Our Discover Your Clarington journey now takes us to the Orono Crown Lands trust in Clarington, Ontario located just west and south of the community of Orono. This spectacular 633-acre tract of land is under the direction of the Ministry of Natural Resources but managed by a not-for-profit organization of volunteers within the trust.
These lands were originally purchased by the MNR in 1922 to be run as a tree nursery growing and shipping millions of seedlings per year as well as performing vital tree research including cloning, fertilization and pest control. These lands were abandoned in 1996 and the current tracts of land north and south of concession 5 were retained for community use. There are over 13 kilometers of well-marked, hard packed trails for hiking, biking, skiing, snowshoeing and fishing. Dogs are allowed on the trails but must remain on leash at all times. These lands are vital to the Wilmot Creek sub-watershed as they protect fish, trees, birds and many species of animals. You will see an abandoned nursery bed, plenty of natural forest sections of both the Wilmot and Orono creeks, an abandoned canal, a road system and a very extensive network of trails. You will also find the abandoned Canadian Northern Railway
In spring and fall you will witness significant spawning of both rainbow trout and salmon. Parking is located in a number of locations off Taunton Road, Ochonski Road and along Concession 5. There is a covered gathering area located on the grounds including a number of picnic tables. The trust encourages users to join as active members or to simply support the lands with donations.
