It is always good to find deals on clothes or make your own. I think a lot of people forget DIYing was the only way to get the style you wanted back in the day.

When I started out, I did not have access to any goth store (I lived in the middle of nowhere, we did not even have regular clothing stores or you had to drive 15-30min) so I used to re-use things I had and cut them up etc, I also had some black fabric and I attempted to make things (not always successfully XD)

@@Orphea333 that's why I like growing up in the 90s in the scene so many people back then was just DIYing to achieve certain looks

Making your own is so satisfying. I'm glad that I learned to sew. DIY is what goth was really all about back in the day. Same with punk. Most of my clothes are DIY, and that's really the way to make outfits that are truly yours. Thrifting is also good, and clothes from thrift shops can be deconstructed and reassembled to make OOAK (one of a kind) pieces that you will be proud to wear. Sometimes in thrift shops you can find clothes that are already made to your liking. (Jan Griffiths).
@Jhihmoac3 жыл бұрын
Back in most of the 80s (and into the 90s before the world wide web) a good Goth outfit was a DIY undertaking (excuse the pun) with pieces here and there you picked up in different stores, resale, and thrift shops... Even the likes of Hot Topic, back in the mid/late 80s were limited in number and sold mostly dark inspired jewelry and accessories...

Being a plus size girl, I tend to have a hard time finding cute clothes. Either they're awesome but too small for me, or they are kinda ugly but fit... Lately I got a cute couple of trad goth pieces on Vinted. Damn... All this makes me wish i'd wear them more but those days with the pandemic, I only go to work and I have to tone down when I'm at work. Plus I've never had the opportunity so far to go to goth events / festivals. I hope i'll be able to change that once all this mess gets better.

Second hand is the best. The quality is better in many cases. Clothes aren't made as good as they used to be. Same with furniture. I've gotten many pieces of furniture from thrift shops that were made of good solid wood, which could be refinished to look new. I like doing that, and it feels great to have a nice piece that you're proud to own. (Jan Griffiths).

99% of my clothes are thrifted and the test are things I have occasionally purchased from higher brands like killstar, etc. Many of the thrifted things I have had for years. I think thrifting is fun because you can find some really nice things even though you might not have thought so. I occasionally diy clothes and jewelry. I do enjoy getting new nice things occasionally though. 💜🦇

I love to thrift (when the charity shops were open/ vintage fairs were running) so that makes up a substantial amount of my wardrobe but I also buy from high street/mainstream shops (including online currently) such as primark, H&M, Asos, Topman Next, River Island ect.. and style the pieces into however I like to wear them. Goth doesn't have to be expensive if you don't want it to be and/or have the know how to get decently priced/cheap clothing to not brake the bank if you are living with a budget. Also try and diy things if you can/want to for instance I DIY a lot of my jewellery especially Necklaces, bracelets and earrings.

I'm in two alternative buy/sell groups on Facebook and I've gotten some really great things from there! One of my best purchases was two blouses, I believe they were by Pentagramme and Punk Rave (?), for like a quarter of the full price! Another reason second hand is good is because you can get things you otherwise wouldn't support, for example I don't want to buy from Dolls Kill but someone sold a second hand skirt from them and voila, I got a gorgeous skirt without giving any money to them ;) EDIT: Such groups are also very good for those of us who live in places where there are no good thrift shops. The ones around where I live are small and mostly have hideous old person clothes. Much easier to find specifically alt items in groups!

I'm an avid sale/thrift shopper! I tend to like looking at the sales at "normal" stores because I've always found that all the cool shit goes on sale anyway! Some of my favorite peices I've gotten on sale racks. Some of my favorite places to shop lately (mostly for work appropate stuff, but not always) is Unique Ventiage and Modcloth. I also reccomend Die With Your Boots On. They are a small store in Salem Mass. that has a lot of handmade/small run items. I love their stuff!

I also notice there are lots more small business clothing brands i see online with cute clothes towards the darker realm, and they are affordable.I learned my lesson with Shein :( the clothes i ordered from there were just not the quality I was looking for, no offense to those that purchase through Shein it's just my preference.

I have bought from similar 'cheap' online stores in the past and it will come as no surprise that I don't own a single item from them anymore... It's fast fashion made to look good in pictures, not to be worn (or at least thats my opinion on them)

I've been lucky with Shein so far. I don't usually buy fast fashion, but I will if I can't find something locally. There's been a couple of things I had to restitch, but it was easy, and I made the item stronger. (Jan Griffiths).

Just from personal experience here-I highly recommended shopping at sustainable brands or brands that produce clothes in high quality materials or independent brands. I stopped shopping fast fashion and thrifting in December 2020 because due to how cheap things were both was making me have a closet full of bad clothes. I started only buying from high quality brands and designer brands something I never thought I could do. Boy, boy does it make a huge difference in how you shop and look! It’s literally like magic! And you will be surprised at how many of these designer or sustainable or high quality brands have super gothic pieces. It also helps you save money because you have to actually invest and think about what you buy due to the price. But you practice slow fashion and get a quality item that’s made to last a lifetime in return. When it comes to stuff like studded belts, gothic necklaces etc definitely shop from handmade independent brands. The money is beyond worth it.
@Orphea3333 жыл бұрын
I do have a few more expensive pieces of clothing, however I still found them either on clearance or in a thrift store. You definitely notice the difference in quality from 'normal' brands. I'm currently looking into getting a good tailored vest (like a costume jacket but for woman) any recommendations?

I live in New Zealand and it is very difficult to get alternative style clothes. There is such a small goth scene here that there is barely ever second hand options, and we don’t have a lot of the stores that other countries have, so I have to buy everything online and order from other countries, which makes postage so expensive.

I buy mostly from charity shops and second hand on eBay. Basics I get from new look in the uk, they have a sustainable brand called be kind which is very good. I buy special pieces from exoumbra on Etsy and I have a beautiful coat from Goddess Handmade also on Etsy. I buy jewellery from independent sellers on IG and Etsy. I also love punk rave but it’s very expensive so I make sure it’s something very unique and special and that I can incorporate it into an outfit. I love killstar but I am buying less from them and have bought a few of their things second hand. I’m trying my best to be conscious of where I get my clothes as you said we only have one planet we have to take care of her.
