Thank you for teaching me this. I have a five year old loquat I put in the ground that had only grown about 8 inches. I'm thinking I'll uproot it and spread the roots. Suspect it was root bound, whereas I didn't know any better when I pulled out of pot and buried it.

Just make sure it gets watered for a week or two 2-3 times per week or keep a close eye on it to see if it gets sad from messing with the roots. I had no issue with this tree as well as most others but occasionally you get one that is not happy with you messing up the roots.

@CorJenFarm as a kid, I would hual truck load of oranges to the plant there in Lakeland for orange juice. I remember the smell to this day, so fragrant. Used to live in Leesburg. After the Army, I settled here in Pensacola because the wife is from the Philippines. At 64, I think I'm too old to resettle back south, where I love it so much, especially the fresh water fishing. Your tree planting technique makes sense. Your soil looks good, compared to the fine sand where I live in coastal SoFlo. So your Day avocados have good flavor, and they ripen evenly? The only Days I've ever eaten had no flavor.

We like the Day and have no ripening issues with ours. We are not huge avocado eaters so our ability to judge what a good avocado tastes like isn't worth noting. We had to bring in soil to raise the land up due to high water table and flooding. The soil came from a swamp in most cases or was heavily mixed with compost and covered in wood chips 8 years ago so the organic matter is usually 5-7% and I have amended the soil and brought all the nutrients up to a good level. Just have to monitor potassium on a yearly basis.
