I basically started from scratch again last year. Really realizing i wasn't being my full self. And now realizing I'm missing the old alternative clothes from the early 2000s, 90s and even 80s. So I'm building that up now

My approach to buying second-hand is the exact opposite: I buy my statement pieces second-hand and my basics new. A gorgeous goth gown from PunkRave is more likely to be well kept (and was better quality to begin with) than a H&M sweatshirt. That being said I try my best to buy 90% of my clothes second-hand anyway :) Can't wait for you clothing distressing tutorial!

I'm not goth, more "alternative I guess" but I personally would invest in some basic black clothing and use paint, bleach and scissors to diy/distress clothing also jewelry to customize those pieces. Chain, safety pins, charms etc can be bought from craft or hardware stores and good cheap shoes/boots/can be bought from thifting/marketplace. I made chokers in the 90s out of a bit of ribbon/velvet ribbon/lace and a safety pin or velcro to secure around the back of neck 🙂

@@TheCornflake1 🤣 na too many rules, I like the freedom to do/listen to/wear what I want 😈 I may think about it when "goth" passes its mainstream phase and isn't just a fashionable ig/yt click bait buzz word and leftover goths are the true, glorious, passionate goths I know and love! 🖤 🤔

Bit of boot advice from experience(from a male as well so more geared towards males) Metalhead myself, not a Goth(though i do love the music and aesthetic) but one thing i know is boots if you really want Martens look for an older pair, or make sure the pair you're getting are made in England, newer chinese made docs aren't any better than demonia garbage, granted they cost alot but i speak from experience Gripfast(now owned by Solovair) make better britboots that last damn near forever(my oldest pair say 1982 on the tag!) for pull-ons Chippewa is my brand of choice, i own 2 pairs of their engineers boots, one i have been wearing for 7 years and another for 5 and they show no signs of slowing down, Carolina also make good ones picking out decent and good quality Western styled boots can be as easy as ensuring whether or not the country they were made in has cowboys (USA, Mexico, Canada, El Salvador, Australia) for military boots surplus stores are always a good check if you don't mind buying used, older style combat boots(less like modern/tactical) with stitched soles last longer and can be repaired and/or customized by a cobbler, Belleville, Corcoran, and Altama are great the proper socks as well can make or break the comfort of a boot, wear boot socks with boots take care of your boots! polish em atleast once a month, they take care of you after all

I stopped buying DrMartens in 2003 when they shifted production from England to Asia (Thailand and China). The alternative is Solovair still made in the original DM factory and far higher quality. They also resole boots. Also I would advocate finding a good tailor for alterations and one off items. Often you will be surprised how really inexpensive (compared to sweat shop crap) it is and you will have an item that will last and be unique.

I love customising my clothes to turn 'normal' clothes goth and this was what a lot of goths did back in the 80s.. it gives the clothes more uniqueness to do that not to mention how fun it and it's a good conversation piece if someone complements your clothes you can talk about it.. I have so many ideas I need to try for my summer outfit 🖤

You see, I'm loving this baby bat essentials playlist in spotify, and I'm kind off in an "all black wardrove" craze. This video helped me a lot to make interesting outfits and have fun building outfits!

If my entire wardrobe was gone I would literally cry - that's not funny to even joke about. Other than suits for work & my other Victorian style outfits. I just like wearing band T-shirts so I could get something rather quick. Good video to help people out with

My only problem really in having a goth wardrobe are the shoes, I mostly like to wear sneakers cause they’re comfy and easy to get, and I don’t want to spend so much money on special shoes

I actually did this nad my number one tip for myself was to buy a few clothes and a ton of accessories because they are cheaper and they can trnsform an outfit into more depending on how you style them, or if you change up the accessories for the same outfit it can make almost a new one. And a big YES to Doc Martens!! Probably the best decision of my life when I bought them. They are really good quality and last a long time and you can style them a lot of ways. However I'm still longing affter the Demonia Emily 375 and at some point I might buy them because I really like the look of it.

I only wear thrifted zara dresses with navy lipstick and combat boots and it looks super goth for cheap. I had to build my wardrobe entirely from scratch a few months ago.

Great video, I’m a guy so our staples are different but the points you make are the same. I swear my Demonias were made on the only day they were fine. I’m a mechanic, I’ve been using the same pair full time in the worst conditions for 5+ years and they’re still fine. But I’ve had so many friends wear theirs 3 times then everything went to hell in a hand basket. I need to try a pair of new rocks next. I finally landed my dream pair of docs so those + one pair of new rocks should be good to go. Hell I remember being a broke teenager and buying black Vietnam jungle boots from the army/navy store for 20 bucks.

