Seems like a lot of commenters missed the “fashion” part of the title and went straight for “Emo is not Goth.” This isn’t a discussion about music, but about fashion related to our subcultures. @KaiDecadence8 жыл бұрын
Again, you're very misinformed. Emo did not come from Goth at all. It came from Punk (more specifically, California Hardcore Punk). Goth came from Post Punk and both are different styles of Punk. Literally, the only thing that Goth & Emo share are that their from the punk movement, that's all. The first emo band was a band called Rites of Spring (1984) and they helped kickstart emo and the genre received popularity in the 90s but died down in the mainstream towards the end of that era. Then we got pop punk gaining popularity in the late 90s to the early 2000s and Emo found it's way back to the mainstream shortly after. Goth for the most part was always underground. The most attention it ever had was in the 80s before it receded back into the underground in the 90s. Anyway, short little lesson aside, the point is that Emo and Goth were never the same thing, ever. The only reason people (usually younger) believe that is because the mainstream stupidly pushed that out with things like "Emo is the new Goth" and other similar idioms which was not true (but who can blame the mainstream, they try to use hot buzzwords to sell things to people when it comes to alternative subcultures).

And we didn't like pastel goth being included in the other video either. "Pastel goth" is just a tumbler trend with no connection to Goth music. Not happy with cyber either, as that comes from Rave fashion and a video game and not goth. We don't like it when people spread incorrect information and give people false ideas about Goth (and other subcultures/music scenes). It can have a harmful effect on those scenes in the long run.

I'm actually impressed, this is overall quite well made and the outfits are generally nice, plus the guy is rather pleasant to look at, haha! I did physically cringe at the emo one though, emo is its own thing (even if it's technically a cousin of goth since they both have their roots in punk) and if I'm not terribly misinformed the clothing style that accompanies the genre is called fashion core. That aside, I am rather happy with this video, and I honestly think it's better than the women's one.
@KreeZafi8 жыл бұрын
I don't know how accurate the timeline is though, I have little to no knowledge about when different subgenres emerged (aside from trad, which is obviously the earliest one, hence the name) so I can't comment on whether or not the years are correct. I think these outfits are a lot better and more "realistic" than the women's though, those looked more costumey, plus they included too many things that weren't really... relevant. Like pin-up. I'm more pleased with this.

Goth is more than fashion. It's music first and foremost and you dress to identify with that. I like a lot of post punk/ goth rock but I also really like industrial and ebm. So I might do up my hair like siouxsie one day and have cyberlox in my hair the next. We aren't just rejecting a fashion style when we complain about emo we are complaining about a style of music and a tribe if you will that we don't wish to identify with. Think of goth clothing as tribal markings as opposed to just a fashion statement and then you'll be on the right lines. Saying that goth and emo are the same is just offensive.The gothic subculture is way more complex than you care to imagine haha

I was a club kid in the 80s, and all these styles were there. Goth started from a hippy movement (Stevie Nicks and 13th Floor Elevators/Roky Erickson). By the 70s we have Siouxsie Sioux, Robert Smith, Klaus Nomi and Fad Gadget.

Psychedelia was such a major influence in a lot of the bands that sprouted in the early 80s (you can definitely hear it in early SOM albums like Alice; the instrumental song Phantom definitely gave me a Gonzo-era Hunter S Thompson meets Spaghetti Western vibe). Eldritch himself took on the essence of the former Lizard King, Jim Morrison in the way he performed

