love hearing from the old guys who worked the gear

Fascinating what they did with such limited tech compared to today. 8 track cart memory storage, analogue oscilloscope screens, and tubes/valves, yet 1 degree of accuracy of tolerance in the signal. Awesome old techy stuff. I could imagine that guy as one of the old star trek tech crew. Brilliant.

Between 1964 and 1969 I used to operate one of those tracking consoles at the Winkfield UK STADAN (Minitrack) station.

Especially staying so nice when he got the feeling that Apollo was muuuch more interesting for the interviewer than his work :-P But seriously, thank you for unearthing these two adorable specimens, @EEVblog !

As a long-time aficionado of the Apollo program, I'm eating up the content about the Australian contributions, hitherto not much on my radar.

I've found this poem. I wonder which tracking station it's about. The last Post Pass Calibration Silent, deserted, no longer alive, With the bustle of former days: Standing listless in the sun The intruders have gone their ways. Nearby, the stands for antennae rise In testimony of the time, When metal fingers probed the sky At the satellites in their climb. Kangaroos gaze with soft brown eye At the station that used to be And the salt lake stretches dazzling white Like a shimmering timeless sea. Within the building silent stands The equipment deadly mute: Tape recorders spin no more, The silence is acute. No more to hear the SCAMA call Nor the 'birds'unearthly note 'That's station 18, finished now' You'll hear the knowing quote But across the country to the east There grows a like creation Within it holds the traditions of Old number 18 station.
