are a few Greek myth easter eggs here that I spotted: The oracle says "a great city will burn" as prophecy to Artaphernes. This is a reference to the story about the king of Lydia, Croesus, who asked the Oracle for a prophecy ahead of his upcoming war with the Achaemenids. The oracle is said to have replied that "if you attack the Persians, a great empire will be destroyed". As it turned out, it was Croesus' own empire, and so Artaphernes is now the satrap of Croesus' old kingdom. The Greeks bearing gifts in the title is about the Trojan horse of Age of Mythology; that wasn't quite around here, the ruins of Troy are a bit further north, in the neighboring satrapy of Phrygia And finally about the name of Aristagoras - the first part is indeed connected to "aristocrat", but the -goras is more mysterious; might relate to agora, or public square. The -crat part is also a Greek word, from "-kratia", meaning rule or empire, so "aristocrat" kinda means the same in Greek.
@TheJediKnight91Ай бұрын
The first word is the adjective άριστος (aristos) which means excellent or superb and the second is the verb αγορεύω (agorevo), meaning to speak publicly in front of an audience. So essentially Aristagoras means "excellent speaker" 😉
@nvmttАй бұрын
As soon as I heard the words of the oracle, I knew how this was gonna go. It was a famous prophesy. The city that burned was that of his own, not the island he was supposed to conquer lmao. I never actually knew which event that oracle referred to, but after all these years I finally found it. Thanks Ornlu :)

Aristocrat comes from aristos, meaning noble/elite, and kratos, meaning power/rulership.
@snorrijornsen4566Ай бұрын
Exactly. And -agoras is an element in names which refers to the "assembly" or "marketplace" (agora), so Aristagoras literally means "the best in the marketplace". Both names with Aristos (e.g. Aristobulos) and with -agoras (like philosophers Pythagoras and Anaxagoras) are quite common in Greek antiquity

Darius is probably the oldest monarch to usurp the throne and then write fanfiction about how he totally did not actually usurp the throne.

The first two scenarios didn't appeal to me very much. I may not be able to describe it well, but they seemed very one-dimensional. It took some time for me to think about it, maybe I overlooked a hint, but I could imagine they wanted to use both scenarios to have the player play around a bit with the new units, before diving into proper scenarios, but still. This scenario I found somewhat stressful as you couldn't know what to prepare for and had little to no time to adapt. The haste left less room to get used to the new units. Some dialogs and voice acting might be decent, but overall I had too much the impression of some modern guy try to be funny and tell a story in modern language, which simply is so far of from the original time. Like with jokes or cockiness that feels rather unrealistically to have happend anywhere close to that. I would have to think more about an alternative approach to introduce the units and how to diversify to scenario, but I have the indistinctly feeling it could be done quite a bit better. Or its only my expectation and taste thats so different.
