November 4th 2023 and my oro negro tree just gave me 2 avocados for the first time. They started ripening on the tree but they’re not ready yet. I can’t wait to eat them! 👏🏻 👏🏻

Oro Negro is supposedly an offspring of Monroe, that possibly crossed out with a Mexican variety. I've heard the flavor is superb, but it's not as productive as other varieties. But still a great choice for Florida yard growers. Thanks for the taste tests. I have a young tree and top worked another with O.N.; no fruit yet.

Oro is slightly similar to Brogdan but a lot better.

Late season Monroe's, Choquette's and Simmons - all very similar commercial varieties are much better than early season ones. Also older trees produce better tasting fruit with longer seasons. Try blending Monroe's into cottage cheese and other things. Makes things creamier without changing the flavor. Try them grilled & baked.

I always envy those from So. Fla. who make videos of all the tropical fruits they're growing, but on every video, there is always the sound of heavy traffic. I live in North central Florida and am limited as to what I can grow, but I do have the quiet. I think that might be better. Thanks for the video.

We used to live in north central Florida. Grateful to live here now and be so close to everything, including the beach, and be able to grow so many fruits. We are just 3 miles from the bay, but there are many areas east of us that are not near a major road.

@@SulcataGrove I'm not sure where you are but I still envy being able to do all you do,but I have an aversion to crowds. The other thing is the cost of property in the south, beyond my means. Thanks for the input. I have an oro negro but am doubtful of my having success this winter. I have a huge canopy of live oaks and it does give me a microclimate. have a carambola that never has suffered harm.

How much does Monroe improve from beginning of season to end? Doesn't oil content increase, resulting in more flavor? I know that's definitely the case with Choquette. Do you know if Monroe is considered better than Choquette? I've read that Monroe radically outproduces ON. Do avocado trees respond well to top-working and grafting on an additional variety? I've thought of adding ON to a Monroe tree I just started growing. What are your thoughts, Celeste?

my monroe are good right around Halloween but they really hit their stride in November. So I'd say yes, they improve as their season progresses. And yes, you can top work to either change the variety or add another variety. but if you add a second variety you have to make sure one or the other doesn't become dominant and overtake the other one. I don't know if Monroe out produces Oro Negro but Monroe has an excellent yield.