Honestly I have loads of pairs of Demonias and I even still have my first ever pair that I got 15 years ago. I've owned about 10 pairs of Demonias and the ONLY ones that have broken (2 pairs in total) were ones where the heel is separate from the platform. All the pairs of Demonias I have with solid platforms have lasted perfectly fine.

I always buy my Doc Martens used, especially as I love that they're usually broken in already and so they're usually much more comfy than a new pair when first wearing them. Plus, they always last FOREVER. I bought some almost-new oxford-style Docs about a decade ago on eBay for about $40 US that I still wear all the time. The inside sole is getting a bit worn out admittedly, but the outside is still in pretty great shape (I do maintain it with shoe polish and cleaning, though).

I gave up most of my wardrobe when I moved abroad for four years almost 14 years ago. Shoes, belts, clothes, everything. When I came back to Germany I started from scratch. I often got lucky and friends gifted me basic dresses and shirts but mostly I enjoy thrifting. I wore second hand doc's for years but they actually hurt me so last year I invested in new ones. I'm glad I did. Vinted and thrift stores are great there are even plenty of band shirts on Vinted. And it's always like a treasure hunt!

Thanks for making this. At one point I had somewhat of an identity crisis hoping people would find me more approachable and gave all of my alternative clothes away which still breaks my heart.

I’m kind of on the verge of this and trying to talk myself out of it… I haven’t bought clothes in 4 years, so I’m tired of everything I have, and I want to keep dressing alternative but it’s been hard. Between family, job searches, making new friends and wearing the exact same outfits for so long, it’s easy to convince myself to just “dress normal.” What would you say to yourself now, if you had the chance?

Have you bought anything from New Rock recently? I always heard they were THE shoes to get because they were amazing quality, but recently I've seen a couple of people say they got New Rocks that were shockingly bad, so idk if they changed something in maybe the past year or so. It's a big investment so I'd want to be 101% sure before buying any!

Can't like this enough for the great advice. So tired of all the Shein hauls on KZbin. Thrift stores are my go-to as well, but investing in quality basics new often makes sense. I did buy a pair of Demonias with Christmas money. They say they are real leather, so we'll see how they hold up.

Yeah my ex is a major douchebag that threw away and/or destroyed all of my clothes. We're talking expensive stripper boots and clothes, corset and skirt sets from when hot topic actually had good clothes, jncos I stole from boyfriend's and concert shirts for days. Irreplaceable items. I hope there is a hell so he can burn in it but I doubt I'm that lucky🤣😭Have been wearing hand me downs for years. Just got a sewing machine. Time to go old school goth and make/alter my own. Wish me luck. I'm gonna need it😂

I did drop $800 on clothes from Killstar, Vampire Freaks and Dolls Kill. They were almost all on sale. I also bought knee high leather boots from Pleaser as they are tried and true. I think this is my third or fourth pair because that's how many times my clothes have been stolen.😢At least I know I have good taste?🤷‍♀️I have been considering some items from Temu and Shein but have done extensive (weeks😅) research and review reading. Alot of the good looking stuff is made by Romwe. There are quite a few KZbinrs that speak highly of their products. In my experience with Temu they are hit or miss which is why Im taking the extra time to be sure the items I'm considering are worth the money. Ultimately my goal is to make my own but that's another story🥴

Holy sh*t that's terrible =( why would they even do that, I don't get it... I hope you are getting a few nice pieces for yourself, if I were to start from 0 I would 100% look into second hand options and sales to get started again. Personally i'm not a fan of romwe, aliexpress, shein etc.

Oh yea, I understand the being tall or bigger and having a difficult time finding clothes that feel good. I'm 6 ft tall and usually wear an XL, and sometimes have to size up because some brands size things smaller. Ugh 😣 ..also, thanks for the heads up about Shien. I was kinda thinking about ordering from them, but not anymore. ..Idk, I'm just getting tired of my current wardrobe, I wear a lot of black horror themed or rock shirts, which I love but want to add something else to my wardrobe. Thanks for this video, it helped. 🦇🖤🕸️

In the place i live, there is no alternative stores so i got my look from H&M , new yorker,Zara and sometime Cropp. And thrift stores. Ordering from the web is always a gamble... I need to try things on before i buy. It comes out minimalist, but i am too old and lazy to rock a extreme look)

Whatever you buy, try to mend it and keep it for as long as possible. It doesn't take much to learn basic sewing, and it will save you big throughout your life. I wish I believed that brand name clothing was made ethically, but I don't think it is a lot of the time. Buying vintage and keeping stuff longer are ethical for sure.
