Zeus, King of the gods in ancient Greek mythology, was famous for his many love affairs. He especially liked to change into different men, animals, or even inanimate objects to seduce goddesses, nymphs, women, and one young boy. This is parodied in the opera, where Zeus metamorphoses into a fly in order to seduce poor, poor Euridice.