I watched more than a dozen reaction videos of this one and there are 3 things I’d like to share about that: -Sure Punk broke the mold but Punk is still Punk today (with its own branching tree and all) but I don’t know if Punk shares the respect that Goth has towards it… some may have the same reaction to this that Goths has with the Emo style. (Goth is not punk! Followed with a stream of angry emojis) -Emo! It’s not Goth, as a strong majority agrees with, but the influence is undeniable. It’s literally like Goth got to see Punk again and Say: Hey Punk! Remember when we hooked up 20 something years ago? Turns out we had a child. Of course, both Punk and Goth would not recognize it as their child and it would feel rejected and pretty misunderstood… Emo. -So many reactions about the Trad Goth’s bandanna and boots when, for me, my first reaction was: Oh! Look! It’s Al Jourgensen. Common accessories among the Trad Goths? Maybe not. But, I mean, it’s Al, right? Anyways. I enjoyed it very much. Have a good day.
@z0d6037 жыл бұрын
I still think Emo has its place here, on a fashion standpoint. I would even be so bold to suggest that it's probably the most versatile style in the lot. Let's say you dress as an Emo and crash any other styles's party. On every occasion you'd be off, yes, but not as off as other pairings might. Like a Cyber Goth at a Vamp's party or an Edwardian at a Punk concert. That being said, maybe I know nothing, maybe I'm utterly wrong, but I will keep wearing what I like and listening to whatever pleases my eardrums. It's just fashion.
@z0d6037 жыл бұрын
Maybe "40 years of Men's Alternative Fashion" would indeed be a better title, but so much less fun! (I mean, I never watched Reaction Videos except for this one. Around 20! So fun!) Emo has nothing to do with Goth? Maybe. I will sure never argue over the fact that, music-wise, it's, as you say taking it back to the beginning. Punk and Rock, sure! And is hasn't the same feel. Not. One. Bit. Agreed. As for the themes goes... well I'm sure a cowboy can feel estranged too. All I'm saying is: There's a taint. An obvious one. Visually. Well! History will tell. But my guess is that, 40 years from now, even in fashion, many people will still associate the two. And it will still piss people off =)

Emo was NOT a goth subculture. I'm not sure you even understand what a subculture is. Goth IS a subculture. It doesn't have subcultures of it's own. It is a subculture built around supporting a genre of music, also called Goth. It has subgenres like Goth rock, deathrock, darkwave, coldwave, etc., Emo was another genre of music which was a subgenre of punk & not of goth. What is most commonly called "emo" today is scene fashion, which isn't goth either.

Less confusing than what they went with imho, I mean, why don't they just throw in metal because they wear black too, if this is just about style and nothing to do with music, metal is way more goth than emo or punk, just a weird title for the contents

Jaden Oldfield You have a point there. :)
@edwardsdistress55996 жыл бұрын
Okay then? If "alternative men's fashion" is too vague for people to wrap their minds around then they should find a different title for it. But I can't justify giving the video a title with "goth" in it because most of these styles aren't goth, or don't even exist (I can't find ANYTHING on 'Edwardian goth'. Period clothes aren't goth anyay, they're just period clothes) and it's giving people misconceptions and even more stereotypes about the subculture when that's what us goths (the creator of this video is supposedly one) are supposed to be stopping. Now people think emo is goth and she's just made things worse.

To be fair, emo did come out of goth. Emo is like a more... juvenile take on goth, I suppose. Most emos are younger people who wear black variations of clothes that are popular now, and listen to music with heavy emotions. I think emo is for the teens that are into the darker stuff but still like some of the modern, more wearable clothes. Also, emos are a lot more hormonal and sad. Emo's music is like a punk-rock with depressing lyrics and a minor key, whereas goth music has more of a unique tone and is a genre of its own.
@libbylulu1486 жыл бұрын
Elementary School Dropout as an 80s Goth I can say that emo is similar to the way we were in terms of mood and seriousness. We were jaded, guarded, skeptical, typical Gen X angst. Most goths I see today are chipper and animated. But emo matched more of our serious side, the way I remember it back in the day.

I wouldn't really consider myself emo, because I only listen to one band that is stereotyped to be emo. I usually listen to Slipknot and other stuff now though.. But I do have the haircut.

Goth is a derivation of post-punk and glam rock. Emo is a derivation of hardcore punk. They startec withen ten years of each other and share a sort of Byronic romanticism, but are stylistically very different.

Emo isn’t suppose to have a fashion, it’s just a genre. Goth on the other hand is both.

Emo isn't really what people think it is. In origin it had nothing to do with wearing all black and being dark in an emotional sense. Emo came out of hardcore punk with bands like embrace and rites of spring. The music can also sound rather happy like but with emotional lyrics like Northfolk or camping in Alaska. If you take a look at these bands and the people who'd listen to them, they don't sound or look anything like Goths.

Because you must like betas. Don’t be surprised basic people usually are attracted to each other.

@Wydozv ExYeest all dance styles originate from ballet and traditional folk dancers. That doesn't mean hip hop and krumping should be categorized the same.

@Wydozv ExYeest The only similarity between goth and emo in fashion is that they use black, I really don't see much more similarities other than that

Thanks! Some most clothing was borrowed or rented and had to go back but some was model’s own.
