So what happened is, Ororon first met the Captain where the latter asks him about Citlali. Lying out of caution at first the Captain while notices doesn't pursue further which leads Ororon to following him. The Captain was all like, you are hiding something but ok have a nice day. He continues following the Captain and his Fatui operatives he has with him fully aware of his presence but the Captain doesn't bat an eye. This lead to Ororon's shock when the Captain uses a very strong Night Winds technique that is normally very difficult to master which spurs his curiosity further. Eventually he follows them all the way to the stadium where that fight happens and Ororon coming to the conclusion he needed the Captain alive saves him. Afterwards we got that conversation between them where he helps the Captain in place of Citlali and further proves his worth by suggesting to reconstruct the ley lines in Natlan instead of creating a shield to protect the ley lines from further corrosion. You can say to that end the Captain has been gathering Secret Mechanisms to make reconstructing and restoring the ley lines possible. Ororon indeed is helping the Captain of his own will but it wasn't the Captain making him a deal he can't refuse and he was warning Ororon to back out when he still has a chance. Ororon saved the Captain and he uses the life debt card on him and is now helping the Captain out of personal motivations and self interest on a shared goal.

To give you an idea, I've seen people saying that Arlerquino beat Raiden and focalors... Raiden literally fought for 500 years, Alerquino wouldn't even defend himself if she went with full power. Focalors WE DIDN'T see anything, but it took 500 years of energy accumulation to deal a fatal blow to her (in fact, she didn't even try to defend herself)
